1And David consulted with the captains of thousands and hundreds, with every prince.
1Then David had discussions with the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds and with every chief.
2And David said to all the congregation of Israel, If it seem good to you, and it be of Jehovah ourGod, let us send abroad to our brethren everywhere, that are left in all the lands of Israel, and with them to the priests and Levites in their cities and suburbs, that they may gather themselves to us;
2And David said to all the men of Israel who had come together there, If it seems good to you and if it is the purpose of the Lord our God, let us send to all the rest of our brothers, everywhere in the land of Israel, and to the priests and the Levites in their towns and the country round them, and get them to come together here to us;
3and let us bring again the ark of ourGod to us; for we inquired not of it in the days of Saul.
3And let us get back for ourselves the ark of our God: for in the days of Saul we did not go to it for directions.
4And all the congregation said that they should do so; for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.
4And all the people said they would do so, for it seemed right to them.
5And David assembled all Israel from the Shihor of Egypt unto the entrance of Hamath, to bring the ark ofGod from Kirjath-jearim.
5So David sent for all Israel to come together, from Shihor, the river of Egypt, as far as the way into Hamath, to get the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim.
6And David went up, and all Israel, to Baalah, to Kirjath-jearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up from thence the ark ofGod, of Jehovah, who sitteth between the cherubim, whose name is placed [there].
6And David went up, with all Israel, to Baalah, that is, to Kiriath-jearim in Judah, to get up from there the ark of God, over which the holy Name is named, the name of the Lord whose place is between the winged ones.
7And they carried the ark ofGod on a new cart out of the house of Abinadab; and Uzza and Ahio drove the cart.
7And they put the ark of God on a new cart, and took it out of the house of Abinadab; and Uzza and Ahio were the drivers of the cart.
8And David and all Israel played beforeGod with all their might, and with singing, and with harps, and with lutes, and with tambours, and with cymbals, and with trumpets.
8Then David and all Israel made melody before God with all their strength, with songs and corded instruments of music, and with brass instruments and horns.
9And when they came to the threshing-floor of Chidon, Uzza put forth his hand to hold the ark; for the oxen had stumbled.
9And when they came to the grain-floor of Chidon, Uzza put out his hand to keep the ark in its place, for the oxen were slipping.
10And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Uzza, and he smote him, because he had put forth his hand to the ark; and there he died beforeGod.
10And the wrath of the Lord, burning against Uzza, sent destruction on him because he had put his hand on the ark, and death came to him there before God.
11And David was indignant; for Jehovah had made a breach upon Uzza; and he called that place Perez-Uzza to this day.
11And David was angry because of the Lord's outburst of wrath against Uzza, and he gave that place the name Perez-uzza, to this day.
12And David was afraid ofGod that day, saying, How shall I bring the ark ofGod to me?
12And so great was David's fear of God that day, that he said, How may I let the ark of God come to me?
