1The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth; and not I only, but also all they that know the truth;

1From the elder to the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in the truth—and not only I, but also everyone who knows the truth.

2for the truth’s sake which abideth in us, and it shall be with us for ever:

2I love you because of the truth that lives in us and will be with us forever.

3Grace, mercy, peace shall be with us, from God the Father, and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

3Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son, in truth and love.

4I rejoice greatly that I have foundcertainof thy children walking in truth, even as we received commandment from the Father.

4It made me very happy to find some of your children living according to the truth, just as the Father commanded us.

5And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote to thee a new commandment, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

5And now, dear lady, I am asking you that we love one another. This is not a new command I am writing to you, but one we have had from the beginning.

6And this is love, that we should walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, even as ye heard from the beginning, that ye should walk in it.

6Love means living according to God’s commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you live a life of love.

7For many deceivers are gone forth into the world, even they that confess not that Jesus Christ cometh in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.

7Many deceivers have gone out into the world. They do not acknowledge that Jesus Christ came as a real human being. Such a person is a deceiver and the antichrist.

8Look to yourselves, that ye lose not the things which we have wrought, but that ye receive a full reward.

8Watch out for yourselves so that you don't lose what we have worked for, but that you may receive your full reward.

9Whosoever goeth onward and abideth not in the teaching of Christ, hath not God: he that abideth in the teaching, the same hath both the Father and the Son.

9Anyone who wanders away and does not stay with the teaching of Christ does not have God. But anyone who stays with this teaching has both the Father and the Son.

10If any one cometh unto you, and bringeth not this teaching, receive him not into your house, and give him no greeting:

10If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not invite them into your home or even give them a greeting.碎

11for he that giveth him greeting partaketh in his evil works.

11Anyone who gives such a person a greeting shares in their wicked work.

12Having many things to write unto you, I would not write them with paper and ink: but I hope to come unto you, and to speak face to face, that your joy may be made full.

12I have many more things to tell you, but I don't want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to visit you and talk with you face to face, so that our joy may be complete.

13The children of thine elect sister salute thee.

13The children of your chosen sister send you their greetings.
