1Hear this, O ye priests, and hearken, O house of Israel, and give ear, O house of the king; for unto you pertaineth the judgment; for ye have been a snare at Mizpah, and a net spread upon Tabor.
1Listen to this, you priests! Pay attention, people of Israel! Listen, royal family! Judgment is coming against you because you have been a trap at Mizpah and a net spread out on Mount Tabor.
2And the revolters are gone deep in making slaughter; but I am a rebuker of them all.
2The rebels are deep in the slaughter of sacrifices, but I will punish every one of them.
3I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hid from me; for now, O Ephraim, thou hast played the harlot, Israel is defiled.
3I know all about Ephraim, and Israel cannot hide from me. Ephraim, you have acted like a prostitute, and Israel is stained with sin.
4Their doings will not suffer them to turn unto their God; for the spirit of whoredom is within them, and they know not Jehovah.
4Their own actions won't let them return to their God. A spirit of unfaithfulness is in their hearts, and they do not know the LORD.
5And the pride of Israel doth testify to his face: therefore Israel and Ephraim shall stumble in their iniquity; Judah also shall stumble with them.
5Israel’s pride testifies against them. Both Israel and Ephraim will stumble because of their sins, and Judah will stumble right along with them.
6They shall go with their flocks and with their herds to seek Jehovah; but they shall not find him: he hath withdrawn himself from them.
6They will go with their sheep and cattle to look for the LORD, but they won't find him. He has pulled away from them.
7They have dealt treacherously against Jehovah; for they have borne strange children: now shall the new moon devour them with their fields.
7They have been unfaithful to the LORD and have fathered children who don't belong to him. Now their New Moon festivals will destroy them and their fields.
8Blow ye the cornet in Gibeah, and the trumpet in Ramah: sound an alarm at Beth-aven; behind thee, O Benjamin.
8Blow the ram’s horn in Gibeah and the trumpet in Ramah! Sound the alarm at Beth-aven! Watch your back, Benjamin!
9Ephraim shall become a desolation in the day of rebuke: among the tribes of Israel have I made known that which shall surely be.
9Ephraim will be completely ruined on the day of punishment. Among the tribes of Israel, I am announcing what will certainly happen.
10The princes of Judah are like them that remove the landmark: I will pour out my wrath upon them like water.
10The leaders of Judah are like people who steal land by moving property markers. I will pour out my anger on them like a flood.
11Ephraim is oppressed, he is crushed in judgment; because he was content to walk after man’s command.
11Ephraim is oppressed and crushed by judgment because they were determined to follow worthless human commands.
12Therefore am I unto Ephraim as a moth, and to the house of Judah as rottenness.
12So I will be like a moth to Ephraim and like rot to the people of Judah.
13When Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah saw his wound, then went Ephraim to Assyria, and sent to king Jareb: but he is not able to heal you, neither will he cure you of your wound.
13When Ephraim saw how sick they were and Judah saw their own wounds, Ephraim turned to Assyria and sent for help to the great King Jareb. But he cannot heal you or cure your wounds.
14For I will be unto Ephraim as a lion, and as a young lion to the house of Judah: I, even I, will tear and go away; I will carry off, and there shall be none to deliver.
14I will be like a lion to Ephraim and like a strong young lion to the house of Judah. I will tear them to pieces and leave. I will carry them off, and no one will be able to rescue them.
