1And it came to pass, at the time of the return of the year, at the time when kings go outto battle, that Joab led forth the army, and wasted the country of the children of Ammon, and came and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried at Jerusalem. And Joab smote Rabbah, and overthrew it.
1In the spring, the time of year when kings usually go out to war, Joab led the army out and destroyed the land belonging to the Ammonites. He went to the city of Rabbah and surrounded it, while David stayed behind in Jerusalem. Joab attacked Rabbah and leveled it.
2And David took the crown of their king from off his head, and found it to weigh a talent of gold, and there were precious stones in it; and it was set upon David’s head: and he brought forth the spoil of the city, exceeding much.
2David took the crown from the head of the Ammonite king. It was made of gold, weighed about seventy-five pounds, and was set with precious gems. They placed it on David’s head. He also took a huge amount of valuable goods from the city.
3And he brought forth the people that were therein, and cut them with saws, and with harrows of iron, and with axes. And thus did David unto all the cities of the children of Ammon. And David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.
3He brought out the people who were there and put them to work using saws, iron picks, and axes. David did this to all the Ammonite towns. Then David and his entire army returned to Jerusalem.
4And it came to pass after this, that there arose war at Gezer with the Philistines: then Sibbecai the Hushathite slew Sippai, of the sons of the giant; and they were subdued.
4Later on, a war broke out with the Philistines at Gezer. During the battle, Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Sippai, who was a descendant of the giants, and the Philistines were defeated.
5And there was again war with the Philistines; and Elhanan the son of Jair slew Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.
5In another war with the Philistines, Elhanan son of Jair killed Lahmi, the brother of Goliath the Gittite. The wooden shaft of Lahmi’s spear was as thick as a weaver’s rod.
6And there was again war at Gath, where was a man of great stature, whose fingers and toes were four and twenty, six on each hand, and six on each foot; and he also was born unto the giant.
6There was another battle at Gath. A very tall man was there who had twenty-four fingers and toes—six on each hand and six on each foot. He was also a descendant of the giants.
