1I give you orders, before God and Christ Jesus, who will be the judge of the living and the dead, and by his revelation and his kingdom;
1I testify beforeGod and Christ Jesus, who is about to judge living and dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom,
1I do fully testify, then, before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who is about to judge living and dead at his manifestation and his reign--
2Be preaching the word at all times, in every place; make protests, say sharp words, give comfort, with long waiting and teaching;
2proclaim the word; be urgent in season [and] out of season, convict, rebuke, encourage, with all longsuffering and doctrine.
2preach the word; be earnest in season, out of season, convict, rebuke, exhort, in all long-suffering and teaching,
3For the time will come when they will not take the true teaching; but, moved by their desires, they will get for themselves a great number of teachers for the pleasure of hearing them;
3For the time shall be when they will not bear sound teaching; but according to their own lusts will heap up to themselves teachers, having an itching ear;
3for there shall be a season when the sound teaching they will not suffer, but according to their own desires to themselves they shall heap up teachers--itching in the hearing,
4And shutting their ears to what is true, will be turned away to belief in foolish stories.
4and they will turn away their ear from the truth, and will have turned aside to fables.
4and indeed, from the truth the hearing they shall turn away, and to the fables they shall be turned aside.
5But be self-controlled in all things, do without comfort, go on preaching the good news, completing the work which has been given you to do.
5But thou, be sober in all things, bear evils, do [the] work of an evangelist, fill up the full measure of thy ministry.
5And thou--watch in all things; suffer evil; do the work of one proclaiming good news; of thy ministration make full assurance,
6For I am even now being offered, and my end is near.
6For I am already being poured out, and the time of my release is come.
6for I am already being poured out, and the time of my release hath arrived;
7I have made a good fight, I have come to the end of my journey, I have kept the faith:
7I have combated the good combat, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
7the good strife I have striven, the course I have finished, the faith I have kept,
8From now on, the crown of righteousness is made ready for me, which the Lord, the upright judge, Will give to me at that day: and not only to me, but to all those who have had love for his revelation.
8Henceforth the crown of righteousness is laid up for me, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will render to me in that day; but not only to me, but also to all who love his appearing.
8henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of the righteousness that the Lord--the Righteous Judge--shall give to me in that day, and not only to me, but also to all those loving his manifestation.
9Do your best to come to me before long:
9Use diligence to come to me quickly;
9Be diligent to come unto me quickly,
10For Demas has gone away from me, for love of this present life, and has gone to Thessalonica: Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.
10for Demas has forsaken me, having loved the present age, and is gone to Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.
10for Demas forsook me, having loved the present age, and went on to Thessalonica, Crescens to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia,
11Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and take him with you; for he is of use to me in the work.
11Luke alone is with me. Take Mark, and bring [him] with thyself, for he is serviceable to me for ministry.
11Lukas only is with me; Markus having taken, bring with thyself, for he is profitable to me for ministration;
12Tychicus I sent to Ephesus.
12But Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus.
12and Tychicus I sent to Ephesus;
13The coat which I did not take from Troas and which is with Carpus, get when you come, and the books, specially the papers.
13The cloak which I left behind [me] in Troas at Carpus's, bring when thou comest, and the books, especially the parchments.
13the cloak that I left in Troas with Carpus, coming, bring thou and the books--especially the parchments.
14Alexander the copper-worker did me much wrong: the Lord will give him the reward of his works:
14Alexander the smith did many evil things against me. The Lord will render to him according to his works.
14Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil; may the Lord repay to him according to his works,
15But be on the watch for him, for he was violent in his attacks on our teaching.
15Against whom be thou also on thy guard, for he has greatly withstood our words.
15of whom also do thou beware, for greatly hath he stood against our words;
16At my first meeting with my judges, no one took my part, but all went away from me. May it not be put to their account.
16At my first defence no man stood with me, but all deserted me. May it not be imputed to them.
16in my first defence no one stood with me, but all forsook me, (may it not be reckoned to them!)
17But the Lord was by my side and gave me strength; so that through me the news might be given out in full measure, and all the Gentiles might give ear: and I was taken out of the mouth of the lion.
17But the Lord stood with [me], and gave me power, that through me the proclamation might be fully made, and all [those of] the nations should hear; and I was delivered out of the lion's mouth.
17and the Lord stood by me, and did strengthen me, that through me the preaching might be fully assured, and all the nations might hear, and I was freed out of the mouth of a lion,
18The Lord will keep me safe from every evil work and will give me salvation in his kingdom in heaven: to whom be glory for ever and ever. So be it.
18The Lord shall deliver me from every wicked work, and shall preserve [me] for his heavenly kingdom; to whom [be] glory for the ages of ages. Amen.
18and the Lord shall free me from every evil work, and shall save <FI>me<Fi> --to his heavenly kingdom; to whom <FI>is<Fi> the glory to the ages of the ages! Amen.
19Give my love to Prisca and Aquila and those of the house of Onesiphorus.
19Salute Prisca and Aquila, and the house of Onesiphorus.
19Salute Prisca and Aquilas, and Onesiphorus' household;
20Erastus was stopping at Corinth; but Trophimus, when I last saw him was at Miletus, ill.
20Erastus remained in Corinth, but Trophimus I left behind in Miletus sick.
20Erastus did remain in Corinth, and Trophimus I left in Miletus infirm;
21Do your best to come before the winter. Eubulus sends you his love, and Pudens and Linus and Claudia, and all the brothers.
21Use diligence to come before winter. Eubulus salutes thee, and Pudens, and Linus, and Claudia, and the brethren all.
21be diligent to come before winter. Salute thee doth Eubulus, and Pudens, and Linus, and Claudia, and all the brethren.
