1Then Joseph went in and told Pharaoh, and said, My father and my brethren, and their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have, are come out of the land of Canaan; and, behold, they are in the land of Goshen.

1Then Joseph went to Pharaoh and told him, 'My father and my brothers have arrived from the land of Canaan with their flocks, their herds, and everything they own; they are now in the region of Goshen.'

2And from among his brethren he took five men, and presented them unto Pharaoh.

2He chose five of his brothers and introduced them to Pharaoh.

3And Pharaoh said unto his brethren, What is your occupation? And they said unto Pharaoh, Thy servants are shepherds, both we, and our fathers.

3Pharaoh asked the brothers, 'What is your occupation?' They answered, 'Your servants are shepherds, just as our ancestors were.'

4And they said unto Pharaoh, To sojourn in the land are we come; for there is no pasture for thy servants’ flocks; for the famine is sore in the land of Canaan: now therefore, we pray thee, let thy servants dwell in the land of Goshen.

4They also said to Pharaoh, 'We have come to live in this land for a while because the famine is so severe in Canaan that there is no pasture for our flocks. Please, allow your servants to settle in the region of Goshen.'

5And Pharaoh spake unto Joseph, saying, Thy father and thy brethren are come unto thee:

5Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'Your father and your brothers have come to join you.

6the land of Egypt is before thee; in the best of the land make thy father and thy brethren to dwell; in the land of Goshen let them dwell: and if thou knowest any able men among them, then make them rulers over my cattle.

6The land of Egypt is open to you. Settle your father and brothers in the best part of the land; let them live in the region of Goshen. If you know any of them who are especially skilled, put them in charge of my own livestock.'

7And Joseph brought in Jacob his father, and set him before Pharaoh: and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.

7Then Joseph brought his father Jacob in and presented him to Pharaoh, and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.

8And Pharaoh said unto Jacob, How many are the days of the years of thy life?

8Pharaoh asked Jacob, 'How old are you?'

9And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty years: few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.

9Jacob replied to Pharaoh, 'The years of my travels have been one hundred and thirty. My life has been short and difficult, and I have not lived as long as my ancestors did during their travels.'

10And Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from the presence of Pharaoh.

10Then Jacob blessed Pharaoh again and left his presence.

11And Joseph placed his father and his brethren, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.

11Joseph settled his father and his brothers in Egypt and gave them property in the best part of the land, the region of Rameses, just as Pharaoh had ordered.

12And Joseph nourished his father, and his brethren, and all his father’s household, with bread, according to their families.

12Joseph also provided food for his father, his brothers, and his father's entire household, giving each family what they needed.

13And there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very sore, so that the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan fainted by reason of the famine.

13Now there was no food in the entire region because the famine was so severe. The people of Egypt and Canaan were exhausted because of the hunger.

14And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, for the grain which they bought: and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house.

14Joseph collected all the money in Egypt and Canaan in exchange for the grain the people bought, and he brought the money to Pharaoh’s palace.

15And when the money was all spent in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came unto Joseph, and said, Give us bread: for why should we die in thy presence? for our money faileth.

15When the money in Egypt and Canaan was all gone, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, 'Give us food! Why should we die in front of you? Our money is gone.'

16And Joseph said, Give your cattle; and I will give you for your cattle, if money fail.

16Joseph answered, 'If your money is gone, bring your livestock, and I will give you food in exchange for them.'

17And they brought their cattle unto Joseph; and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for the horses, and for the flocks, and for the herds, and for the asses: and he fed them with bread in exchange for all their cattle for that year.

17So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses, sheep, goats, cattle, and donkeys. He got them through that year by trading food for all their livestock.

18And when that year was ended, they came unto him the second year, and said unto him, We will not hide from my lord, how that our money is all spent; and the herds of cattle are my lord’s; there is nought left in the sight of my lord, but our bodies, and our lands:

18When that year ended, they came to him the next year and said, 'We cannot hide the truth from you, my lord. Our money is gone and our livestock belongs to you. We have nothing left to offer except our bodies and our land.

19wherefore should we die before thine eyes, both we and our land? buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants unto Pharaoh: and give us seed, that we may live, and not die, and that the land be not desolate.

19Why should we die before your eyes and our land be ruined? Buy us and our land in exchange for food. We and our land will be Pharaoh's servants. Give us seed so that we can live and not die, and so the land won't become a wasteland.'

20So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for the Egyptians sold every man his field, because the famine was sore upon them: and the land became Pharaoh’s.

20So Joseph bought all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh. Every Egyptian sold his field because the famine was so hard on them, and the land became Pharaoh’s property.

21And as for the people, he removed them to the cities from one end of the border of Egypt even to the other end thereof.

21As for the people, Joseph moved them into the cities from one end of Egypt’s border to the other.

22Only the land of the priests bought he not: for the priests had a portion from Pharaoh, and did eat their portion which Pharaoh gave them; wherefore they sold not their land.

22However, he did not buy the land belonging to the priests. The priests received a regular food allowance from Pharaoh, so they did not need to sell their land.

23Then Joseph said unto the people, Behold, I have bought you this day and your land for Pharaoh: lo, here is seed for you, and ye shall sow the land.

23Joseph said to the people, 'Look, today I have bought you and your land for Pharaoh. Here is seed for you so you can plant the ground.

24And it shall come to pass at the ingatherings, that ye shall give a fifth unto Pharaoh, and four parts shall be your own, for seed of the field, and for your food, and for them of your households, and for food for your little ones.

24When the harvest comes, you must give one-fifth of it to Pharaoh. You can keep the other four-fifths for seed for your fields and for food for yourselves, your households, and your children.'

25And they said, Thou hast saved our lives: let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.

25They said, 'You have saved our lives! If it pleases you, my lord, we will be Pharaoh’s servants.'

26And Joseph made it a statute concerning the land of Egypt unto this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth; only the land of the priests alone became not Pharaoh’s.

26So Joseph made a law concerning the land of Egypt that is still in place today: one-fifth of the harvest belongs to Pharaoh. Only the land belonging to the priests did not become Pharaoh’s.

27And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen; and they gat them possessions therein, and were fruitful, and multiplied exceedingly.

27The Israelites settled in Egypt in the region of Goshen. They acquired property there and had many children, and their population grew quickly.

28And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years: so the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were a hundred forty and seven years.

28Jacob lived in Egypt for seventeen years, so he lived to be a total of one hundred and forty-seven years old.

29And the time drew near that Israel must die: and he called his son Joseph, and said unto him, If now I have found favor in thy sight, put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me: bury me not, I pray thee, in Egypt;

29When the time for Israel to die drew near, he called for his son Joseph and said to him, 'If you love me, put your hand under my thigh and promise to show me kindness and loyalty. Please do not bury me in Egypt.

30but when I sleep with my fathers, thou shalt carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their burying-place. And he said, I will do as thou hast said.

30When I die and rest with my ancestors, carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burial plot.' Joseph answered, 'I will do exactly as you have said.'

31And he said, Swear unto me: and he sware unto him. And Israel bowed himself upon the bed’s head.

31'Swear it to me,' Jacob said. So Joseph swore to him, and Israel bowed in prayer at the head of his bed.'
