1 Kings 22

1And there passed three years without war between Syria and Israel.

1Now for three years there was no war between Aram and Israel.

1And they sit still three years, there is no war between Aram and Israel,

2And in the third year, Josaphat, king of Juda, came down to the king of Israel.

2And it came about in the third year, that Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, came down to the king of Israel.

2and it cometh to pass in the third year, that Jehoshaphat king of Judah cometh down unto the king of Israel,

3(And the king of Israel said to his servants: Know ye not that Ramoth Galaad is ours, and we neglect to take it out of the hand of the king of Syria?)

3And the king of Israel said to his servants, Do you not see that Ramoth-gilead is ours? and we are doing nothing to get it back from the hands of the king of Aram.

3and the king of Israel saith unto his servants, `Have ye not known that ours <FI>is<Fi> Ramoth-Gilead? and we are keeping silent from taking it out of the hand of the king of Aram!'

4And he said to Josaphat: Wilt thou come with me to battle to Ramoth Galaad?

4And he said to Jehoshaphat, Will you go with me to Ramoth-gilead to make war? And Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, I am as you are: my people as your people, my horses as your horses.

4And he saith unto Jehoshaphat, `Dost thou go with me to battle <FI>to<Fi> Ramoth-Gilead?' and Jehoshaphat saith unto the king of Israel, `As I am, so thou; as my people, so thy people; as my horses, so thy horses.'

5And Josaphat said to the king of Israel: As I am, so art thou: my people and thy people are one: and my horsemen are thy horsemen. And Josaphat said to the king of Israel: Inquire, I beseech thee, this day the word of the Lord.

5Then Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, Let us now get directions from the Lord.

5And Jehoshaphat saith unto the king of Israel, `Seek, I pray thee, to-day, the word of Jehovah;'

6Then the king of Israel assembled the prophets, about four hundred men, and he said to them: Shall I go to Ramoth Galaad to fight, or shall I forbear? They answered: Go up, and the Lord will deliver it into the hand of the king.

6So the king of Israel got all the prophets together, about four hundred men, and said to them, Am I to go to Ramoth-gilead to make war or not? And they said, Go up: for the Lord will give it into the hands of the king.

6and the king of Israel gathereth the prophets, about four hundred men, and saith unto them, `Do I go against Ramoth-Gilead to battle, or do I forbear?' and they say, `Go up, and the Lord doth give <FI>it<Fi> into the hand of the king.'

7And Josaphat said: Is there not here some prophet of the Lord, that we may inquire by him?

7But Jehoshaphat said, Is there no other prophet of the Lord here from whom we may get directions?

7And Jehoshaphat saith, `Is there not here a prophet of Jehovah besides, and we seek by him?'

8And the king of Israel said to Josaphat. There is one man left, by whom we may inquire of the Lord; Micheas, the son of Jemla: but I hate him, for he doth not prophecy good to me, but evil. And Josaphat said: Speak not so, O king.

8And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, There is still one man by whom we may get directions from the Lord, Micaiah, son of Imlah; but I have no love for him, for he is a prophet of evil to me and not of good. And Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.

8And the king of Israel saith unto Jehoshaphat, `Yet--one man to seek Jehovah by him, and I have hated him, for he doth not prophesy concerning me good, but evil--Micaiah son of Imlah;' and Jehoshaphat saith, `Let not the king say so.'

9Then the king of Israel called an eunuch, and said to him: Make haste, and bring hither Micheas, the son of Jemla.

9Then the king of Israel sent for one of his unsexed servants and said, Go quickly and come back with Micaiah, the son of Imlah.

9And the king of Israel calleth unto a certain eunuch, and saith, `Hasten Micaiah son of Imlah.'

10And the king of Israel, and Josaphat, king of Juda, sat each on his throne, clothed with royal robes, in a court, by the entrance of the gate of Samaria, and all the prophets prophesied before them.

10Now the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, were seated on their seats of authority, dressed in their robes, by the doorway into Samaria; and all the prophets were acting as prophets before them.

10And the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah are sitting, each on his throne, clothed with garments, in a threshing-floor, at the opening of the gate of Samaria, and all the prophets are prophesying before them.

