1When Jehovah thyGod shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and shall cast out many nations from before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou,

1When the Lord thy God shall have brought thee into the land, which thou art going in to possess, and shall have destroyed many nations before thee, the Hethite, and the Gergezite, and the Amorrhite, and the Chanaanite, and the Pherezite, and the Hevite, and the Jebusite, seven nations much more numerous than thou art, and stronger than thou:

1When the Lord your God takes you into the land where you are going, which is to be your heritage, and has sent out the nations before you, the Hittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and stronger than you;

2and when Jehovah thyGod shall give them up before thee and thou shalt smite them, then shalt thou utterly destroy them: thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them.

2And the Lord thy God shall have delivered them to thee, thou shalt utterly destroy them. Thou shalt make no league with them, nor shew mercy to them:

2And when the Lord has given them up into your hands and you have overcome them, give them up to complete destruction: make no agreement with them, and have no mercy on them:

3And thou shalt make no marriages with them: thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor take his daughter for thy son;

3Neither shalt thou make marriages with them. Thou shalt not give thy daughter to his son, nor take his daughter for thy son:

3Do not take wives or husbands from among them; do not give your daughters to their sons, or take their daughters for your sons.

4for he will turn away thy son from following me, and they will serve othergods, and the anger of Jehovah will be kindled against you, and he will destroy thee quickly.

4For she will turn away thy son from following me, that he may rather serve strange gods, and the wrath of the Lord will be kindled, and will quickly destroy thee.

4For through them your sons will be turned from me to the worship of other gods: and the Lord will be moved to wrath against you and send destruction on you quickly.

5But thus shall ye deal with them: ye shall break down their altars, and shatter their statues, and hew down their Asherahs, and burn their graven images with fire.

5But thus rather shall you deal with them: Destroy their altars, and break their statues, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven things.

5But this is what you are to do to them: their altars are to be pulled down and their pillars broken, and their holy trees cut down and their images burned with fire.

6For a holy people art thou unto Jehovah thyGod: Jehovah thyGod hath chosen thee to be unto him a people for a possession, above all the peoples that are upon the face of the earth.

6Because thou art a holy people to the Lord thy God. The Lord thy God hath chosen thee, to be his peculiar people of all peoples that are upon the earth.

6For you are a holy people to the Lord your God: marked out by the Lord your God to be his special people out of all the nations on the face of the earth.

7Not because ye were more in number than all the peoples, hath Jehovah been attached to you and chosen you, for ye are the fewest of all the peoples;

7Not because you surpass all nations in number, is the Lord joined unto you, and hath chosen you, for you are the fewest of any people:

7The Lord did not give you his love or take you for himself because you were more in number than any other people; for you were the smallest of the nations:

8but because Jehovah loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath Jehovah brought you out with a powerful hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

8But because the Lord hath loved you, and hath kept his oath, which he swore to your fathers: and hath brought you out with a strong hand, and redeemed you from the house of bondage, out of the hand of Pharao the king of Egypt.

8But because of his love for you, and in order to keep his oath to your fathers, the Lord took you out with the strength of his hand, making you free from the prison-house and from the hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt.

9And thou shalt know that Jehovah thyGod, he isGod, the faithfulGod, who keepeth covenant and mercy to a thousand generations with them that love him and keep his commandments;

9And thou shalt know that the Lord thy God, he is a strong and faithful God, keeping his covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments, unto a thousand generations:

9Be certain, then, that the Lord your God is God; whose faith and mercy are unchanging, who keeps his word through a thousand generations to those who have love for him and keep his laws;

10and repayeth them that hate him [each] to his face, to cause them to perish: he delayeth not with him that hateth him, he will repay him to his face.

10And repaying forthwith them that hate him, so as to destroy them, without further delay immediately rendering to them what they deserve.

10Rewarding his haters to their face with destruction; he will have no mercy on his hater, but will give him open punishment.

11And thou shalt keep the commandment, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which I command thee this day, to do them.

11Keep therefore the precepts and ceremonies and judgments, which I command thee this day to do.

11So keep the orders and the laws and the decisions which I give you today and do them.

12And it shall come to pass, if ye hearken to these ordinances, and keep and do them, that Jehovah thyGod will keep with thee the covenant and the mercy which he swore unto thy fathers;

12If after thou hast heard these judgments, thou keep and do them, the Lord thy God will also keep his covenant to thee, and the mercy which he swore to thy fathers:

12And it will be, that if you give attention to these decisions and keep and do them, then the Lord will keep his agreement with you and his mercy, as he said in his oath to your fathers.

13and he will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee, and will bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy ground, thy corn and thy new wine, and thine oil, the offspring of thy kine, and the increase of thy sheep, in the land which he swore unto thy fathers to give thee.

13And he will love thee and multiply thee, and will bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy vintage, thy oil, and thy herds, and the flocks of thy sheep upon the land, for which he swore to thy fathers that he would give it thee.

13And he will give you his love, blessing you and increasing you: he will send his blessing on the offspring of your body and the fruit of your land, your grain and your wine and your oil, the increase of your cattle and the young of your flock, in the land which by his oath to your fathers he undertook to give you.

