1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Saviour, and Christ Jesus our hope;
1From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus, by the command of God our Savior and Christ Jesus, who is our hope.
2unto Timothy, my true child in faith: Grace, mercy, peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
2To Timothy, my true son in the faith: May grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord be with you.
3As I exhorted thee to tarry at Ephesus, when I was going into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge certain men not to teach a different doctrine,
3I am asking you now, just as I did when I was leaving for Macedonia, to stay in Ephesus so you can order certain people to stop teaching false things.
4neither to give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questionings, rather than a dispensation of God which is in faith; so do I now.
4Tell them not to waste time on myths and never-ending family trees, which only cause useless arguments rather than helping God’s work, which happens through faith.
5But the end of the charge is love out of a pure heart and a good conscience and faith unfeigned:
5The goal of this instruction is love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and sincere faith.
6from which things some having swerved have turned aside unto vain talking;
6Some people have missed the mark on these things and have wandered off into meaningless talk.
7desiring to be teachers of the law, though they understand neither what they say, nor whereof they confidently affirm.
7They want to be teachers of the law, but they don’t even understand what they are saying or the things they insist on so confidently.
8But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully,
8Now we know that the law is good, as long as a person uses it for its intended purpose.
9as knowing this, that law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and unruly, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
9We must remember that laws are not made for people who do what is right, but for those who break the law and rebel. They are for the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and disrespectful, and for those who kill their fathers or mothers or commit any murder.
10for fornicators, for abusers of themselves with men, for menstealers, for liars, for false swearers, and if there be any other thing contrary to the sound doctrine;
10The law is for people who are sexually immoral, for men who practice homosexuality, for kidnappers, for liars, for those who give false testimony, and for anything else that goes against healthy teaching.
11according to the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.
11This teaching is part of the glorious Good News from the blessed God, which was entrusted to me.
12I thank him that enabled me, even Christ Jesus our Lord, for that he counted me faithful, appointing me to his service;
12I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, because he considered me faithful and appointed me to serve him.
13though I was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: howbeit I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief;
13Even though I used to insult God, persecute his people, and act violently, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.
14and the grace of our Lord abounded exceedingly with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
14Our Lord poured out his grace on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are found in Christ Jesus.
15Faithful is the saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief:
15Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves to be completely accepted: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—and I am the worst of them.
16howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me as chief might Jesus Christ show forth all his longsuffering, for an ensample of them that should thereafter believe on him unto eternal life.
16But I was shown mercy for this very reason: so that in me, the worst sinner, Jesus Christ could show his perfect patience as an example for those who would later believe in him and receive eternal life.
17Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
17Now to the King of the ages, the immortal, invisible, and only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
18This charge I commit unto thee, my child Timothy, according to the prophecies which led the way to thee, that by them thou mayest war the good warfare;
18Timothy, my son, I am giving you these instructions based on the prophecies made about you in the past. Use them to fight the good fight.