11And Sedecias, the son of Chanaana, made himself horns of iron, and said: Thus saith the Lord: With these shalt thou push Syria, till thou destroy it.

11And Zedekiah, the son of Chenaanah, made himself horns of iron and said, The Lord says, Pushing back the Aramaeans with these, you will put an end to them completely.

11And Zedekiah son of Chenaanah maketh for himself horns of iron, and saith, `Thus said Jehovah, By these thou dost push the Aramaeans till they are consumed;'

12And all the prophets prophesied in like manner, saying: Go up to Ramoth Galaad, and prosper, for the Lord will deliver it into the king's hands.

12And all the prophets said the same thing, saying, Go up to Ramoth-gilead, and it will go well for you, for the Lord will give it into the hands of the king.

12and all the prophets are prophesying so, saying, `Go up to Ramoth-Gilead, and prosper, and Jehovah hath given <FI>it<Fi> into the hand of the king.'

13And the messenger that went to call Micheas, spoke to him, saying: Behold the words of the prophets with one mouth declare good things to the king: let thy word, therefore, be like to theirs, and speak that which is good.

13Now the servant who had gone to get Micaiah said to him, See now, all the prophets with one voice are saying good things to the king; so let your words be like theirs and say good things.

13And the messenger who hath gone to call Micaiah hath spoken unto him, saying, `Lo, I pray thee, the words of the prophets, with one mouth, <FI>are<Fi> good towards the king; let it be, I pray thee, thy word as the word of one of them--and thou hast spoken good.'

14But Micheas said to him: As the Lord liveth, whatsoever the Lord shall say to me, that will I speak.

14And Micaiah said, By the living Lord, whatever the Lord says to me I will say.

14And Micaiah saith, `Jehovah liveth; surely that which Jehovah saith unto me--it I speak.'

15So he came to the king, and the king said to him: Micheas, shall we go to Ramoth Galaad to battle, or shall we forbear? He answered him: Go up, and prosper, and the Lord shall deliver it into the king's hands.

15When he came to the king, the king said to him, Micaiah, are we to go to Ramoth-gilead to make war or not? And in answer he said, Go up, and it will go well for you; and the Lord will give it into the hands of the king.

15And he cometh in unto the king, and the king saith unto him, `Micaiah, do we go unto Ramoth-Gilead, to battle, or do we forbear?' and he saith unto him, `Go up, and prosper, and Jehovah hath given <FI>it<Fi> into the hand of the king.'

16But the king said to him: I adjure thee again and again, that thou tell me nothing but that which is true, in the name of the Lord.

16Then the king said to him, Have I not, again and again, put you on your oath to say nothing to me but what is true in the name of the Lord?

16And the king saith unto him, `How many times am I adjuring thee that thou speak nothing unto me but truth in the name of Jehovah?'

17And he said: I saw all Israel scattered upon the hills, like sheep that have no shepherd; and the Lord said: These have no master: let every man of them return to his house in peace.

17Then he said, I saw all Israel wandering on the mountains like sheep without a keeper; and the Lord said, These have no master: let them go back, every man to his house in peace.

17And he saith, `I have seen all Israel scattered on the hills as sheep that have no shepherd, and Jehovah saith, These have no master; they turn back each to his house in peace.'

18(Then the king of Israel said to Josaphat: Did I not tell thee, that he prophesieth no good to me, but always evil?)

18And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, Did I not say that he would not be a prophet of good but of evil?

18And the king of Israel saith unto Jehoshaphat, `Have I not said unto thee, He doth not prophesy of me good, but evil?'

19And he added and said: Hear thou, therefore, the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne, and all the army of heaven standing by him on the right hand and on the left:

19And he said, Give ear now to the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord seated on his seat of power, with all the army of heaven in their places round him at his right hand and at his left.

19And he saith, `Therefore, hear a word of Jehovah; I have seen Jehovah sitting on His throne, and all the host of the heavens standing by Him, on His right and on His left;

20And the Lord said: Who shall deceive Achab, king of Israel, that he may go up, and fall at Ramoth Galaad? And one spoke words of this manner, and another otherwise.

20And the Lord said, How may Ahab be tricked into going up to Ramoth-gilead to his death? And one said one thing and one another.

