1And it came to pass, when David dwelt in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, Lo, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of Jehovah dwelleth under curtains.
1Once David was settled in his palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, 'Look, I am living in a house made of cedar, but the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord is kept under a tent.'
2And Nathan said unto David, Do all that is in thy heart; for God is with thee.
2Nathan replied to David, 'Do whatever you have in mind, because God is with you.'
3And it came to pass the same night, that the word of God came to Nathan, saying,
3But that same night, the word of God came to Nathan, saying:
4Go and tell David my servant, Thus saith Jehovah, Thou shalt not build me a house to dwell in:
4'Go and tell my servant David: This is what the Lord says: You are not the one to build me a house to live in.'
5for I have not dwelt in a house since the day that I brought up Israel, unto this day, but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle to another.
5'I have not lived in a house from the day I brought Israel out of Egypt until today. Instead, I have moved from one tent site to another, and from one dwelling place to another.'
6In all places wherein I have walked with all Israel, spake I a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people, saying, Why have ye not built me a house of cedar?
6'Everywhere I moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their leaders whom I commanded to shepherd my people: Why haven't you built me a house of cedar?'
7Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be prince over my people Israel:
7'Now then, tell my servant David: This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be the leader over my people Israel.'
8and I have been with thee whithersoever thou hast gone, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee; and I will make thee a name, like unto the name of the great ones that are in the earth.
8'I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have destroyed all your enemies before you. Now I will make your name famous, like the names of the greatest people on earth.'
9And I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness waste them any more, as at the first,
9'I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Evil people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning'
10and as from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel; and I will subdue all thine enemies. Moreover I tell thee that Jehovah will build thee a house.
10'and ever since I appointed judges over my people Israel. I will also defeat all your enemies. Furthermore, I declare to you that the Lord himself will build a house for you.'
11And it shall come to pass, when thy days are fulfilled that thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will set up thy seed after thee, who shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom.
11'When your time is up and you go to be with your ancestors, I will raise up one of your descendants, one of your own sons, to succeed you, and I will make his kingdom secure.'
12He shall build me a house, and I will establish his throne for ever.
12'He is the one who will build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever.'
13I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my lovingkindness away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee;
13'I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will never take my love away from him, as I took it away from the one who ruled before you.'
14but I will settle him in my house and in my kingdom for ever; and his throne shall be established for ever.
14'I will set him over my house and my kingdom forever; his throne will be established for all time.'
15According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.
15Nathan told David everything that the Lord had said to him in this vision.
16Then David the king went in, and sat before Jehovah; and he said, Who am I, O Jehovah God, and what is my house, that thou hast brought me thus far?
16Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and said, 'Who am I, Lord God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?'
17And this was a small thing in thine eyes, O God; but thou hast spoken of thy servant’s house for a great while to come, and hast regarded me according to the estate of a man of high degree, O Jehovah God.
17'As if this were not enough in your eyes, O God, you have spoken about the future of my family for a long time to come. You have looked on me as a man of high rank, Lord God.'
18What can David say yet more unto thee concerning the honor which is done to thy servant? for thou knowest thy servant.
18'What more can David say to you for honoring your servant? For you know your servant well.'
19O Jehovah, for thy servant’s sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou wrought all this greatness, to make known all these great things.
19'Lord, for the sake of your servant and according to your own will, you have done all these great things and made all these great promises known.'
20O Jehovah, there is none like thee, neither is there any God besides thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
20'There is no one like you, Lord, and there is no God except you, according to everything we have heard with our own ears.'
21And what one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel, whom God went to redeem unto himself for a people, to make thee a name by great and terrible things, in driving out nations from before thy people, whom thou redeemedst out of Egypt?
21'And who is like your people Israel? They are the one nation on earth that God went out to rescue for himself as a people. You made a name for yourself by doing great and awesome things, driving out nations before your people, whom you rescued from Egypt.'
22For thy people Israel didst thou make thine own people for ever; and thou, Jehovah, becamest their God.
22'You made your people Israel your very own forever, and you, Lord, became their God.'
23And now, O Jehovah, let the word that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant, and concerning his house, be established for ever, and do as thou hast spoken.
23'And now, Lord, let the promise you made concerning your servant and his family be established forever. Do exactly as you said.'
24And let thy name be established and magnified for ever, saying, Jehovah of hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel: and the house of David thy servant is established before thee.
24'Then your name will be established and honored forever, so that people will say, "The Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God over Israel, is Israel’s God!" And the house of your servant David will be established before you.'
25For thou, O my God, hast revealed to thy servant that thou wilt build him a house: therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray before thee.
25'You, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him. That is why your servant has found the courage to pray to you.'
26And now, O Jehovah, thou art God, and hast promised this good thing unto thy servant:
26'Now, Lord, you are God! You have promised these good things to your servant.'
27and now it hath pleased thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee: for thou, O Jehovah, hast blessed, and it is blessed for ever.
27'You have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, so that it may continue forever in your presence; for you, Lord, have blessed it, and it will be blessed forever.'