14Thou shalt be blessed above all the peoples; there shall not be male or female barren with thee, or with thy cattle;

14Blessed shalt thou be among all people. No one shall be barren among you of either sex, neither of men nor cattle.

14You will have greater blessings than any other people: no male or female among you or among your cattle will be without offspring.

15and Jehovah will take away from thee all sickness, and none of the evil infirmities of Egypt, which thou knowest, will he put upon thee; but he will lay them upon all them that hate thee.

15The Lord will take away from thee all sickness: and the grievous infirmities of Egypt, which thou knowest, he will not bring upon thee, but upon thy enemies.

15And the Lord will take away from you all disease, and will not put on you any of the evil diseases of Egypt which you have seen, but will put them on your haters.

16And thou shalt consume all the peoples that Jehovah thyGod will give up unto thee; thine eye shall not spare them, and thou shalt not serve theirgods; for that would be a snare unto thee.

16Thou shalt consume all the people, which the Lord thy God will deliver to thee. Thy eye shall not spare them, neither shalt thou serve their gods, lest they be thy ruin.

16And you are to send destruction on all the peoples which the Lord your God gives into your hands; have no pity on them, and do not give worship to their gods; for that will be a cause of sin to you.

17If thou shouldest say in thy heart, These nations are greater than I; how can I dispossess them?

17If thou say in thy heart: These nations are more than I, how shall I be able to destroy them?

17If you say in your hearts, These nations are greater in number than we are: how are we to take their land from them?

18fear them not; remember well what Jehovah thyGod did unto Pharaoh, and unto all the Egyptians;

18Fear not, but remember what the Lord thy God did to Pharao and to all the Egyptians,

18Have no fear of them, but keep well in mind what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt;

19the great trials which thine eyes saw, and the signs, and the wonders, and the powerful hand, and the stretched-out arm, whereby Jehovah thyGod brought thee out: so will Jehovah thyGod do unto all the peoples whom thou fearest.

19The exceeding great plagues, which thy eyes saw, and the signs and wonders, and the strong hand, and the stretched out arm, with which the Lord thy God brought thee out: so will he do to all the people, whom thou fearest.

19The great punishments which your eyes saw, and the signs and the wonders and the strong hand and the stretched-out arm, by which the Lord your God took you out: so will the Lord your God do to all the peoples who are the cause of your fears.

20Moreover, Jehovah thyGod will send the hornet among them, until they that are left, and they that hide themselves from thee, are destroyed.

20Moreover the Lord thy God will send also hornets among them, until he destroy and consume all that have escaped thee, and could hide themselves.

20And the Lord will send a hornet among them, till all the rest who have kept themselves safe from you in secret places have been cut off.

21Thou shalt not be afraid of them; for Jehovah thyGod is in thy midst, aGod great and terrible.

21Thou shalt not fear them, because the Lord thy God is in the midst of thee, a God mighty and terrible:

21Have no fear of them: for the Lord your God is with you, a great God greatly to be feared.

22And Jehovah thyGod will cast out those nations from before thee by little and little; thou shalt not be able to make an end of them at once, lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee.

22He will consume these nations in thy sight by little and little and by degrees. Thou wilt not be able to destroy them altogether: lest perhaps the beasts of the earth should increase upon thee.

22The Lord your God will send out the nations before you little by little; they are not to be rooted out quickly, for fear that the beasts of the field may be increased overmuch against you.

23But Jehovah thyGod will give them up before thee, and will confound them with great consternation, until they are destroyed.

23But the Lord thy God shall deliver them in thy sight: and shall slay them until they be utterly destroyed.

23But the Lord your God will give them up into your hands, overpowering them till their destruction is complete.

24And he will give their kings into thy hand, and thou shalt put out their name from under the heavens; no man shall stand before thee, until thou hast destroyed them.

24And he shall deliver their kings into thy hands, and thou shalt destroy their names from under Heaven: no man shall be able to resist thee, until thou destroy them.

24He will give their kings into your hands, and you will put their names out of existence under heaven; there is not one of them who will not give way before you, till their destruction is complete.

25The graven images of theirgods shall ye burn with fire; thou shalt not covet the silver and gold [that is] on them and take it unto thee, lest thou be ensnared therein; for it is an abomination to Jehovah thyGod.

25Their graven things thou shalt burn with fire: thou shalt not covet the silver and gold of which they are made, neither shalt thou take to thee any thing thereof, lest thou offend, because it is an abomination to the Lord thy God.

25The images of their gods are to be burned with fire: have no desire for the gold and silver on them, and do not take it for yourselves, for it will be a danger to you: it is a thing disgusting to the Lord your God:

26And thou shalt not bring an abomination into thy house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing.

26Neither shalt thou bring any thing of the idol into thy house, lest thou become an anathema, like it. Thou shalt detest it as dung, and shalt utterly abhor it as uncleanness and filth, because it is an anathema.

26And you may not take a disgusting thing into your house, and so become cursed with its curse: but keep yourselves from it, turning from it with fear and hate, for it is a cursed thing.
