1For as touching the ministering to the saints, it is superfluous for me to write to you:
1I don’t really need to write to you about this gift for the believers, because I already know how much you want to help.
2for I know your readiness, of which I glory on your behalf to them of Macedonia, that Achaia hath been prepared for a year past; and your zeal hath stirred up very many of them.
2I have been boasting about your readiness to the people in Macedonia, telling them that you in Achaia have been ready to give since last year; your enthusiasm has actually motivated many of them to give as well.
3But I have sent the brethren, that our glorying on your behalf may not be made void in this respect; that, even as I said, ye may be prepared:
3However, I am sending these brothers to you so that my boasting about you won't prove to be empty words; I want you to be fully prepared, just as I said you would be.
4lest by any means, if there come with me any of Macedonia and find you unprepared, we (that we say not, ye) should be put to shame in this confidence.
4If some people from Macedonia come with me and find that you aren't ready, we would be deeply embarrassed for being so confident in you—not to mention how embarrassed you would be.
5I thought it necessary therefore to entreat the brethren, that they would go before unto you, and make up beforehand your aforepromised bounty, that the same might be ready as a matter of bounty, and not of extortion.
5So I thought it was necessary to ask these brothers to visit you ahead of time to help finish world on the generous gift you promised, so it will be ready as a willing gift and not something forced out of you.
6But thisI say, He that soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he that soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.
6Remember this: a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small harvest, but a farmer who plants generously will get a generous harvest.
7Let each man do according as he hath purposed in his heart: not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
7Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or because you feel forced, because God loves a person who gives happily.
8And God is able to make all grace abound unto you; that ye, having always all sufficiency in everything, may abound unto every good work:
8And God is able to provide you with more blessings than you need, so that you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share for every good work.
9as it is written, He hath scattered abroad, he hath given to the poor; His righteousness abideth for ever.
9As the Scriptures say, 'He gives generously to the poor; his acts of kindness and justice last forever.'
10And he that supplieth seed to the sower and bread for food, shall supply and multiply your seed for sowing, and increase the fruits of your righteousness:
10God, who provides seed for the farmer and bread for food, will provide you with a harvest of resources and will make your harvest of generosity grow.
11ye being enriched in everything unto all liberality, which worketh through us thanksgiving to God.
11You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and your generosity will result in people giving thanks to God through us.
12For the ministration of this service not only filleth up the measure of the wants of the saints, but aboundeth also through many thanksgivings unto God;
12This service you are performing not only meets the needs of God's people, but it also overflows in many expressions of thanks to God.
13seeing that through the proving of you by this ministration they glorify God for the obedience of your confession unto the gospel of Christ, and for the liberality of your contribution unto them and unto all;
13Because of the proof of your faith shown in this service, people will praise God for your obedience to the Good News of Christ and for your generous sharing with them and everyone else.
