1But know this, that in the last days grievous times shall come.
1You should understand this: in the final days, very difficult times will come.
2For men shall be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, haughty, railers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
2People will love only themselves and money. They will be arrogant, proud, and abusive. They will be disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, and unholy.
3without natural affection, implacable, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, no lovers of good,
3They will have no natural affection and will refuse to make peace. They will slander others, lack self-control, be cruel, and hate what is good.
4traitors, headstrong, puffed up, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God;
4They will betray their friends, be reckless, and be full of pride. They will love pleasure more than they love God.
5holding a form of godliness, but having denied the power thereof: from these also turn away.
5They will act like they are religious, but they will reject the true power of God. Stay away from people like that.
6For of these are they that creep into houses, and take captive silly women laden with sins, led away by divers lusts,
6These are the kind of people who talk their way into homes to control weak-minded women who are burdened with sins and driven by all kinds of desires.
7ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
7These women are always trying to learn something new, but they are never able to understand the truth.
8And even as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also withstand the truth; men corrupted in mind, reprobate concerning the faith.
8Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, these people also oppose the truth. Their minds are corrupt, and their faith is a sham.
9But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be evident unto all men, as theirs also came to be.
9But they won't get very far. Everyone will eventually see how foolish they are, just as happened with those two men.
10But thou didst follow my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, patience,
10But you have closely followed my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, my faith, my patience, my love, and my endurance.
11persecutions, sufferings; what things befell me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: and out of them all the Lord delivered me.
11You know about the persecutions and sufferings I faced in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. I endured those terrible things, and the Lord rescued me from all of them.
12Yea, and all that would live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
12In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.
13But evil men and impostors shall wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.
13But evil people and phonies will go from bad to worse, deceiving others and being deceived themselves.
14But abide thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
14But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught and know to be true, because you know you can trust those who taught you.
15and that from a babe thou hast known the sacred writings which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
15You have known the Holy Scriptures since you were a child. They are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
