1This is now, beloved, the second epistle that I write unto you; and in both of them I stir up your sincere mind by putting you in remembrance;

1Dear friends, this is now the second letter I am writing to you. In both of them, I am trying to wake up your honest thinking by reminding you of certain things.

2that ye should remember the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and the commandment of the Lord and Saviour through your apostles:

2I want you to remember the words spoken long ago by the holy prophets and the command that our Lord and Savior gave through your apostles.

3knowing this first, that in the last days mockers shall come with mockery, walking after their own lusts,

3Most importantly, you must understand that in the last days, people will come who laugh at the truth. They will follow their own evil desires.

4and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for, from the day that the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

4They will say, 'He promised to come, so where is he? Ever since our ancestors died, everything has stayed exactly the same as it has been since the world was first created.'

5For this they wilfully forget, that there were heavens from of old, and an earth compacted out of water and amidst water, by the word of God;

5But they deliberately forget that God spoke a word long ago, and by that word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water.

6by which means the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:

6By these same means, the world of that time was flooded with water and destroyed.

7but the heavens that now are, and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

7By that same word, the present heavens and earth are being held in store for fire. They are being kept until the day of judgment and the destruction of people who have no regard for God.

8But forget not this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

8But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: To the Lord, one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day.走向

9The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some count slackness; but is longsuffering to you-ward, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

9The Lord is not being slow about his promise, as some people think. Instead, he is being patient with you. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to turn away from their sins.

10But the day of the Lord will come as a thief; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

10But the day of the Lord will come unexpectedly, like a thief. On that day, the heavens will disappear with a loud roar, the celestial bodies will be burned up and dissolve, and the earth and everything done in it will be exposed.

11Seeing that these things are thus all to be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy living and godliness,

11Since everything around us will be destroyed in this way, think about what kind of people you should be. You should live holy lives and be devoted to God.

12looking for and earnestly desiring the coming of the day of God, by reason of which the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

12You should look forward to the day of God and hurry it along. On that day, the heavens will be destroyed by fire and the elements will melt in the heat.

13But, according to his promise, we look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

13But we are looking forward to what God has promised: new heavens and a new earth, where everyone does what is right.

14Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for these things, give diligence that ye may be found in peace, without spot and blameless in his sight.

14So, dear friends, while you are waiting for this, work hard to be found living in peace, without any spot or blame in his sight.

15And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given to him, wrote unto you;

15Remember that our Lord’s patience gives people time to be saved. Our dear brother Paul also wrote to you about this, using the wisdom God gave him.

16as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; wherein are some things hard to be understood, which the ignorant and unstedfast wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

16He writes about these things in all his letters. Some parts of his letters are hard to understand, and people who are ignorant and unstable twist his words. They do the same thing with the rest of the Scriptures, which leads to their own destruction.

17Ye therefore, beloved, knowing these things beforehand, beware lest, being carried away with the error of the wicked, ye fall from your own stedfastness.

17So, dear friends, since you have been warned about this ahead of time, be on your guard. Do not let the errors of these wicked people lead you astray and cause you to lose your own firm footing.

18But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and for ever. Amen.

18Instead, continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.
