1And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, as unto babes in Christ.
1Brothers and sisters, I couldn't speak to you as people who are guided by the Spirit. Instead, I had to talk to you as people who follow their own human desires—like infants in Christ.
2I fed you with milk, not with meat; for ye were not yet able to bear it: nay, not even now are ye able;
2I gave you milk to drink, not solid food, because you weren't ready for it. In fact, you still aren't ready.
3for ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you jealousy and strife, are ye not carnal, and do ye not walk after the manner of men?
3You are still following your own human nature. Since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, aren't you living by human standards and acting like everyone else?
4For when one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not men?
4When one of you says, 'I follow Paul,' and another says, 'I follow Apollos,' aren't you acting just like ordinary people?
5What then is Apollos? and what is Paul? Ministers through whom ye believed; and each as the Lord gave to him.
5After all, who is Apollos? And who is Paul? We are only servants through whom you came to believe, as the Lord gave us our tasks.
6I planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.
6I planted the seed in the hearts of people, and Apollos watered it, but God is the one who made it grow.
7So then neither is he that planteth anything, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.
7So the one who plants isn't important, and the one who waters isn't important. Only God, who makes things grow, is truly important.
8Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: but each shall receive his own reward according to his own labor.
8The one who plants and the one who waters work together for the same purpose. Each person will be rewarded for their own hard work.
9For we are God’s fellow-workers: ye are God’s husbandry, God’s building.
9We are God’s coworkers, and you are God’s field and God’s building.
10According to the grace of God which was given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder I laid a foundation; and another buildeth thereon. But let each man take heed how he buildeth thereon.
10Because of the grace God gave me, I laid the foundation like an expert builder, and now someone else is building on it. But everyone should be careful how they build.
11For other foundation can no man lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
11No one can lay any foundation other than the one that is already laid, and that foundation is Jesus Christ.
12But if any man buildeth on the foundation gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, stubble;
12People may build on that foundation using gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw.
13each man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it is revealed in fire; and the fire itself shall prove each man’s work of what sort it is.
13But each person’s work will be clearly shown for what it is. The day of judgment will reveal it with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person's work.
14If any man’s work shall abide which he built thereon, he shall receive a reward.
14If what someone has built on the foundation survives the fire, that person will receive a reward.
15If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as through fire.
15If someone’s work is burned up, they will suffer loss. They will be saved, but it will be like someone escaping through a fire.
16Know ye not that ye are a temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
16Don’t you realize that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?
17If any man destroyeth the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, and such are ye.
17If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person. God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.
18Let no man deceive himself. If any man thinketh that he is wise among you in this world, let him become a fool, that he may become wise.
18Don't fool yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this world, you should become a 'fool' so that you can become truly wise.
19For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He that taketh the wise in their craftiness:
19The wisdom of this world is nonsense to God. As the Scriptures say, 'He catches the wise in their own cleverness.'
20and again, The Lord knoweth the reasonings of the wise, that they are vain.
20And again, 'The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are worthless.'
21Wherefore let no one glory in men. For all things are yours;
21So then, no one should brag about human leaders. Everything belongs to you:
