Romans 8

1There is therefore now no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus.

1So now, there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.

2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus made me free from the law of sin and of death.

2Because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death.

3For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God, sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

3The law was powerless because it was weakened by our human nature. But God did what the law could not do: He sent his own Son in a body like our sinful bodies to be an offering for sin, and he judged sin while it was in that human body.

4that the ordinance of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

4He did this so that the righteous requirement of the law could be fully met in us, who no longer live according to our sinful nature but according to the Spirit.

5For they that are after the flesh mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

5People who live according to their sinful nature think about what that nature wants. But people who live according to the Spirit think about what the Spirit wants.

6For the mind of the flesh is death; but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace:

6Letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.

7because the mind of the flesh is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can it be:

7The mind controlled by the sinful nature is an enemy of God. it does not obey God’s law, and in fact, it cannot.

8and they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

8That is why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature cannot please God.

9But ye are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you. But if any man hath not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

9But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to him at all.

10And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the spirit is life because of righteousness.

10Even though your body will die because of sin, if Christ is in you, your spirit is alive because you have been made right with God.

11But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwelleth in you, he that raised up Christ Jesus from the dead shall give life also to your mortal bodies through his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

11The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.

12So then, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh:

12Therefore, my brothers and sisters, we have an obligation, but it is not to our sinful nature to live the way it wants us to.

13for if ye live after the flesh, ye must die; but if by the Spirit ye put to death the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

13If you live according to your sinful nature, you will die. But if by the power of the Spirit you put to death the bad things your body does, you will live.

14For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

14For everyone who is led by the Spirit of God is a child of God.

15For ye received not the spirit of bondage again unto fear; but ye received the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

15You did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave to fear again. Instead, you received the Spirit of adoption as God's own children. Now we call out to him, 'Abba, Father.'

16The Spirit himself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are children of God:

16The Spirit himself joins with our spirit to confirm that we are God’s children.

17and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified with him.

17Since we are his children, we are his heirs. We are heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ. If we share in his sufferings, we will also share in his glory.

18For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed to us-ward.

18I am sure that what we suffer now cannot even be compared to the glory that will be shown to us later.

19For the earnest expectation of the creation waiteth for the revealing of the sons of God.

19All of creation is waiting with deep longing for the day when God reveals who his children really are.

20For the creation was subjected to vanity, not of its own will, but by reason of him who subjected it, in hope

20The creation was condemned to feel useless, not because it wanted to be, but because God chose to subject it to that—yet there was always hope.

21that the creation itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the liberty of the glory of the children of God.

21The hope is that creation itself will be set free from its slavery to decay and will share in the glorious freedom of the children of God.

22For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.

22We know that the whole creation has been groaning together as if in the pains of childbirth right up to this present time.

23And not only so, but ourselves also, who have the first-fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for our adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

23And we believers also groan, even though we have the Spirit as a taste of what is to come. We wait eagerly for the time when God will give us our full rights as his children, including the redemption of our bodies.

24For in hope were we saved: but hope that is seen is not hope: for who hopeth for that which he seeth?

24We were saved with this hope in mind. If we already see what we are hoping for, it isn't really hope. Who hopes for what they already have?

25But if we hope for that which we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.

25But if we hope for something we don't have yet, we wait for it with patience.

26And in like manner the Spirit also helpeth our infirmity: for we know not how to pray as we ought; but the Spirit himself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered;

26In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We don’t know how we should pray, but the Spirit himself speaks to God for us with groans that words cannot express.

27and he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

27And God, who searches our hearts, knows what the Spirit is thinking. This is because the Spirit pleads for God's people in harmony with God’s own will.

28And we know that to them that love God all things work together for good, even to them that are called according to his purpose.

28We know that God makes everything work together for the good of those who love him and are called according to his purpose for them.

29For whom he foreknew, he also foreordained to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren:

29God knew his people in advance, and he decided ahead of time that they would become like his Son. This way, his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.

30and whom he foreordained, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

30And those he decided on ahead of time, he also called. Those he called, he also made right with himself. And those he made right with himself, he also gave his glory.

31What then shall we say to these things? If Godisfor us, whoisagainst us?

31What should we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us?

32He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not also with him freely give us all things?

32Since God did not even spare his own Son but gave him up for all of us, won’t he also give us everything else along with him?

33Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth;

33Who dares to accuse the people God has chosen? No one, because God himself has made us right with him.碎

34who is he that condemneth? It is Christ Jesus that died, yea rather, that was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

34Who then will condemn us? No one. Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting at the place of highest honor next to God, pleading for us.

35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

35Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death?碎

36Even as it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; We were accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

36As the Scriptures say, 'For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered like sheep to be slaughtered.'

37Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

37No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.

38For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,

38For I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.

39nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

39No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
