1And Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his stead, and strengthened himself against Israel.
1And Josaphat his son reigned in his stead, and grew strong against Israel.
1And Jehoshaphat his son became king in his place, and made himself strong against Israel.
2And he placed forces in all the fortified cities of Judah, and set garrisons in the land of Judah, and in the cities of Ephraim that Asa his father had taken.
2And he placed numbers of soldiers in all the fortified cities of Juda. And he put garrisons in the land of Juda, and in the cities of Ephraim, which Asa his father had taken.
2He put forces in all the walled towns of Judah, and responsible chiefs in the land of Judah and in the towns of Ephraim, which Asa his father had taken.
3And Jehovah was with Jehoshaphat, for he walked in the first ways of his father David, and sought not unto the Baals;
3And the Lord was with Josaphat, because he walked in the first ways of David his father: and trusted not in Baalim,
3And the Lord was with Jehoshaphat, because he went in the early ways of his father, not turning to the Baals,
4but he sought theGod of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel.
4But in the God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not according to the sins of Israel.
4But turning to the God of his father and keeping his laws, and not doing as Israel did.
5And Jehovah established the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah gave gifts to Jehoshaphat; and he had riches and honour in abundance.
5And the Lord established the kingdom in his hand, and all Juda brought presents to Josaphat: and he acquired immense riches, and much glory.
5So the Lord made his kingdom strong; and all Judah gave offerings to Jehoshaphat, and he had great wealth and honour.
6And he took courage in the ways of Jehovah; moreover, he removed the high places and Asherahs out of Judah.
6And when his heart had taken courage for the ways of the Lord, he took away also the high places and the groves out of Juda.
6His heart was lifted up in the ways of the Lord; and he went so far as to take away the high places and the wood pillars out of Judah.
7And in the third year of his reign he sent his princes, Ben-hail, and Obadiah, and Zechariah, and Nethaneel, and Micah, to teach in the cities of Judah;
7And in the third year of his reign, he sent of his princes Benhail, and Abdias, and Zacharias, and Nathanael, and Micheas, to teach in the cites of Juda:
7In the third year of his rule he sent Benhail and Obadiah and Zechariah and Nethanel and Micaiah, his captains, as teachers into the towns of Judah;
8and with them the Levites: Shemaiah, and Nethaniah, and Zebadiah, and Asahel, and Shemiramoth, and Jonathan, and Adonijah, and Tobijah, and Tob-Adonijah, Levites; and with them Elishama and Jehoram, the priests.
8And with them the Levites, Semeias, and Nathanias, and Zabadias, and Asael, and Semiramoth, and Jonathan, and Adonias, and Tobias, and Thobadonias Levites, and with them Elisama, and Joram priests.
8And with them, Shemaiah and Nethaniah and Zebadiah and Asahel and Shemiramoth and Jehonathan and Adonijah and Tobijah and Tob-adonijah, the Levites; and Elishama and Jehoram the priests.
9And they taught in Judah, and had the book of the law of Jehovah with them; and they went about through all the cities of Judah, and taught among the people.
9And they taught the people in Juda, having with them the book of the law of the Lord: and they went about all the cities of Juda, and instructed the people.
9And they gave teaching in Judah and had the book of the law of the Lord with them; they went through all the towns of Judah teaching the people.
10And the terror of Jehovah was upon all the kingdoms of the lands that were round about Judah, and they made no war against Jehoshaphat.
10And the fear of the Lord came upon all the kingdoms of the lands that were round about Juda, and they durst not make war against Josaphat.
10And the fear of the Lord was on all the kingdoms of the lands round Judah, so that they made no wars against Jehoshaphat.
11And some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat gifts and tribute-silver. The Arabians also brought him flocks, seven thousand seven hundred rams, and seven thousand seven hundred he-goats.
11The Philistines also brought presents to Josaphat, and tribute in silver, and the Arabians brought him cattle, seven thousand seven hundred rams, and as many he goats.
11And some of the Philistines took offerings to Jehoshaphat, and made him payments of silver; and the Arabians gave him flocks, seven thousand, seven hundred sheep, and seven thousand, seven hundred he-goats.
12And Jehoshaphat waxed exceeding great; and he built in Judah castles and store-cities.
12And Josaphat grew, and became exceeding great: and he built in Juda houses like towers, and walled cities.
12Jehoshaphat became greater and greater, and made strong towers and store-towns in Judah.
13And he had much business in the cities of Judah; and men of war, strong and valiant, in Jerusalem.
13And he prepared many works in the cities of Juda: and he had warriors, and valiant men in Jerusalem.
13He had much property in the towns of Judah; he had forces of armed men, great and strong, in Jerusalem.
14And these are the numbers of them according to their fathers' houses. Of Judah the captains of thousands: Adnah the captain, and with him three hundred thousand mighty men of valour;
14Of whom this is the number of the houses and families of every one: in Juda captains of the army, Ednas the chief, and with him three hundred thousand most valiant men.
14This is the number of them, listed by their families, the captains of thousands of Judah: Adnah, the captain, and with him three hundred thousand men of war;
15and next to him was Johanan the captain, and with him two hundred and eighty thousand;
15After him Johanan the captain, and with him two hundred and eighty thousand.
15Second to him Jehohanan, the captain, and with him two hundred and eighty thousand;
16and next to him, Amasiah the son of Zichri, who willingly offered himself to Jehovah; and with him two hundred thousand mighty men of valour.
16And after him was Amasias the son of Zechri, consecrated to the Lord, and with him were two hundred thousand valiant men.
16After him Amasiah, the son of Zichri, who freely gave himself to the Lord, and with him two hundred thousand men of war;
17And of Benjamin: Eliada, a mighty man of valour, and with him two hundred thousand, armed with bow and shield;
17After him was Eliada valiant in battle, and with him two hundred thousand armed with bow and shield.
17And the captains of Benjamin: Eliada, a great man of war, and with him two hundred thousand armed with bows and body-covers;
18and next to him was Jehozabad, and with him a hundred and eighty thousand ready prepared for war.
18After him also was Jozabad, and with him a hundred and eighty thousand ready for war.
18And after him Jehozabad, and with him a hundred and eighty thousand trained for war.
19These were they that waited on the king, besides those that the king had put in the fortified cities throughout Judah.
19All these were at the hand of the king, beside others, whom he had put in the walled cities, in all Juda.
19These were the men who were waiting on the king, in addition to those placed by the king in the walled towns through all Judah.
