What 1 Corinthians 11:22 means

Paul confronts them: they have houses to eat and drink in, but the assembly is not the place for private indulgence. By acting as they have, they despise the church of God and shame those who have nothing. He withholds all praise. The Lord’s Supper is holy; it is not a venue for flaunting status. When the poor are humiliated at Christ’s table, the church denies the very grace it claims to celebrate. Paul’s rebuke demands repentance. Ordinary hunger is to be met at home; the gathered meal must honor Christ and His body without partiality or contempt.

Context

This verse completes Paul’s initial rebuke by contrasting appropriate private eating with the sacred assembly. The severe tone paves the way for positive instruction. In verses 23–25, Paul will recall what he “received of the Lord” about the Supper’s institution, moving from their misuse to Christ’s meaning. That remembrance will ground the following assertion (verse 26) that the Supper proclaims the Lord’s death and will transition to warnings against unworthy participation (verses 27–34).

v.21for in your eating each one taketh before other his own supper; and one is hungry, and another is drunken.

v.22This passage

v.23For I received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which he was betrayed took bread;