20and Jehovah saith, Who doth entice Ahab, and he doth go up and fall in Ramoth-Gilead? and this one saith thus, and that one is saying thus.

21And there came forth a spirit, and stood before the Lord, and said: I will deceive him. And the Lord said to him: By what means?

21Then a spirit came forward and took his place before the Lord and said, I will get him to do it by a trick.

21`And the spirit goeth out, and standeth before Jehovah, and saith, I--I do entice him; and Jehovah saith unto him, By what?

22And he said: I will go forth, and be a lying spirit, in the mouth of all his prophets. And the Lord said: Thou shalt deceive him, and shalt prevail: go forth, and do so.

22And the Lord said, How? And he said, I will go out and be a spirit of deceit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Your trick will have its effect on him: go out and do so.

22and he saith, I go out, and have been a spirit of falsehood in the mouth of all his prophets; and He saith, Thou dost entice, and also thou art able; go out and do so.

23Now, therefore, behold the Lord hath given a lying spirit in the mouth of all thy prophets that are here, and the Lord hath spoken evil against thee.

23And now, see, the Lord has put a spirit of deceit in the mouth of all these your prophets; and the Lord has said evil against you.

23And now, lo, Jehovah hath put a spirit of falsehood in the mouth of all these thy prophets, and Jehovah hath spoken concerning thee--evil.'

24And Sedecias, the son of Chanaana, came, and struck Micheas on the cheek, and said: Hath then the spirit of the Lord left me, and spoken to thee?

24Then Zedekiah, the son of Chenaanah, came near and gave Micaiah a blow on the side of the face, saying, Where is the spirit of the Lord whose word is in you?

24And Zedekiah son of Chenaanah draweth nigh, and smiteth Micaiah on the cheek, and saith, `Where <FI>is<Fi> this--he hath passed over--the Spirit of Jehovah--from me to speak with thee?'

25And Micheas said: Thou shalt see in the day when thou shalt go into a chamber within a chamber to hide thyself.

25And Micaiah said, Truly, you will see on that day when you go into an inner room to keep yourself safe.

25And Micaiah saith, `Lo, thou art seeing on that day, when thou goest in to the innermost chamber to be hidden.'

26And the king of Israel said: Take Micheas and let him abide with Amon, the governor of the city, and with Joas, the son of Amalech;

26And the king of Israel said, Take Micaiah and send him back to Amon, the ruler of the town, and to Joash, the king's son;

26And the king of Israel saith, `Take Micaiah, and turn him back unto Amon head of the city, and unto Joash son of the king,

27And tell them: Thus saith the king: Put this man in prison, and feed him with bread of affliction, and water of distress till I return in peace.

27And say, It is the king's order that this man is to be put in prison and given prison food till I come again in peace.

27and thou hast said, Thus said the king, Place ye this one in the house of restraint, and cause him to eat bread of oppression, and water of oppression, till my coming in peace.'

28And Micheas said: If thou return in peace, the Lord hath not spoken by me. And he said: Hear, all ye people.

28And Micaiah said, If you come back at all in peace, the Lord has not sent his word by me.

28And Micaiah saith, `If thou at all return in peace--Jehovah hath not spoken by me;' and he saith, `Hear, O peoples, all of them.'

29So the king of Israel, and Josaphat, king of Juda, went up to Ramoth-Galaad.

29So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, went up to Ramoth-gilead.

29And the king of Israel goeth up, and Jehoshaphat king of Judah, to Ramoth-Gilead.

30And the king of Israel said to Josaphat: Take thy armour, and go into the battle, and put on thy own garments. But the king of Israel changed his dress, and went into the battle.

30And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, I will make a change in my clothing, so that I do not seem to be the king, and will go into the fight; but do you put on your robes. So the king of Israel made a change in his dress and went into the fight.

30And the king of Israel saith unto Jehoshaphat to disguise himself, and to go into battle, `And thou, put on thy garments.' And the king of Israel disguiseth himself, and goeth into battle.

31And the king of Syria had commanded the two and thirty captains of the chariots, saying: You shall not fight against any, small or great, but against the king of Israel only.

31Now the king of Aram had given orders to the thirty-two captains of his war-carriages, saying, Make no attack on small or great, but only on the king of Israel.

