1For, behold, the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, doth take away from Jerusalem and from Judah stay and staff, the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water;
1Look! The Lord, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, is about to take away everything that Jerusalem and Judah depend on. He will take away their entire supply of food and all their water.
2the mighty man, and the man of war; the judge, and the prophet, and the diviner, and the elder;
2He will remove the heroes and the soldiers, the judges and the prophets, the fortune-tellers and the elders.
3the captain of fifty, and the honorable man, and the counsellor, and the expert artificer, and the skilful enchanter.
3He will take away the military officers, the high-ranking officials, the advisors, the skilled craftsmen, and the clever magicians.
4And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them.
4I will make immature youths their leaders, and children will rule over them.
5And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbor: the child shall behave himself proudly against the old man, and the base against the honorable.
5The people will mistreat each other—everyone will turn against their neighbor. Young people will be disrespectful to the elderly, and the common people will insult the noble.
6When a man shall take hold of his brother in the house of his father, saying, Thou hast clothing, be thou our ruler, and let this ruin be under thy hand;
6In those days, a man will grab his own brother in their father’s house and say, 'You still have a coat, so you be our leader! Take charge of this pile of ruins.'
7in that day shall he lift up his voice, saying, I will not be a healer; for in my house is neither bread nor clothing: ye shall not make me ruler of the people.
7But he will shout back, 'I cannot help you! I don't have food or clothing in my house. Don't make me the leader of the people.'
8For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen; because their tongue and their doings are against Jehovah, to provoke the eyes of his glory.
8Jerusalem is ruined and Judah has fallen because everything they say and do is against the LORD; they openly defy his glorious presence.
9The show of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have done evil unto themselves.
9The look on their faces gives them away; they show off their sin like the people of Sodom and don't even try to hide it. How terrible for them! They have brought their own destruction.
10Say ye of the righteous, that it shall be well with him; for they shall eat the fruit of their doings.
10Tell the righteous that things will go well for them, for they will enjoy the reward of their good deeds.
11Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him; for what his hands have done shall be done unto him.
11But how terrible it will be for the wicked! Disaster is coming to them, and they will be treated exactly the way they treated others.
12As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they that lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths.
12My people are oppressed by children, and women rule over them. My people, your leaders are leading you astray and confusing the path you should follow.
13Jehovah standeth up to contend, and standeth to judge the peoples.
13The LORD takes his place in court; he rises to bring judgment against the nations.
14Jehovah will enter into judgment with the elders of his people, and the princes thereof: It is ye that have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses:
14The LORD comes to judge the elders and the leaders of his people. He says, 'It is you who have ruined my vineyard. Your houses are full of things you stole from the poor.'
15what mean ye that ye crush my people, and grind the face of the poor? saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts.
15'What right do you have to crush my people and grind the faces of the poor into the dirt?' asks the Lord, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.
16Moreover Jehovah said, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with outstretched necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet;
16The LORD says, 'The women of Jerusalem are so proud! They walk with their heads held high, flirting with their eyes. They walk with dainty steps, making noise with the bangles on their ankles.'
17therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and Jehovah will lay bare their secret parts.
17Therefore, the Lord will bring scabs on the heads of the women of Jerusalem; the LORD will make them bald.
18In that day the Lord will take away the beauty of their anklets, and the cauls, and the crescents;
18In that day the Lord will take away all their finery: the ankle bracelets, the headbands, and the crescent necklaces;
20the headtires, and the ankle chains, and the sashes, and the perfume-boxes, and the amulets;
20the scarves, the ankle chains, the sashes, the perfume bottles, and the charms;
22the festival robes, and the mantles, and the shawls, and the satchels;
22the expensive robes, the capes, the shawls, and the purses;
23the hand-mirrors, and the fine linen, and the turbans, and the veils.
23the mirrors, the linen garments, the turbans, and the long cloaks.
24And it shall come to pass, that instead of sweet spices there shall be rottenness; and instead of a girdle, a rope; and instead of well set hair, baldness; and instead of a robe, a girding of sackcloth; branding instead of beauty.
24Instead of smelling like sweet perfume, they will stink of decay. Instead of wearing beautiful belts, they will wear ropes. Instead of elegant hair, they will be bald. Instead of fine clothes, they will wear rough burlap. They will have brands of shame instead of beauty.
