What Colossians 1:16 means

“All things” were created in Christ—by His agency, within His domain, and for His purposes. This includes the entire cosmos: heaven and earth, visible and invisible realms, including ranks of spiritual authorities (“thrones or dominions or principalities or powers”). Nothing lies outside His creative sovereignty. Creation is not random or autonomous; it exists “through him, and unto him.” He is both the Maker and the goal. This dismantles any fear of spiritual powers or fascination with them; they are creatures, not rivals. For believers, reality becomes Christ-centered: every sphere, seen and unseen, is ordered by and directed to the Son.

Context

Verse 16 explains why Christ is “firstborn” over creation (verse 15): He is Creator and goal of all things, including spiritual authorities that some in Colossæ may have revered. Verse 17 will add His preexistence and sustaining role, and verse 18 will show His headship in redemption. The accumulating statements leave no room for a diminished Christology; the One who saves is the One who made and rules everything.

v.15who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation;

v.16This passage

v.17and he is before all things, and in him all things consist.