31And the king of Aram commanded the heads of the charioteers whom he hath--thirty and two--saying, `Ye do not fight with small or with great, but with the king of Israel by himself.'

32So when the captains of the chariots saw Josaphat, they suspected that he was the king of Israel, and making a violent assault, they fought against him: and Josaphat cried out.

32So when the captains of the war-carriages saw Jehoshaphat, they said, Truly, this is the king of Israel; and turning against him, they came round him, but Jehoshaphat gave a cry.

32And it cometh to pass, at the heads of the charioteers seeing Jehoshaphat, that they said, `He <FI>is<Fi> only the king of Israel;' and they turn aside to him to fight, and Jehoshaphat crieth out,

33And the captains of the chariots perceived that he was not the king of Israel, and they turned away from him.

33And when the captains of the war-carriages saw that he was not the king of Israel, they went back from going after him.

33and it cometh to pass, at the heads of the charioteers seeing that he <FI>is<Fi> not the king of Israel, that they turn back from after him.

34And a certain man bent his bow, shooting at a venture, and chanced to strike the king of Israel, between the lungs and the stomach. But he said to the driver of his chariot: Turn thy hand, and carry me out of the army, for I am grievously wounded.

34And a certain man sent an arrow from his bow without thought of its direction, and gave the king of Israel a wound where his breastplate was joined to his clothing; so he said to the driver of his war-carriage, Go to one side and take me away out of the army, for I am badly wounded.

34And a man hath drawn with a bow, in his simplicity, and smiteth the king of Israel between the joinings and the coat of mail, and he saith to his charioteer, `Turn thy hand, and take me out from the camp, for I have become sick.'

35And the battle was fought that day, and the king of Israel stood in his chariot against the Syrians, and he died in the evening: and the blood ran out of the wound into the midst of the chariot.

35But the fight became more violent while the day went on; and the king was supported in his war-carriage facing the Aramaeans, and the floor of the carriage was covered with the blood from his wound, and by evening he was dead.

35And the battle increaseth on that day, and the king hath been caused to stand in the chariot, over-against Aram, and he dieth in the evening, and the blood of the wound runneth out unto the midst of the chariot,

36And the herald proclaimed through all the army, before the sun set, saying: Let every man return to his own city, and to his own country.

36And about sundown a cry went up from all parts of the army, saying, Let every man go back to his town and his country, for the king is dead.

36and he causeth the cry to pass over through the camp, at the going in of the sun, saying, `Each unto his city, and each unto his land.'

37And the king died, and was carried into Samaria: and they buried the king in Samaria.

37And they came to Samaria, and put the king's body to rest in Samaria.

37And the king dieth, and cometh into Samaria, and they bury the king in Samaria;

38And they washed his chariot in the pool of Samaria and the dogs licked up his blood, and they washed the reins according to the word of the Lord which he had spoken.

38And the war-carriage was washed by the pool of Samaria, which was the bathing-place of the loose women, and the dogs were drinking his blood there, as the Lord had said.

38and <FI>one<Fi> rinseth the chariot by the pool of Samaria, and the dogs lick his blood--when the armour they had washed--according to the word of Jehovah that He spake.

39But the rest of the acts of Achab, and all that he did, and the house of ivory that he made, and all the cities that he built, are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel?

39Now the rest of the acts of Ahab, and all he did, and his ivory house, and all the towns of which he was the builder, are they not recorded in the book of the history of the kings of Israel?

39And the rest of the matters of Ahab, and all that he did, and the house of ivory that he built, and all the cities that he built, are they not written on the book of the Chronicles of the kings of Israel?

40So Achab slept with his fathers; and Ochozias, his son, reigned in his stead.

40So Ahab was put to rest with his fathers; and Ahaziah his son became king in his place.

40And Ahab lieth with his fathers, and Ahaziah his son reigneth in his stead.

41But Josaphat, the son of Asa, began to reign over Juda, in the fourth year of Acbab, king of Israel.

41And Jehoshaphat, the son of Asa, became king over Judah in the fourth year of Ahab's rule over Israel.

