What Hebrews 9:4 means

Inside the most sacred space were the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant, richly overlaid with gold. Within the ark were tangible reminders of God’s dealings with Israel: a golden pot of manna recalling His provision, Aaron’s rod that budded attesting to His chosen priesthood, and the tablets of the covenant representing His law. These objects testified to God’s faithfulness, authority, and revealed will. Yet their placement within the most restricted area emphasized that the heart of God’s covenantal presence was shielded. The closer one came to these signs, the more carefully one had to approach. The sacred contents magnified both the glory of God and the necessity of a worthy mediator to draw near on behalf of the people.

Context

Verse 4 continues the inner-room description begun in verse 3, detailing its most significant furnishings and their covenantal associations. The next verse (verse 5) highlights the cherubim and the mercy-seat above the ark, then the writer will deliberately refrain from extended treatment of the furniture, shifting instead to what was done there and how often (verses 6–7). This movement from sacred objects to sacred actions helps the reader see that the chapter’s focus is not antiquarian detail but theological function—preparing for the claim that these arrangements taught by symbol the need for a greater, final atonement.

v.3And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holy of holies;

v.4This passage

v.5and above it cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy-seat; of which things we cannot now speak severally.
