What Acts 28:23 means

On the appointed day, many come to Paul’s lodging. He expounds, testifies about the kingdom of God, and seeks to persuade them concerning Jesus from morning till evening, using both the Law of Moses and the Prophets. This is apostolic evangelism: patient, Scripture-saturated, Christ-centered. Paul connects the grand theme—the reign of God—with the person and work of Jesus, showing continuity with Israel’s Scriptures. Testifying and persuading signal both proclamation and reasoned argument. The length of the session reflects the gravity of the matter. Faith comes by hearing the Word rightly opened, and Paul labors to display that Jesus is the hope of Israel now realized.

Context

Granted an open hearing (v. 22), Paul devotes a full day to teaching from the Scriptures (v. 23). The immediate outcome appears in verse 24: some believe, others do not. This division mirrors earlier responses throughout Acts. In verses 25–27, as disagreement leads to departure, Paul cites Isaiah to explain the spiritual hardness that resists God’s Word. He will then announce the turning of salvation to the Gentiles (v. 28).

v.22But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, it is known to us that everywhere it is spoken against.

v.23This passage

v.24And some believed the things which were spoken, and some disbelieved.
