1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, to the saints that are at Ephesus, and the faithful in Christ Jesus:

1From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus because it was God’s will, to the holy people in Ephesus who are faithful followers of Christ Jesus:

2Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

2May grace and peace be given to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3Blessedbethe God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ:

3Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us every spiritual blessing in the heavenly world because we belong to Christ.

4even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blemish before him in love:

4God chose us in Christ before the world was even made, so that we would be holy and without fault in his eyes through love.

5having foreordained us unto adoption as sons through Jesus Christ unto himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,

5He decided ahead of time to adopt us as his own children through Jesus Christ, because it pleased him and was what he wanted to do.

6to the praise of the glory of his grace, which he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved:

6This brings praise to the glorious grace he showed us, which he gave us freely through his dearly loved Son.

7in whom we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,

7In Christ, we are set free through his blood and our sins are forgiven, showing just how rich God’s grace really is.

8which he made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence,

8He poured out this grace on us with all wisdom and understanding.

9making known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he purposed in him

9God let us know the secret of his plan, which was based on his own good purpose to be carried out through Christ.

10unto a dispensation of the fulness of the times, to sum up all things in Christ, the things in the heavens, and the things upon the earth; in him, I say,

10When the right time comes, he will bring everything together under one head, Christ—everything in heaven and everything on earth.

11in whom also we were made a heritage, having been foreordained according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his will;

11In Christ we were also chosen as his own people, having been planned for this according to the purpose of the one who works out everything the way he decides.

12to the end that we should be unto the praise of his glory, we who had before hoped in Christ:

12He did this so that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, would live in a way that brings praise to his glory.

13in whom ye also, having heard the word of the truth, the gospel of your salvation,—in whom, having also believed, ye were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,

13You also became part of this when you heard the message of truth, the good news of your salvation. When you believed in him, you were marked with his seal, the promised Holy Spirit.

14which is an earnest of our inheritance, unto the redemption of God’s own possession, unto the praise of his glory.

14The Spirit is the down payment on our inheritance, guaranteeing that God will completely rescue his own people and bring praise to his glory.

15For this cause I also, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which is among you, and the love which ye show toward all the saints,

15That is why, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, I have not stopped.

16cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;

16I constantly give thanks for you and remember you in my prayers.

17that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him;

17I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, would give you a spirit of wisdom and insight so that you can truly know him.

18having the eyes of your heart enlightened, that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

18I pray that your hearts will be opened to see the truth, so you can understand the hope he has called you to, the rich and glorious inheritance he has for his people,

19and what the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to that working of the strength of his might

19and the incredibly great power he has for us who believe. This power is the same mighty strength

20which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and made him to sit at his right hand in the heavenly places,

20that God used in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right side in the heavenly places.

21far above all rule, and authority, and power, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:

21He is now far above any ruler, authority, power, or leader, and above every name that can be given, not only in this world but also in the world to come.

22and he put all things in subjection under his feet, and gave him to be head over all things to the church,

22God put everything under Christ’s authority and made him the head over everything for the benefit of the church.

23which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

23The church is his body; it is filled with Christ, the one who fills everything everywhere.
