1And I, brethren, when I came unto you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God.
1Brothers and sisters, when I came to you, I didn’t use fancy words or human wisdom to tell you the truth about God.
2For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
2I decided that while I was with you, I would forget about everything except Jesus Christ and his death on the cross.
3And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.
3I came to you in weakness, feeling nervous and shaking with fear.
4And my speech and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:
4My message and my preaching didn't use clever words to persuade people; instead, they were a clear demonstration of the Spirit’s power.
5that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
5I did this so that your faith wouldn't be based on human wisdom, but on God’s power.
6We speak wisdom, however, among them that are fullgrown: yet a wisdom not of this world, nor of the rulers of this world, who are coming to nought:
6Now, we do speak wisdom to those who are mature, but it isn’t the wisdom of this world or of the leaders of this world, who are all losing their power.
7but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, even the wisdom that hath been hidden, which God foreordained before the worlds unto our glory:
7Instead, we speak of God’s secret wisdom—the wisdom that was hidden, which God chose for our glory before the world even began.
8which none of the rulers of this world hath known: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory:
8None of the rulers of this age understood it. If they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
9but as it is written, Things which eye saw not, and ear heard not, Andwhichentered not into the heart of man, Whatsoever things God prepared for them that love him.
9But it is just as the Scriptures say: 'No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.'
10But unto us God revealed them through the Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
10But God has revealed these things to us through his Spirit. The Spirit explores everything, even the deepest secrets of God.
11For who among men knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of the man, which is in him? even so the things of God none knoweth, save the Spirit of God.
11No one knows a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit within them. In the same way, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
12But we received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is from God; that we might know the things that were freely given to us of God.
12And we have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who comes from God, so that we can understand the wonderful things God has freely given to us.
13Which things also we speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Spirit teacheth; combining spiritual things with spiritual words.
13We don't talk about these things using words taught by human wisdom. Instead, we use words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.
14Now the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him; and he cannot know them, because they are spiritually judged.
14People who aren't spiritual don't accept the things that come from the Spirit of God. To them, these things are foolish. They can't understand them because those things can only be understood through the Spirit.
