1Woe <FI>to<Fi> those secure in Zion, And those confident in the mount of Samaria, The marked of the chief of the nations, And come to them have the house of Israel.

1Woe to you that are wealthy in Sion, and to you that have confidence in the mountain of Samaria: ye great men, heads of the people, that go in with state into the house of Israel.

2Pass ye over <FI>to<Fi> Calneh and see, And go thence <FI>to<Fi> Hamath the great, And go down <FI>to<Fi> Gath of the Philistines, Are <FI>they<Fi> better than these kingdoms? Greater <FI>is<Fi> their border than your border?

2Pass ye over to Chalane, and see, and go from thence into Emath the great: and go down into Geth of the Philistines, and to all the best kingdoms of these: if their border be larger than your border.

3Who are putting away the day of evil, And ye bring nigh the seat of violence,

3You that are separated unto the evil day: and that approach to the throne of iniquity;

4Who are lying down on beds of ivory, And are spread out on their couches, And are eating lambs from the flock, And calves from the midst of the stall,

4You that sleep upon beds of ivory, and are wanton on your couches: that eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the herd;

5Who are taking part according to the psaltery, Like David they invented for themselves instruments of music;

5You that sing to the sound of the psaltery: they have thought themselves to have instruments of music like David;

6Who are drinking with bowls of wine, And <FI>with<Fi> chief perfumes anoint <FI>themselves<Fi> , And have not been pained for the breach of Joseph.

6That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the best ointments: and they are not concerned for the affliction of Joseph.

7Therefore now they remove at the head of the captives, And turned aside is the mourning-feast of stretched-out ones.

7Wherefore now they shall go captive at the head of them that go into captivity: and the faction of the luxurious ones shall be taken away.

8Sworn hath the Lord Jehovah by Himself, An affirmation of Jehovah, God of Hosts: I am abominating the excellency of Jacob, And his high places I have hated, And I have delivered up the city and its fulness.

8The Lord God hath sworn by his own soul, saith the Lord the God of hosts: I detest the pride of Jacob, and I hate his houses, and I will deliver up the city with the inhabitants thereof.

9And if there are left ten persons in one house, It hath come to pass--that they have died.

9And if there remain ten men in one house, they also shall die.

10And lifted him up hath his loved one, even his burner, To bring forth the bones from the house, And he said to him who <FI>is<Fi> in the sides of the house, `Is there yet with thee?' And he said, `None,' then he said, `Hush! Save to make mention of the name of Jehovah.'

10And a man's kinsman shall take him up, and shall burn him, that he may carry the bones out of the house; and he shall say to him that is in the inner rooms of the house: Is there yet any with thee?

11For lo, Jehovah is commanding, And He hath smitten the great house <FI>with<Fi> breaches, And the little house <FI>with<Fi> clefts.

11And he shall answer: There is an end. And he shall say to him: Hold thy peace, and mention not the name of the Lord.

12Do horses run on a rock? Doth one plough <FI>it<Fi> with oxen? For ye have turned to gall judgment, And the fruit of righteousness to wormwood.

12For behold the Lord hath commanded, and he will strike the greater house with breaches, and the lesser house with clefts.

13O ye who are rejoicing at nothing, Who are saying, `Have we not by our strength taken to ourselves horns?'

13Can horses run upon the rocks, or can any one plough with buffles? for you have turned judgment into bitterness, and the fruit of justice into wormwood.

14Surely, lo, I am raising against you a nation, O house of Israel, An affirmation of Jehovah, God of Hosts, And they have oppressed you from the coming in to Hamath, Unto the stream of the desert.

14You that rejoice in a thing of nought: you that say: Have we not taken unto us horns by our own strength?

15(not in this translation)

15But behold, I will raise up a nation against you, O house of Israel, saith the Lord the God of hosts; and they shall destroy you from the entrance of Emath, even to the torrent of the desert.
