1Then the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, and made him king in his father’s stead in Jerusalem.
1Then the people of the land took Josiah’s son Jehoahaz and made him king in Jerusalem to succeed his father.
2Joahaz was twenty and three years old when he began to reign; and he reigned three months in Jerusalem.
2Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he ruled in Jerusalem for three months.
3And the king of Egypt deposed him at Jerusalem, and fined the land a hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold.
3The king of Egypt removed him from the throne in Jerusalem and forced the land to pay about 7,500 pounds of silver and 75 pounds of gold as a fine.
4And the king of Egypt made Eliakim his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem, and changed his name to Jehoiakim. And Neco took Joahaz his brother, and carried him to Egypt.
4The king of Egypt then made Eliakim, Jehoahaz’s brother, king over Judah and Jerusalem, and changed Eliakim’s name to Jehoiakim. Neco took Jehoahaz and carried him away to Egypt.
5Jehoiakim was twenty and five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem: and he did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah his God.
5Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he ruled in Jerusalem for eleven years. He did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD his God.
6Against him came up Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and bound him in fetters, to carry him to Babylon.
6King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon attacked him and bound him with bronze chains to take him away to Babylon.
7Nebuchadnezzar also carried of the vessels of the house of Jehovah to Babylon, and put them in his temple at Babylon.
7Nebuchadnezzar also took some of the items from the LORD’s temple to Babylon and put them in his own palace there.
8Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, and his abominations which he did, and that which was found in him, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah: and Jehoiachin his son reigned in his stead.
8The rest of the events of Jehoiakim’s reign, including the detestable things he did and all the charges brought against him, are recorded in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah. His son Jehoiachin became king in his place.
9Jehoiachin was eight years old when he began to reign; and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem: and he did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah.
9Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he became king, and he ruled in Jerusalem for three months and ten days. He did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD.
10And at the return of the year king Nebuchadnezzar sent, and brought him to Babylon, with the goodly vessels of the house of Jehovah, and made Zedekiah his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem.
10In the spring, King Nebuchadnezzar sent for him and brought him to Babylon, along with the valuable items from the LORD’s temple. Nebuchadnezzar then made Jehoiachin’s relative, Zedekiah, king over Judah and Jerusalem.
11Zedekiah was twenty and one years old when he began to reign; and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem:
11Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he ruled in Jerusalem for eleven years.
12and he did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah his God; he humbled not himself before Jeremiah the prophet speaking from the mouth of Jehovah.
12He did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD his God. He did not humble himself before the prophet Jeremiah, who spoke for the LORD.
13And he also rebelled against king Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God: but he stiffened his neck, and hardened his heart against turning unto Jehovah, the God of Israel.
13Zedekiah also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him take an oath of loyalty in God's name. He became stubborn and hard-hearted, refusing to turn to the LORD, the God of Israel.
14Moreover all the chiefs of the priests, and the people, trespassed very greatly after all the abominations of the nations; and they polluted the house of Jehovah which he had hallowed in Jerusalem.
14Furthermore, all the leaders of the priests and the people became more and more unfaithful. They followed the disgusting practices of the surrounding nations and defiled the LORD’s temple, which he had made holy in Jerusalem.
15And Jehovah, the God of their fathers, sent to them by his messengers, rising up early and sending, because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling-place:
15The LORD, the God of their ancestors, repeatedly sent messages to them through his messengers because he had pity on his people and on the place where he lived.
16but they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of Jehovah arose against his people, till there was no remedy.
16But they kept mocking God’s messengers, despising his words, and laughing at his prophets until the LORD’s anger against his people was so great that there was no way to fix it.
17Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Chaldeans, who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion upon young man or virgin, old man or hoary-headed: he gave them all into his hand.
17So God brought the king of the Babylonians against them. The king killed their young men with swords even inside the sanctuary. He had no mercy on young men or young women, the old or the weak; God handed them all over to him.
18And all the vessels of the house of God, great and small, and the treasures of the house of Jehovah, and the treasures of the king, and of his princes, all these he brought to Babylon.
18The king of Babylon took all the items from God’s temple, both large and small, as well as the treasures from the LORD’s temple and the treasures belonging to the king and his officials, and carried everything to Babylon.
19And they burnt the house of God, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem, and burnt all the palaces thereof with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels thereof.
19His army burned down God’s temple and tore down the wall of Jerusalem. They burned all the palaces and destroyed every valuable thing in the city.
20And them that had escaped from the sword carried he away to Babylon; and they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia:
20He took the survivors as captives to Babylon to be slaves for him and his sons until the kingdom of Persia came to power.
21to fulfil the word of Jehovah by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed its sabbaths: for as long as it lay desolate it kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years.
21This fulfilled the message the LORD had spoken through Jeremiah. The land finally enjoyed its Sabbath rests; it lay desolate for seventy years until the time of rest was complete.
22Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of Jehovah by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, Jehovah stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, andput italso in writing, saying,
22In the first year of King Cyrus of Persia, the LORD moved the heart of Cyrus to make an announcement throughout his whole kingdom and put it in writing. This happened so that the LORD’s word spoken through Jeremiah would come true.
23Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth hath Jehovah, the God of heaven, given me; and he hath charged me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whosoever there is among you of all his people, Jehovah his God be with him, and let him go up.
23This is what King Cyrus of Persia says: "The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he has appointed me to build a temple for him at Jerusalem in Judah. Any of you who are his people may go up, and may the LORD their God be with them."
