What Acts 16:31 means

Paul and Silas answer: “Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your house.” Salvation rests on trusting Jesus—His person, work, and authority. “Lord” affirms His divine rule; “Jesus” names the Savior. Faith, not works, is the way. The promise extends to the household, not as automatic salvation, but as an open door: the same faith that saves the jailor is offered to all under his roof. The gospel addresses families, inviting a shared joy in Christ. In a moment, the path is made plain—no ritual ladder, only a Person to receive. The Savior who opened prison doors now opens hearts.

Context

This verse directly answers the jailor’s question from verse 30 and sets up further explanation in verse 32. The emphasis on faith in the Lord Jesus will be fleshed out as the apostles speak the word to all in the house. The narrative will then show the tangible evidence of conversion: compassion toward wounded prisoners, immediate baptism, and a meal of rejoicing in verses 33–34.

v.30and brought them out and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

v.31This passage

v.32And they spake the word of the Lord unto him, with all that were in his house.
