Isaiah 2

1The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

1This is the message that Isaiah son of Amoz received in a vision concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

2And it shall come to pass in the latter days, that the mountain of Jehovah’s house shall be established on the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.

2In the future, the mountain where the Lord’s temple stands will be established as the highest of all mountains; it will be raised above the hills, and people from every nation will stream toward it.

3And many peoples shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of Jehovah, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of Jehovah from Jerusalem.

3Many people will come and say, 'Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the temple of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways so that we may live as he wants us to.' For the law will go out from Zion, and the word of the Lord will come from Jerusalem.

4And he will judge between the nations, and will decide concerning many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning-hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

4He will settle disputes between nations and resolve conflicts for many people. They will hammer their swords into plow blades and their spears into tools for pruning trees. Nation will no longer fight against nation, and they will never again train for war.

5O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of Jehovah.

5Come, descendants of Jacob, let us live in the light of the Lord.

6For thou hast forsaken thy people the house of Jacob, because they are filled with customs from the east, and are soothsayers like the Philistines, and they strike hands with the children of foreigners.

6Lord, you have abandoned your people, the descendants of Jacob, because they are filled with superstitions from the East. They practice magic like the Philistines and make business deals with foreigners.

7And their land is full of silver and gold, neither is there any end of their treasures; their land also is full of horses, neither is there any end of their chariots.

7Their land is full of silver and gold; there is no end to their riches. Their land is full of horses, and their chariots are countless.

8Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made.

8Their land is also full of idols. They worship things they made themselves, objects formed by their own fingers.

9And the mean man is bowed down, and the great man is brought low: therefore forgive them not.

9So common people are humbled and the powerful are brought low—do not forgive them.

10Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust, from before the terror of Jehovah, and from the glory of his majesty.

10Go into the caves of the rocks and hide in the dust to escape the terror of the Lord and the glory of his majesty!

11The lofty looks of man shall be brought low, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and Jehovah alone shall be exalted in that day.

11Human pride will be brought down, and the arrogance of people will be humbled. Only the Lord will be exalted on that day.

12For there shall be a day of Jehovah of hosts upon all that is proud and haughty, and upon all that is lifted up; and it shall be brought low;

12For the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has a day of judgment coming against everyone who is proud and arrogant, and against everything that is high and mighty, to bring them low.

13and upon all the cedars of Lebanon, that are high and lifted up, and upon all the oaks of Bashan,

13It will come against all the tall and lofty cedar trees of Lebanon and all the great oak trees of Bashan.

14and upon all the high mountains, and upon all the hills that are lifted up,

14It will come against all the high mountains and every towering hill.

15and upon every lofty tower, and upon every fortified wall,

15It will come against every high tower and every strong, fortified wall.

16and upon all the ships of Tarshish, and upon all pleasant imagery.

16It will come against all the large trading ships of Tarshish and every beautiful vessel.

17And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be brought low; and Jehovah alone shall be exalted in that day.

17Human pride will be humbled, and the arrogance of men will be brought low. Only the Lord will be exalted on that day.

18And the idols shall utterly pass away.

18And all the idols will completely disappear.

19And men shall go into the caves of the rocks, and into the holes of the earth, from before the terror of Jehovah, and from the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake mightily the earth.

19People will crawl into caves in the rocks and holes in the ground to hide from the terror of the Lord and the glory of his majesty when he rises to shake the earth.

20In that day men shall cast away their idols of silver, and their idols of gold, which have been made for them to worship, to the moles and to the bats;

20On that day, people will throw away their silver and gold idols—the ones they made to worship—tossing them to the rodents and the bats.

21to go into the caverns of the rocks, and into the clefts of the ragged rocks, from before the terror of Jehovah, and from the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake mightily the earth.

21They will hide in the crevices of the rocks and the gaps in the cliffs to escape the terror of the Lord and the glory of his majesty when he rises to shake the earth.

22Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils; for wherein is he to be accounted of?

22Stop putting your trust in mere humans, who have only a breath in their nostrils. Why should they be considered significant?