41And Jehoshaphat son of Asa hath reigned over Judah in the fourth year of Ahab king of Israel,

42He was five and thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned five and twenty years in Jerusalem: the name of his mother was Azuba, the daughter of Salai.

42Jehoshaphat was thirty-five years old when he became king, and he was king for twenty-five years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Azubah, the daughter of Shilhi.

42Jehoshaphat <FI>is<Fi> a son of thirty and five years in his reigning, and twenty and five years he hath reigned in Jerusalem, and the name of his mother <FI>is<Fi> Azubah daughter of Shilhi.

43And he walked in all the way of Asa, his father, and he declined not from it: and he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord.

43He did as Asa his father had done, not turning away from it, but doing what was right in the eyes of the Lord; but the high places were not taken away: the people went on making offerings and burning them in the high places.

43And he walketh in all the way of Asa his father, he hath not turned aside from it, to do that which <FI>is<Fi> right in the eyes of Jehovah; only the high places have not turned aside, yet are the people sacrificing and making perfume in high places.

44Nevertheless, he took not away the high places for as yet the people offered sacrifice, and burnt incense in the high places.

44And Jehoshaphat made peace with the king of Israel.

44And Jehoshaphat maketh peace with the king of Israel;

45And Josaphat had peace with the king of Israel.

45Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, and his great power, and how he went to war, are they not recorded in the book of the history of the kings of Judah?

45and the rest of the matters of Jehoshaphat, and his might that he got, and with which he fought, are they not written on the book of the Chronicles of the kings of Judah?

46But the rest of the acts of Josaphat, and his works which he did, and his battles, are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Juda?

46He put an end to the rest of those who were used for sex purposes in the worship of the gods, all those who were still in the land in the time of his father Asa.

46And the remnant of the whoremongers who were left in the days of Asa his father he took away out of the land;

47And the remnant also of the effeminate, who remained in the days of Asa, his father, he took out of the land.

47At that time there was no king in Edom;

47and there is no king in Edom; he set up a king.

48And there was then no king appointed in Edom.

48And the representative of King Jehoshaphat made a Tarshish-ship to go to Ophir for gold, but it did not go, because it was broken at Ezion-geber.

48Jehoshaphat made ships at Tarshish to go to Ophir for gold, and they went not, for the ships were broken in Ezion-Geber.

49But king Josaphat made navies on the sea, to sail into Ophir for gold: but they could not go, for the ships were broken in Asiongaber.

49Then Ahaziah, the son of Ahab, said to Jehoshaphat, Let my men go with yours in the ships. But Jehoshaphat would not let them.

49Then said Ahaziah son of Ahab unto Jehoshaphat, `Let my servants go with thy servants in the ships;' and Jehoshaphat was not willing.

50Then Ochozias, the son of Achab, said to Josaphat: Let my servants go with thy servants in the ships. And Josaphat would not.

50Then Jehoshaphat went to rest with his fathers, and his body was put into the earth in the town of David his father; and Jehoram his son became king in his place.

50And Jehoshaphat lieth with his fathers, and is buried with his fathers in the city of David his father, and Jehoram his son reigneth in his stead.

51And Josaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with them in the city of David, his father: and Joram, his son, reigned in his stead.

51Ahaziah, the son of Ahab, became king over Israel in Samaria in the seventeenth year of the rule of Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, and he was king over Israel for two years.

51Ahaziah son of Ahab hath reigned over Israel in Samaria in the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigneth over Israel two years,

52And Ochozias, the son of Achab, began to reign over Israel, in Samaria, in the seventeenth year of Josaphat, king of Juda, and he reigned over Israel two years.

52He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, going in the ways of his father and his mother, and in the ways of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, who made Israel do evil.

52and doth the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, and walketh in the way of his father, and in the way of his mother, and in the way of Jeroboam son of Nebat who caused Israel to sin,

53And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the way of his father and his mother, and in the way of Jeroboam, the son of Nabat, who made Israel to sin.

53He was a servant and worshipper of Baal, moving the Lord, the God of Israel, to wrath, as his father had done.

53and serveth the Baal, and boweth himself to it, and provoketh Jehovah, God of Israel, according to all that his father had done.

54He served also Baal, and worshipped him, and provoked the Lord, the God of Israel, according to all that his father had done.
