1These were the groups for the gatekeepers: From the Korahites, there was Meshelemiah son of Kore, who was a descendant of Asaph.

2And Meshelemiah had sons: Zechariah the first-born, Jediael the second, Zebadiah the third, Jathniel the fourth,

2Meshelemiah’s sons were: Zechariah the firstborn, Jediael the second, Zebadiah the third, Jathniel the fourth,

3Elam the fifth, Jehohanan the sixth, Eliehoenai the seventh.

3Elam the fifth, Jehohanan the sixth, and Eliehoenai the seventh.

4And Obed-edom had sons: Shemaiah the first-born, Jehozabad the second, Joah the third, and Sacar the fourth, and Nethanel the fifth,

4Obed-Edom also had sons: Shemaiah the firstborn, Jehozabad the second, Joah the third, Sacar the fourth, and Nethanel the fifth,

5Ammiel the sixth, Issachar the seventh, Peullethai the eighth; for God blessed him.

5Ammiel the sixth, Issachar the seventh, and Peullethai the eighth; for God had blessed Obed-Edom.

6Also unto Shemaiah his son were sons born, that ruled over the house of their father; for they were mighty men of valor.

6Shemaiah, the son of Obed-Edom, had sons who were leaders in their families because they were very capable and brave men.

7The sons of Shemaiah: Othni, and Rephael, and Obed, Elzabad, whose brethren were valiant men, Elihu, and Semachiah.

7The sons of Shemaiah were Othni, Rephael, Obed, and Elzabad; their relatives Elihu and Semachiah were also very capable men.

8All these were of the sons of Obed-edom: they and their sons and their brethren, able men in strength for the service; threescore and two of Obed-edom.

8All these were descendants of Obed-Edom. They, their sons, and their relatives were strong and capable men for the work; there were sixty-two in all from Obed-Edom.

9And Meshelemiah had sons and brethren, valiant men, eighteen.

9Meshelemiah had eighteen sons and relatives who were capable men.

10Also Hosah, of the children of Merari, had sons: Shimri the chief (for though he was not the first-born, yet his father made him chief),

10Hosah, from the Merari clan, had sons: Shimri was the leader (though he was not the firstborn, his father appointed him leader),

11Hilkiah the second, Tebaliah the third, Zechariah the fourth: all the sons and brethren of Hosah were thirteen.

11Hilkiah the second, Tebaliah the third, and Zechariah the fourth. There were thirteen sons and relatives of Hosah in all.

12Of these were the courses of the doorkeepers, even of the chief men, having offices like their brethren, to minister in the house of Jehovah.

12These groups of gatekeepers, through their leaders, were given duties for serving in the Lord’s temple, just like their relatives.

13And they cast lots, as well the small as the great, according to their fathers’ houses, for every gate.

13They threw lots to assign each gate, treating everyone the same, whether they were from a small family or a large one, and young or old.

14And the lot eastward fell to Shelemiah. Then for Zechariah his son, a discreet counsellor, they cast lots; and his lot came out northward.

14The lot for the East Gate fell to Shelemiah. Then they threw lots for his son Zechariah, a wise counselor, and he was assigned the North Gate.

15To Obed-edom southward; and to his sons the store-house.

15The lot for the South Gate fell to Obed-Edom, and his sons were assigned to guard the storehouses.

16To Shuppim and Hosah westward, by the gate of Shallecheth, at the causeway that goeth up, watch against watch.

16The lots for the West Gate and the Shallecheth Gate on the upper road fell to Shuppim and Hosah. One guard group stood next to the other.

17Eastward were six Levites, northward four a day, southward four a day, and for the store-house two and two.

17There were six Levites assigned to the East each day, four each day to the North, four each day to the South, and two at a time for each storehouse.

18For Parbar westward, four at the causeway, and two at Parbar.

18As for the court on the west side, there were four assigned to the road and two at the court itself.

19These were the courses of the doorkeepers; of the sons of the Korahites, and of the sons of Merari.

19These were the groups of gatekeepers from the clans of Korah and Merari.

20And of the Levites, Ahijah was over the treasures of the house of God, and over the treasures of the dedicated things.

20From the other Levites, Ahijah was in charge of the treasuries in the house of God and the treasuries for the dedicated gifts.

21The sons of Ladan, the sons of the Gershonites belonging to Ladan, the heads of the fathers’ houses belonging to Ladan the Gershonite: Jehieli.

21The descendants of Ladan, who were Gershonites through Ladan’s family line, included Jehieli, a family leader.

22The sons of Jehieli: Zetham, and Joel his brother, over the treasures of the house of Jehovah.

22The sons of Jehieli, Zetham and his brother Joel, were in charge of the treasuries of the Lord’s temple.

23Of the Amramites, of the Izharites, of the Hebronites, of the Uzzielites:

23This also included groups from the Amramites, Izharites, Hebronites, and Uzzielites.

24and Shebuel the son of Gershom, the son of Moses, was ruler over the treasures.

24Shebuel, a descendant of Gershom, who was the son of Moses, was the chief official in charge of the treasuries.

25And his brethren: of Eliezer came Rehabiah his son, and Jeshaiah his son, and Joram his son, and Zichri his son, and Shelomoth his son.

25His relatives through Eliezer were: Eliezer’s son Rehabiah, his son Jeshaiah, his son Joram, his son Zichri, and his son Shelomoth.

26This Shelomoth and his brethren were over all the treasures of the dedicated things, which David the king, and the heads of the fathers’ houses, the captains over thousands and hundreds, and the captains of the host, had dedicated.

26Shelomoth and his relatives were in charge of all the treasuries for the gifts that King David, the family leaders, the commanders of thousands and hundreds, and the army officers had dedicated.

27Out of the spoil won in battles did they dedicate to repair the house of Jehovah.

27They had dedicated some of the loot taken in battles to be used for the repair and upkeep of the Lord’s house.

28And all that Samuel the seer, and Saul the son of Kish, and Abner the son of Ner, and Joab the son of Zeruiah, had dedicated, whosoever had dedicated anything, it was under the hand of Shelomoth, and of his brethren.

28Shelomoth and his relatives were in charge of everything dedicated by Samuel the seer, Saul son of Kish, Abner son of Ner, and Joab son of Zeruiah—basically everything anyone had dedicated to God.

29Of the Izharites, Chenaniah and his sons were for the outward business over Israel, for officers and judges.

29From the Izharites, Chenaniah and his sons were assigned duties outside the temple as officers and judges across Israel.

30From the Hebronites, Hashabiah and his relatives, one thousand seven hundred capable men, were in charge of Israel west of the Jordan River. They handled all the Lord’s work and the king’s business.

31Of the Hebronites was Jerijah the chief, even of the Hebronites, according to their generations by fathers’ houses. In the fortieth year of the reign of David they were sought for, and there were found among them mighty men of valor at Jazer of Gilead.

31Jerijah was the leader of the Hebronites according to their family records. In the fortieth year of David’s reign, a search was made in their records, and outstanding men were found among them at Jazer in Gilead.

32And his brethren, men of valor, were two thousand and seven hundred, heads of fathers’ houses, whom king David made overseers over the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half-tribe of the Manassites, for every matter pertaining to God, and for the affairs of the king.

32King David appointed Jerijah’s relatives—two thousand seven hundred capable men who were family leaders—as overseers for the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. They were responsible for all matters related to God and the affairs of the king.
