1And it came to pass in the eleventh year, in the firstdayof the month, that the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,

1On the first day of the month in the eleventh year of our exile, the word of the LORD came to me.

2Son of man, because that Tyre hath said against Jerusalem, Aha, she is broken that was the gate of the peoples; she is turned unto me; I shall be replenished, now that she is laid waste:

2Son of man, the city of Tyre has bragged about Jerusalem, saying, 'Aha! The gateway for the nations is broken, and its trade has turned to me. I will grow rich now that she is in ruins.'

3therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah, Behold, I am against thee, O Tyre, and will cause many nations to come up against thee, as the sea causeth its waves to come up.

3Therefore, this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am against you, Tyre! I will bring many nations against you, rising up like the waves of the sea.

4And they shall destroy the walls of Tyre, and break down her towers: I will also scrape her dust from her, and make her a bare rock.

4They will destroy the walls of Tyre and pull down her towers. I will scrape away her soil and leave her as a bare rock.

5She shall be a place for the spreading of nets in the midst of the sea; for I have spoken it, saith the Lord Jehovah; and she shall become a spoil to the nations.

5She will become a place in the middle of the sea where fishermen spread their nets, for I have spoken, declares the Sovereign LORD. She will be looted by the nations.

6And her daughters that are in the field shall be slain with the sword: and they shall know that I am Jehovah.

6The villages on the mainland belonging to Tyre will be destroyed by the sword. Then they will know that I am the LORD.

7For thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Behold, I will bring upon Tyre Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, king of kings, from the north, with horses, and with chariots, and with horsemen, and a company, and much people.

7For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am bringing King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, the king of kings, against Tyre from the north. He will come with horses, chariots, cavalry, and a massive army.

8He shall slay with the sword thy daughters in the field; and he shall make forts against thee, and cast up a mound against thee, and raise up the buckler against thee.

8He will kill your people in the mainland villages with the sword. He will build siege walls, throw up a dirt ramp, and raise a wall of shields against you.

9And he shall set his battering engines against thy walls, and with his axes he shall break down thy towers.

9He will smash his battering rams against your walls and tear down your towers with his axes.

10By reason of the abundance of his horses their dust shall cover thee: thy walls shall shake at the noise of the horsemen, and of the wagons, and of the chariots, when he shall enter into thy gates, as men enter into a city wherein is made a breach.

10His many horses will cover you in a cloud of dust. Your walls will shake at the noise of the cavalry, the wagons, and the chariots when he enters your gates like an army entering a city that has been broken open.

11With the hoofs of his horses shall he tread down all thy streets; he shall slay thy people with the sword; and the pillars of thy strength shall go down to the ground.

11The hooves of his horses will trample all your streets. He will kill your people with the sword, and your strong pillars will collapse to the ground.

12And they shall make a spoil of thy riches, and make a prey of thy merchandise; and they shall break down thy walls, and destroy thy pleasant houses; and they shall lay thy stones and thy timber and thy dust in the midst of the waters.

12They will plunder your wealth and loot your trade goods. They will tear down your walls and destroy your beautiful homes. They will throw your stones, your timber, and even your soil into the sea.

13And I will cause the noise of thy songs to cease; and the sound of thy harps shall be no more heard.

13I will stop the noise of your songs, and the music of your harps will never be heard again.

14And I will make thee a bare rock; thou shalt be a place for the spreading of nets; thou shalt be built no more: for I Jehovah have spoken it, saith the Lord Jehovah.

14I will turn you into a bare rock, a place for fishermen to spread their nets. You will never be rebuilt, for I, the LORD, have spoken, declares the Sovereign LORD.

15Thus saith the Lord Jehovah to Tyre: shall not the isles shake at the sound of thy fall, when the wounded groan, when the slaughter is made in the midst of thee?

15This is what the Sovereign LORD says to Tyre: Won’t the coastlands shake at the sound of your fall, when the wounded groan and the slaughter happens within you?

16Then all the princes of the sea shall come down from their thrones, and lay aside their robes, and strip off their broidered garments: they shall clothe themselves with trembling; they shall sit upon the ground, and shall tremble every moment, and be astonished at thee.

16Then all the rulers of the sea will step down from their thrones. They will take off their robes and remove their embroidered clothes. Shaking with fear, they will sit on the ground and tremble constantly, horrified at what happened to you.

17And they shall take up a lamentation over thee, and say to thee, How art thou destroyed, that wast inhabited by seafaring men, the renowned city, that was strong in the sea, she and her inhabitants, that caused their terror to be on all that dwelt there!

17They will sing a funeral song for you, saying: 'How you have perished, you famous city once filled with seafaring people! You were powerful on the sea, you and your citizens, and you terrified everyone who lived there!'

18Now shall the isles tremble in the day of thy fall; yea, the isles that are in the sea shall be dismayed at thy departure.

18Now the coastlands tremble on the day of your fall; the islands in the sea are terrified because of your destruction.

19For thus saith the Lord Jehovah: When I shall make thee a desolate city, like the cities that are not inhabited; when I shall bring up the deep upon thee, and the great waters shall cover thee;

19For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I will make you a ruined city, like cities that are no longer inhabited. I will bring the deep ocean waters over you and cover you with the great sea.

20then will I bring thee down with them that descend into the pit, to the people of old time, and will make thee to dwell in the nether parts of the earth, in the places that are desolate of old, with them that go down to the pit, that thou be not inhabited; and I will set glory in the land of the living.

20I will bring you down into the pit to join those who died long ago. I will make you live in the world below, in the ancient ruins, with those who have gone down to the pit. You will never be inhabited again or have a place in the land of the living.

21I will make thee a terror, and thou shalt no more have any being; though thou be sought for, yet shalt thou never be found again, saith the Lord Jehovah.

21I will bring you to a terrifying end, and you will be no more. People will look for you, but they will never find you again, declares the Sovereign LORD.
