What Ezra 8:14 means
Uthai and Zabbud lead seventy males from the sons of Bigvai. This final entry closes the enumeration of heads of houses and their numbers. The sons of Bigvai also appeared among earlier returnees, reinforcing the theme of continuity across generations and waves. By ending with a solid number, the list conveys a substantial, organized caravan. The care devoted to naming these leaders and tallies frames the rest of the chapter, where spiritual and practical measures will depend on knowing precisely who is present and able to serve. This accuracy undergirds the trust required for the stewardship of sacred gifts on the journey.

Context
Verse 14 concludes the list that began at verse 2, completing the roster of Ezra’s companions. With the catalog in place, the narrative shifts in verse 15 to a staging point at the Ahava river. There, Ezra surveys the people and the priests and identifies a critical deficiency: no sons of Levi are present. This assessment sets the stage for targeted recruitment (verses 16–20), followed by a corporate fast for God’s protection (verses 21–23), and then the assignment and weighing of valuable offerings for transport (verses 24–30), before the account of the journey itself (verses 31–36).
v.13And of the sons of Adonikam, that were the last; and these are their names: Eliphelet, Jeuel, and Shemaiah; and with them threescore males.
v.14This passage
v.15And I gathered them together to the river that runneth to Ahava; and there we encamped three days: and I viewed the people, and the priests, and found there none of the sons of Levi.
