Genesis 50

1And Joseph fell upon his father’s face, and wept upon him, and kissed him.

1Joseph threw himself on his father's face, cried over him, and kissed him.

2And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel.

2Then Joseph ordered his servants, the doctors, to embalm his father, and the doctors embalmed Israel.

3And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of embalming: and the Egyptians wept for him threescore and ten days.

3The process took forty days, which was the standard time for embalming; and the Egyptians mourned for him for seventy days.

4And when the days of weeping for him were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found favor in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,

4When the time of mourning ended, Joseph spoke to Pharaoh's court and said, "If you are pleased with me, please tell Pharaoh this message:

5My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again.

5'My father made me promise him, saying, "I am about to die. You must bury me in the tomb I dug for myself in the land of Canaan." Now, please let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.'"

6And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear.

6Pharaoh answered, "Go up and bury your father, just as he made you promise."

7And Joseph went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,

7So Joseph went to bury his father. All of Pharaoh’s officials went with him—the elders of his court and all the elders of Egypt.

8and all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father’s house: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen.

8In addition, all of Joseph’s family, his brothers, and his father’s family went. They left only their children and their flocks and herds in the land of Goshen.

9And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen: and it was a very great company.

9A very large group also went with him, including chariots and horsemen.

10And they came to the threshing-floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and there they lamented with a very great and sore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father seven days.

10When they reached the threshing floor of Atad near the Jordan River, they held a very loud and bitter ceremony of mourning; Joseph observed a seven-day period of mourning for his father.

11And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians: wherefore the name of it was called Abel-mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.

11When the Canaanites who lived there saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, "The Egyptians are holding a very solemn ceremony." That is why that place, which is near the Jordan, was named Abel-mizraim.

12And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them:

12So Jacob’s sons did exactly what he had commanded them to do.

13for his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field, for a possession of a burying-place, of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre.

13They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre, which Abraham had bought from Ephron the Hittite as a burial place.

14And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.

14After burying his father, Joseph returned to Egypt along with his brothers and everyone else who had gone with him.

15And when Joseph’s brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, It may be that Joseph will hate us, and will fully requite us all the evil which we did unto him.

15When Joseph’s brothers realized their father was dead, they said, "What if Joseph still holds a grudge against us and pays us back for all the original wrongs we did to him?"

16And they sent a message unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying,

16So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, "Your father gave these instructions before he died:

17So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the transgression of thy brethren, and their sin, for that they did unto thee evil. And now, we pray thee, forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him.

17'Tell Joseph this: I beg you to forgive your brothers for the great wrong and the sin they committed in treating you so badly.' Now, please forgive the crime of the servants of your father’s God." Joseph wept when he received their message.

18And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we are thy servants.

18Then his brothers came and threw themselves down before him. "We are your slaves," they said.

19And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God?

19But Joseph said to them, "Don't be afraid. Am I in the place of God?"

20And as for you, ye meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.

20"You planned to harm me, but God intended it for good. He brought me to this position to save many lives, as is happening today.

21Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them.

21So don't be afraid. I will provide for you and your children." He reassured them and spoke kindly to them.

22And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father’s house: and Joseph lived a hundred and ten years.

22Joseph stayed in Egypt, along with his father’s family. He lived to be one hundred and ten years old.

23And Joseph saw Ephraim’s children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were born upon Joseph’s knees.

23Joseph lived to see the third generation of Ephraim’s children. The children of Machir, son of Manasseh, were also placed on Joseph’s knees at birth.

24And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die; but God will surely visit you, and bring you up out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

24Then Joseph said to his brothers, "I am about to die. But God will certainly come to help you and lead you out of this land to the land he promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob."

25And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence.

25Joseph made the sons of Israel take an oath, saying, "When God comes to help you, you must carry my bones up from this place."

26So Joseph died, being a hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
