Genesis 35

1And God said to Jacob, Go up now to Beth-el and make your living-place there: and put up an altar there to the God who came to you when you were in flight from your brother Esau.

1In the mean time God said to Jacob: Arise and go up to Bethel, and dwell there, and make there an altar to God, who appeared to thee when thou didst flee from Esau, thy brother.

1And God saith unto Jacob, `Rise, go up to Bethel, and dwell there, and make there an altar to God, who appeared unto thee in thy fleeing from the face of Esau thy brother.'

2Then Jacob said to all his people, Put away the strange gods which are among you, and make yourselves clean, and put on a change of clothing:

2And Jacob having called together all his household, said: Cast away the strange gods that are among you, and be cleansed, and change your garments.

2And Jacob saith unto his household, and unto all who <FI>are<Fi> with him, `Turn aside the gods of the stranger which <FI>are<Fi> in your midst, and cleanse yourselves, and change your garments;

3And let us go up to Beth-el: and there I will make an altar to God, who gave me an answer in the day of my trouble, and was with me wherever I went.

3Arise, and let us go up to Bethel, that we may make there an altar to God; who heard me in the day of my affliction, and accompained me in my journey.

3and we rise, and go up to Bethel, and I make there an altar to God, who is answering me in the day of my distress, and is with me in the way that I have gone.'

4Then they gave to Jacob all the strange gods which they had, and the rings which were in their ears; and Jacob put them away under the holy tree at Shechem.

4So they gave him all the strange gods they had, and the earrings which were in their ears: and he buried them under the turpentine tree, that is behind the city of Sichem.

4And they give unto Jacob all the gods of the stranger that <FI>are<Fi> in their hand, and the rings that <FI>are<Fi> in their ears, and Jacob hideth them under the oak which <FI>is<Fi> by Shechem;

5So they went on their journey: and the fear of God was on the towns round about, so that they made no attack on the sons of Jacob.

5And when they were departed, the terror of God fell upon all the cities round about, and they durst not pursue after them as they went away.

5and they journey, and the terror of God is on the cities which <FI>are<Fi> round about them, and they have not pursued after the sons of Jacob.

6And Jacob came to Luz in the land of Canaan (which is the same as Beth-el), he and all his people.

6And Jacob came to Luza, which is in the land of Chanaan, surnamed Bethel: he and all the people that were with him.

6And Jacob cometh in to Luz which <FI>is<Fi> in the land of Canaan (it <FI>is<Fi> Bethel), he and all the people who <FI>are<Fi> with him,

7And there he made an altar, naming the place El-beth-el: because it was there he had the vision of God when he was in flight from his brother.

7And he built there an altar, and called the name of that place, The house of God: for there God appeared to him when he fled from his brother.

7and he buildeth there an altar, and proclaimeth at the place the God of Bethel: for there had God been revealed unto him, in his fleeing from the face of his brother.

8And Deborah, the servant who had taken care of Rebekah from her birth, came to her end, and was put to rest near Beth-el, under the holy tree: and they gave it the name of Allon-bacuth.

8At the same time Debora, the nurse of Rebecca, died, and was buried at the foot of Bethel, under an oak, and the name of that place was called, The oak of weeping.

8And Deborah, Rebekah's nurse, dieth, and she is buried at the lower part of Bethel, under the oak, and he calleth its name `Oak of weeping.'

9Now when Jacob was on his way from Paddan-aram, God came to him again and, blessing him, said,

9And God appeared again to Jacob, after he returned from Mesopotamia of Syria, and he blessed him,

9And God appeareth unto Jacob again, in his coming from Padan-Aram, and blesseth him;

10Jacob is your name, but it will be so no longer; from now your name will be Israel; so he was named Israel.

10Saying: Thou shalt not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name. And he called him Israel.

10and God saith to him, `Thy name <FI>is<Fi> Jacob: thy name is no more called Jacob, but Israel is thy name;' and He calleth his name Israel.

11And God said to him, I am God, the Ruler of all: be fertile, and have increase; a nation, truly a group of nations, will come from you, and kings will be your offspring;

11And said to him: I am God almighty, increase thou and be multiplied. Nations and peoples of nations shall be from thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins.

11And God saith to him, `I <FI>am<Fi> God Almighty; be fruitful and multiply, a nation and an assembly of nations is from thee, and kings from thy loins go out;

12And the land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give to you; and to your seed after you I will give the land.

12And the land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give to thee, and to thy seed after thee.

12and the land which I have given to Abraham and to Isaac--to thee I give it, yea to thy seed after thee I give the land.'

13Then God went up from him in the place where he had been talking with him.

13And he departed from him.

13And God goeth up from him, in the place where He hath spoken with him.

