2 Kings 20

1In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith Jehovah, Set thy house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live.

1Around that time, Hezekiah became so sick that he was about to die. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to him and said, 'This is what the LORD says: Put your affairs in order, because you are going to die; you will not recover.'

2Then he turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto Jehovah, saying,

2Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD.

3Remember now, O Jehovah, I beseech thee, how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore.

3'Please, LORD, remember how I have walked before you faithfully and with a whole heart, doing what is good in your eyes.' And Hezekiah wept bitterly.

4And it came to pass, before Isaiah was gone out into the middle part of the city, that the word of Jehovah came to him, saying,

4Before Isaiah had even left the middle courtyard, the word of the LORD came to him.

5Turn back, and say to Hezekiah the prince of my people, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee; on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of Jehovah.

5'Go back and tell Hezekiah, the leader of my people: This is what the LORD, the God of your ancestor David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears. I will heal you. On the third day from now, you will go up to the Temple of the LORD.'

6And I will add unto thy days fifteen years; and I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.

6'I will add fifteen years to your life. I will rescue you and this city from the king of Assyria. I will defend this city for my own sake and for the sake of my servant David.'

7And Isaiah said, Take a cake of figs. And they took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered.

7Then Isaiah said, 'Prepare a bandage made of dried figs.' They took it and applied it to the infected skin, and he began to recover.

8And Hezekiah said unto Isaiah, What shall be the sign that Jehovah will heal me, and that I shall go up unto the house of Jehovah the third day?

8Hezekiah asked Isaiah, 'What will be the sign that the LORD will heal me and that I will go up to the Temple of the LORD on the third day?'

9And Isaiah said, This shall be the sign unto thee from Jehovah, that Jehovah will do the thing that he hath spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten steps, or go back ten steps?

9Isaiah answered, 'This is the sign from the LORD to prove he will do what he promised: Should the shadow on the stairway go forward ten steps or go back ten steps?'

10And Hezekiah answered, It is a light thing for the shadow to decline ten steps: nay, but let the shadow return backward ten steps.

10'It is easy for the shadow to move forward ten steps,' Hezekiah replied. 'No, make it go backward ten steps.'

11And Isaiah the prophet cried unto Jehovah; and he brought the shadow ten steps backward, by which it had gone down on the dial of Ahaz.

11So the prophet Isaiah called out to the LORD, and the LORD made the shadow go back ten steps on the stairway of Ahaz, reversing the distance it had already gone down.

12At that time Berodach-baladan the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present unto Hezekiah; for he had heard that Hezekiah had been sick.

12At that time, Merodach-baladan son of Baladan, the king of Babylon, sent letters and a gift to Hezekiah because he heard that Hezekiah had been sick.

13And Hezekiah hearkened unto them, and showed them all the house of his precious things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious oil, and the house of his armor, and all that was found in his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah showed them not.

13Hezekiah welcomed the messengers and showed them everything in his treasure houses—the silver, the gold, the spices, the expensive oils, his entire armory, and everything in his storehouses. There was nothing in his palace or in all his kingdom that Hezekiah did not show them.

14Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king Hezekiah, and said unto him, What said these men? and from whence came they unto thee? And Hezekiah said, They are come from a far country, even from Babylon.

14Then the prophet Isaiah went to King Hezekiah and asked, 'What did these men say, and where did they come from?' Hezekiah replied, 'They came from a distant land, from Babylon.'

15And he said, What have they seen in thy house? And Hezekiah answered, All that is in my house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not showed them.

15Isaiah asked, 'What have they seen in your palace?' Hezekiah answered, 'They have seen everything in my palace. There is nothing among my treasures that I did not show them.'

16And Isaiah said unto Hezekiah, Hear the word of Jehovah.

16Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, 'Listen to the word of the LORD:'

17Behold, the days come, that all that is in thy house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store unto this day, shall be carried to Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith Jehovah.

17'The time is coming when everything in your palace, and everything your ancestors have stored up until this day, will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the LORD.'

18And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, whom thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.

18'Some of your own descendants, your own flesh and blood, will be taken away. They will become servants in the palace of the king of Babylon.'

19Then said Hezekiah unto Isaiah, Good is the word of Jehovah which thou hast spoken. He said moreover, Is it not so, if peace and truth shall be in my days?

19Hezekiah said to Isaiah, 'The word of the LORD you have spoken is good.' For he thought, 'At least there will be peace and security during my lifetime.'

20Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and all his might, and how he made the pool, and the conduit, and brought water into the city, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

20Everything else Hezekiah did, all his achievements, and how he made the pool and the tunnel to bring water into the city, is recorded in the book of the history of the kings of Judah.

21And Hezekiah slept with his fathers; and Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.

21Hezekiah died and was buried with his ancestors. Then his son Manasseh became king in his place.
