1And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, Jehovah appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
1When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, 'I am God Almighty; live your life in my presence and be blameless.'
2And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.
2'I will make my agreement between me and you, and I will increase your descendants greatly.'
3And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,
3Abram bowed with his face to the ground, and God said to him,
4As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be the father of a multitude of nations.
4'As for me, this is my agreement with you: You will be the father of many nations.'
5Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for the father of a multitude of nations have I made thee.
5'Your name will no longer be Abram; instead, your name will be Abraham, because I have made you the father of many nations.'
6And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.
6'I will make you very fruitful. I will make nations out of you, and kings will come from your family.'
7And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee and to thy seed after thee.
7'I will keep this agreement between me and you and your descendants after you for generations to come. It is a permanent agreement to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.'
8And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land of thy sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.
8'I will give to you and your descendants the land where you are now a stranger—the whole land of Canaan—as a permanent possession; and I will be their God.'
9And God said unto Abraham, And as for thee, thou shalt keep my covenant, thou, and thy seed after thee throughout their generations.
9God also said to Abraham, 'As for you, you must keep my agreement, both you and your descendants after you for generations to come.'
10This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee: every male among you shall be circumcised.
10'This is the agreement you are to keep between me and you and your descendants: Every male among you must be circumcised.'
11And ye shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of a covenant betwixt me and you.
11'You must be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin, and this will be the sign of the agreement between me and you.'
12And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every male throughout your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any foreigner that is not of thy seed.
12'For generations to come, every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your house or bought with money from any foreigner who is not your biological child.'
13He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.
13'Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised. My agreement in your flesh will be a permanent agreement.'
14And the uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.
14'Any uncircumcised male who has not been circumcised in the flesh must be cut off from his people; he has broken my agreement.'
15And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.
15God said to Abraham, 'As for your wife Sarai, do not call her Sarai anymore; her name will be Sarah.'
16And I will bless her, and moreover I will give thee a son of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall be of her.
16'I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.'
17Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is a hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?
17Abraham bowed with his face to the ground and laughed. He said to himself, 'Can a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Can Sarah have a baby at the age of ninety?'
18And Abraham said unto God, Oh that Ishmael might live before thee!
18Then Abraham said to God, 'If only Ishmael could live under your blessing!'
19And God said, Nay, but Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his seed after him.
19God said, 'No, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will name him Isaac. I will establish my agreement with him as a permanent agreement for his descendants after him.'
20And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.
20'As for Ishmael, I have heard you. I will certainly bless him; I will make him fruitful and increase his numbers greatly. He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation.'
21But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.
21'But I will establish my agreement with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this time next year.'
22And he left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham.
22When God finished talking with him, he went up from Abraham.
23And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him.
23That very day, Abraham took his son Ishmael and all those born in his household or bought with his money—every male in his household—and circumcised them, just as God had told him.
