1Moreover the Spirit lifted me up, and brought me unto the east gate of Jehovah’s house, which looketh eastward: and behold, at the door of the gate five and twenty men; and I saw in the midst of them Jaazaniah the son of Azzur, and Pelatiah the son of Benaiah, princes of the people.

1Then the Spirit lifted me up and brought me to the east gate of the Lord’s temple, which faces the sunrise. There at the entrance of the gate were twenty-five men. Among them I saw Jaazaniah son of Azzur and Pelatiah son of Benaiah, who were leaders of the people.

2And he said unto me, Son of man, these are the men that devise iniquity, and that give wicked counsel in this city;

2The Lord said to me, 'Son of man, these are the men who are planning evil and giving bad advice in this city.'

3that say, The time is not near to build houses: this city is the caldron, and we are the flesh.

3'They say, "It is not the right time to build houses. This city is the cooking pot, and we are the meat inside it protecting us." '

4Therefore prophesy against them, prophesy, O son of man.

4'Therefore, prophesy against them; prophesy, O son of man!'

5And the Spirit of Jehovah fell upon me, and he said unto me, Speak, Thus saith Jehovah: Thus have ye said, O house of Israel; for I know the things that come into your mind.

5Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon me and told me to say: 'This is what the Lord says: This is what you are saying, O people of Israel. I know exactly what is going through your minds.'

6Ye have multiplied your slain in this city, and ye have filled the streets thereof with the slain.

6'You have killed many people in this city, filling its streets with their dead bodies.'

7Therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Your slain whom ye have laid in the midst of it, they are the flesh, and this city is the caldron; but ye shall be brought forth out of the midst of it.

7'Therefore, the Lord God says: The people you have killed and left there are the meat, and this city is the pot. But I will drag you out of it.'

8Ye have feared the sword; and I will bring the sword upon you, saith the Lord Jehovah.

8'You are afraid of the sword, so I will bring the sword against you, says the Lord God.'

9And I will bring you forth out of the midst thereof, and deliver you into the hands of strangers, and will execute judgments among you.

9'I will drive you out of the city and hand you over to foreigners, and I will carry out my punishment against you.'

10Ye shall fall by the sword; I will judge you in the border of Israel; and ye shall know that I am Jehovah.

10'You will die by the sword. I will judge you at the borders of Israel, and then you will know that I am the Lord.'

11This city shall not be your caldron, neither shall ye be the flesh in the midst thereof; I will judge you in the border of Israel;

11'This city will not be a pot for you, and you will not be the meat safely tucked inside it; I will judge you at the borders of Israel.'

12and ye shall know that I am Jehovah: for ye have not walked in my statutes, neither have ye executed mine ordinances, but have done after the ordinances of the nations that are round about you.

12'Then you will know that I am the Lord. You have not followed my rules or obeyed my laws; instead, you have acted just like the nations around you.'

13And it came to pass, when I prophesied, that Pelatiah the son of Benaiah died. Then fell I down upon my face, and cried with a loud voice, and said, Ah Lord Jehovah! wilt thou make a full end of the remnant of Israel?

13While I was prophesying, Pelatiah son of Benaiah died. Then I fell face down and cried out loudly, 'O Lord God! Are you going to completely destroy everyone left in Israel?'

14And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,

14Then the word of the Lord came to me:

15Son of man, thy brethren, even thy brethren, the men of thy kindred, and all the house of Israel, all of them, are they unto whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said, Get you far from Jehovah; unto us is this land given for a possession.

15'Son of man, your own relatives and all the people of Israel who are in exile are the ones the people living in Jerusalem are talking about. They say, "Stay far away from the Lord; this land has been given to us as our own property." '

16Therefore say, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Whereas I have removed them far off among the nations, and whereas I have scattered them among the countries, yet will I be to them a sanctuary for a little while in the countries where they are come.

16'Therefore say: This is what the Lord God says: Although I sent them far away among the nations and scattered them across many lands, I have been a sanctuary for them for a little while in the countries where they have gone.'

17Therefore say, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: I will gather you from the peoples, and assemble you out of the countries where ye have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel.

17'Therefore say: This is what the Lord God says: I will gather you from the nations and bring you back from the countries where you were scattered, and I will give the land of Israel back to you.'

18And they shall come thither, and they shall take away all the detestable things thereof and all the abominations thereof from thence.

18'When they return to it, they will remove all its disgusting idols and all its hateful practices.'

19And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them a heart of flesh;

19'I will give them a single heart and put a new spirit within them. I will take away their stubborn heart of stone and give them a tender heart of flesh.'

20that they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God.

20'Then they will follow my decrees and be careful to obey my laws. They will be my people, and I will be their God.'

21But as for them whose heart walketh after the heart of their detestable things and their abominations, I will bring their way upon their own heads, saith the Lord Jehovah.

21'But as for those whose hearts are set on their disgusting idols and hateful practices, I will pay them back for what they have done, says the Lord God.'

22Then did the cherubim lift up their wings, and the wheels were beside them; and the glory of the God of Israel was over them above.

22Then the winged creatures spread their wings with the wheels beside them, and the glory of the God of Israel was above them.

23And the glory of Jehovah went up from the midst of the city, and stood upon the mountain which is on the east side of the city.

23The glory of the Lord rose from within the city and stopped over the mountain that is on the east side of the city.

24And the Spirit lifted me up, and brought me in the vision by the Spirit of God into Chaldea, to them of the captivity. So the vision that I had seen went up from me.

24Then the Spirit lifted me up and brought me back to the exiles in Babylonia through the vision given by the Spirit of God. Then the vision I had seen left me.

25Then I spake unto them of the captivity all the things that Jehovah had showed me.

25And I told the exiles everything that the Lord had shown me.
