What Ezra 2:8 means
The children of Zattu, nine hundred forty and five, are recorded. This near-thousand group underscores that the return was numerically significant. Such a body would provide critical support in reopening fields, repairing homes, and protecting settlements. The census preserves the dignity and memory of those who made the costly choice to return from a settled life in Babylon to an uncertain future in a devastated land. By carefully noting their number, Ezra’s account affirms their belonging within the restored Israel, whose communal integrity depended on families of varied sizes taking their place in the shared task of renewal.

Context
We are still in the section enumerating families by name and count. Zattu’s entry is one of several near in size, building a picture of a robust laity returning under recognized leaders (v. 2). The flow will maintain this rhythm through verse 20, after which the focus will pivot to towns and villages (vv. 21–35). The later totals (vv. 64–67) will synthesize these scattered numbers into a comprehensive view of the returning assembly.
