1Finally then, brethren, we beseech and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that, as ye received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, even as ye do walk,—that ye abound more and more.
1Finally, brothers and sisters, we urge and encourage you in the name of the Lord Jesus to live in a way that pleases God, just as we taught you and as you are already doing. We ask you to do this even more and more.
2For ye know what charge we gave you through the Lord Jesus.
2For you remember the instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.
3For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye abstain from fornication;
3God’s will is for you to be holy and to stay away from all sexual sin.
4that each one of you know how to possess himself of his own vessel in sanctification and honor,
4Each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable.
5not in the passion of lust, even as the Gentiles who know not God;
5Do not be driven by lustful passions like the people who do not know God.
6that no man transgress, and wrong his brother in the matter: because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as also we forewarned you and testified.
6No one should take advantage of or cheat a Christian brother or sister in this matter. The Lord will punish people for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you solemnly.
7For God called us not for uncleanness, but in sanctification.
7For God did not call us to live impure lives, but to live in holiness.
8Therefore he that rejecteth, rejecteth not man, but God, who giveth his Holy Spirit unto you.
8Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction is not rejecting a human being, but God himself, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.
9But concerning love of the brethren ye have no need that one write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another;
9Regarding love for your fellow believers, we do not need to write to you, because God himself has taught you to love each other.
10for indeed ye do it toward all the brethren that are in all Macedonia. But we exhort you, brethren, that ye abound more and more;
10In fact, you already show this love to all the believers throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers and sisters, to love them even more.
11and that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your hands, even as we charged you;
11Make it your goal to live a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your hands, just as we instructed you.
12that ye may walk becomingly toward them that are without, and may have need of nothing.
12Then your daily life will win the respect of those who are not believers, and you will not have to depend on others for your needs.
13But we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning them that fall asleep; that ye sorrow not, even as the rest, who have no hope.
13Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who have died, so that you do not grieve like people who have no hope.
14For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also that are fallen asleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
14Since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, we also believe that God will bring back with Jesus those who have died believing in him.
15For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we that are alive, that are left unto the coming of the Lord, shall in no wise precede them that are fallen asleep.
15We tell you this directly from the Lord: We who are still living when the Lord returns will definitely not meet him ahead of those who have died.
16For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven, with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first;
16For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the blast of God’s trumpet. First, the believers who have died will rise from their graves.
17then we that are alive, that are left, shall together with them be caught up in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
17Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever.
