What Ezra 6:15 means

The temple is finished on the third day of Adar, in the sixth year of Darius. This concise report underscores God’s faithfulness and the resolution of a long-delayed work. The precise date testifies to the reliability of the narrative and allows readers to see the span from foundation to completion across years of opposition and renewal. What began under Cyrus has now reached fulfillment under Darius. God’s purposes are not thwarted by changing rulers; in His time, He brings the building of His house to completion for the good of His people.

Context

With the completion dated, the building phase closes. The narrative will now turn from construction to consecration. Verses 16–18 will describe the joyful dedication, offerings, and the reestablishment of priestly and Levitical service according to the book of Moses. After worship is ordered, verses 19–22 will recount the observance of Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread, presenting a community reunited around sacrificial atonement, purity, and festival joy in the restored house of God.

v.14And the elders of the Jews builded and prospered, through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. And they builded and finished it, according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the decree of Cyrus, and Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia.

v.15This passage

v.16And the children of Israel, the priests and the Levites, and the rest of the children of the captivity, kept the dedication of this house of God with joy.
