1For I would not, brethren, have you ignorant, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;
1For I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud: and all passed through the sea.
1For I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;
2and were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
2And all in Moses were baptized, in the cloud and in the sea:
2and all were baptised unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
3and did all eat the same spiritual food;
3And did all eat the same spiritual food:
3and all ate the same spiritual food,
4and did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of a spiritual rock that followed them: and the rock was Christ.
4And all drank the same spiritual drink: (And they drank of the spiritual rock that followed them: and the rock was Christ.)
4and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank of a spiritual rock which followed [them]: (now the rock was the Christ;)
5Howbeit with most of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
5But with most of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the desert.
5yetGod was not pleased with the most of them, for they were strewed in the desert.
6Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.
6Now these things were done in a figure of us, that we should not covet evil things, as they also coveted.
6But these things happened [as] types of us, that we should not be lusters after evil things, as they also lusted.
7Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
7Neither become ye idolaters, as some of them, as it is written: The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.
7Neither be ye idolaters, as some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.
8Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.
8Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them that committed fornication: and there fell in one day three and twenty thousand.
8Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed fornication, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.
9Neither let us make trial of the Lord, as some of them made trial, and perished by the serpents.
9Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them tempted and perished by the serpent.
9Neither let us tempt the Christ, as some of them tempted, and perished by serpents.
10Neither murmur ye, as some of them murmured, and perished by the destroyer.
10Neither do you murmur, as some of them murmured and were destroyed by the destroyer.
10Neither murmur ye, as some of them murmured, and perished by the destroyer.
11Now these things happened unto them by way of example; and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.
11Now all these things happened to them in figure: and they are written for our correction, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
11Now all these things happened to them [as] types, and have been written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.
12Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
12Wherefore, he that thinketh himself to stand, let him take heed lest he fall.
12So that let him that thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.
13There hath no temptation taken you but such as man can bear: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation make also the way of escape, that ye may be able to endure it.
13Let no temptation take hold on you, but such as is human. And God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that which you are able: but will make also with temptation issue, that you may be able to bear it.
13No temptation has taken you but such as is according to man's nature; andGod is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above what ye are able [to bear], but will with the temptation make the issue also, so that [ye] should be able to bear [it].
14Wherefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
14Wherefore, my dearly beloved, fly from the service of idols.
14Wherefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
15I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.
15I speak as to wise men: judge ye yourselves what I say.
15I speak as to intelligent [persons]: do ye judge what I say.
16The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a communion of the body of Christ?
16The chalice of benediction which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? And the bread which we break, is it not the partaking of the body of the Lord?
16The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not [the] communion of the blood of the Christ? The bread which we break, is it not [the] communion of the body of the Christ?
17seeing that we, who are many, are one bread, one body: for we all partake of the one bread.
17For we, being many, are one bread, one body: all that partake of one bread.
17Because we, [being] many, are one loaf, one body; for we all partake of that one loaf.
18Behold Israel after the flesh: have not they that eat the sacrifices communion with the altar?
18Behold Israel according to the flesh. Are not they that eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?
18See Israel according to flesh: are not they who eat the sacrifices in communion with the altar?
19What say I then? that a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?
19What then? Do I say that what is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing? Or that the idol is any thing?
19What then do I say? that what is sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything?
20But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have communion with demons.
20But the things which the heathens sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils and not to God. And I would not that you should be made partakers with devils.
20But that what [the nations] sacrifice they sacrifice to demons, and not toGod. Now I do not wish you to be in communion with demons.
21Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of demons: ye cannot partake of the table of the Lord, and of the table of demons.
21You cannot drink the chalice of the Lord and the chalice of devils: you cannot be partakers of the table of the Lord and of the table of devils.
21Ye cannot drink [the] Lord's cup, and [the] cup of demons: ye cannot partake of [the] Lord's table, and of [the] table of demons.
22Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?
22Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he? All things are lawful for me: but all things are not expedient.
22Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?
23All things are lawful; but not all things are expedient. All things are lawful; but not all things edify.
23All things are lawful for me: but all things do not edify.
23All things are lawful, but all are not profitable; all things are lawful, but all do not edify.
24Let no man seek his own, but each his neighbor’s good.
24Let no man seek his own, but that which is another's.
24Let no one seek his own [advantage], but that of the other.
25Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, eat, asking no question for conscience’ sake;
25Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, eat: asking no question for conscience' sake.
25Everything sold in the shambles eat, making no inquiry for conscience sake.
26for the earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof.
26The earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof.
26For the earth [is] the Lord's and its fulness.
27If one of them that believe not biddeth you to a feast, and ye are disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience’ sake.
27If any of them that believe not, invite you, and you be willing to go: eat of any thing that is set before you, asking no question for conscience' sake.
27But if any one of the unbelievers invite you, and ye are minded to go, all that is set before you eat, making no inquiry for conscience sake.
28But if any man say unto you, This hath been offered in sacrifice, eat not, for his sake that showed it, and for conscience’ sake:
28But if any man say: This has been sacrificed to idols: do not eat of it, for his sake that told it and for conscience' sake.
28But if any one say to you, This is offered to holy purposes, do not eat, for his sake that pointed it out, and conscience sake;
29conscience, I say, not thine own, but the other’s; for why is my liberty judged by another conscience?
29Conscience I say, not thy own, but the other's. For why is my liberty judged by another man's conscience?
29but conscience, I mean, not thine own, but that of the other: for why is my liberty judged by another conscience?
30If I partake with thankfulness, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?
30If I partake with thanksgiving, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?
30If I partake with thanksgiving, why am I spoken evil of for what I give thanks for?
31Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
31Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatsoever else you do, do all to the glory of God.
31Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatever ye do, do all things toGod's glory.
32Give no occasion of stumbling, either to Jews, or to Greeks, or to the church of God:
32Be without offence to the Jew, and to the Gentiles and to the church of God:
32Give no occasion to stumbling, whether to Jews, or Greeks, or the assembly ofGod.
33even as I also please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of the many, that they may be saved.
33As I also in all things please all men, not seeking that which is profitable to myself but to many: that they may be saved.
33Even as I also please all in all things; not seeking my own profit, but that of the many, that they may be saved.