14And Jacob put up a pillar in the place where he had been talking with God, and put a drink offering on it, and oil.

14But he set up a monument of stone, in the place where God had spoken to him: pouring drink-offerings upon it, and pouring oil thereon:

14And Jacob setteth up a standing pillar in the place where He hath spoken with him, a standing pillar of stone, and he poureth on it an oblation, and he poureth on it oil;

15And he gave to the place where God had been talking with him, the name of Beth-el.

15And calling the name of that place Bethel.

15and Jacob calleth the name of the place where God spake with him Bethel.

16So they went on from Beth-el; and while they were still some distance from Ephrath, the pains of birth came on Rachel and she had a hard time.

16And going forth from thence, he came in the spring time to the land which leadeth to Ephrata: wherein when Rachel was in travail,

16And they journey from Bethel, and there is yet a kibrath of land before entering Ephratha, and Rachel beareth, and is sharply pained in her bearing;

17And when her pain was very great, the woman who was helping her said, Have no fear; for now you will have another son.

17By reason of her hard labour, she began to be in danger, and the midwife said to her: Fear not, for thou shalt have this son also.

17and it cometh to pass, in her being sharply pained in her bearing, that the midwife saith to her, `Fear not, for this also <FI>is<Fi> a son for thee.'

18And in the hour when her life went from her (for death came to her), she gave the child the name Ben-oni: but his father gave him the name of Benjamin.

18And when her soul was departing for pain, and death was now at hand, she called the name of her son Benoni, that is, the son of my pain: but his father called him Benjamin, that is, the son of the right hand.

18And it cometh to pass in the going out of her soul (for she died), that she calleth his name Ben-Oni; and his father called him Benjamin;

19So Rachel came to her end and was put to rest on the road to Ephrath (which is Beth-lehem).

19So Rachel died, and was buried in the highway that leadeth to Ephrata, this is Bethlehem.

19and Rachel dieth, and is buried in the way to Ephratha, which <FI>is<Fi> Bethlehem,

20And Jacob put up a pillar on her resting-place; which is named, The Pillar of the resting-place of Rachel, to this day.

20And Jacob erected a pillar over her sepulchre: this is the pillar of Rachel's monument, to this day.

20and Jacob setteth up a standing pillar over her grave; which <FI>is<Fi> the standing pillar of Rachel's grave unto this day.

21And Israel went journeying on and put up his tents on the other side of the tower of the flock.

21Departing thence, he pitched his tent beyond the Flock tower.

21And Israel journeyeth, and stretcheth out his tent beyond the tower of Edar;

22Now while they were living in that country, Reuben had connection with Bilhah, his father's servant-woman: and Israel had news of it.

22And when he dwelt in that country, Ruben went, and slept with Bala the concubine of his father: which he was not ignorant of. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve.

22and it cometh to pass in Israel's dwelling in that land, that Reuben goeth, and lieth with Bilhah his father's concubine; and Israel heareth.

23Now Jacob had twelve sons: the sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacob's first son, and Simeon and Levi and Judah and Issachar and Zebulun;

23The sons of Lia: Ruben the first born, and Simeon, and Levi, and Juda, and Issachar, and Zabulon.

23And the sons of Jacob are twelve. Sons of Leah: Jacob's first-born Reuben, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Zebulun.

24The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin;

24The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.

25The sons of Bilhah, Rachel's servant: Dan and Naphtali;

25The sons of Bala, Rachel's handmaid: Dan and Nephthali.

25And sons of Bilhah, Rachel's maid-servant: Dan and Naphtali.

26The sons of Zilpah, Leah's servant: Gad and Asher; these are the sons whom Jacob had in Paddan-aram.

26The sons of Zelpha, Lia's handmaid: Gad and Aser: these are the sons of Jacob, that were born to him in Mesopotamia of Syria.

26And sons of Zilpah, Leah's maid-servant: Gad and Asher. These <FI>are<Fi> sons of Jacob, who have been born to him in Padan-Aram.

27And Jacob came to his father Isaac at Mamre, at Kiriath-arba, that is, Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac had been living.

27And he came to Isaac his father in Mambre, the city of Arbee, this is Hebron: wherein Abraham and Isaac sojourned.

27And Jacob cometh unto Isaac his father, at Mamre, the city of Arba (which <FI>is<Fi> Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac have sojourned.

28And Isaac was a hundred and eighty years old.

28And the days of Isaac were a hundred and eighty years.

29Then Isaac came to his end and was put to rest with his father's people, an old man after a long life: and Jacob and Esau, his sons, put him in his last resting-place.

29And being spent with age he died, and was gathered to his people, being old and full of days: and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

29and Isaac expireth, and dieth, and is gathered unto his people, aged and satisfied with days; and bury him do Esau and Jacob his sons.
