1I say then, Did God cast off his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.

1So I ask, did God reject his own people? Absolutely not! I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham from the tribe of Benjamin.

2God did not cast off his people which he foreknew. Or know ye not what the scripture saith of Elijah? how he pleadeth with God against Israel:

2God has not rejected his people, whom he chose from the beginning. Don't you know what the Scripture says about Elijah and how he complained to God against Israel?

3Lord, they have killed thy prophets, they have digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.

3He said, 'Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me, too.'

4But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have left for myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to Baal.

4But what was God's reply to him? 'I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have never bowed down to worship the idol Baal.'

5Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

5It is the same way today; there is a small group of people who have been chosen by God’s grace.

6But if it is by grace, it is no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace.

6And if it is by grace, then it is not based on doing good works. If it were based on works, grace would not really be grace anymore.

7What then? That which Israel seeketh for, that he obtained not; but the election obtained it, and the rest were hardened:

7So what happened? The people of Israel did not find what they were looking for. The small group God chose found it, but the hearts of the rest were made hard.

8according as it is written, God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear, unto this very day.

8As the Scripture says: 'God gave them a spirit that makes them sleepy; he gave them eyes that do not see and ears that do not hear, and it is still like that today.'

9And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, And a stumblingblock, and a recompense unto them:

9And David says: 'Let their dinner table become a snare and a trap, a pitfall and a punishment for them.

10Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, And bow thou down their back always.

10Let their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and let their backs be bent under their burdens forever.'

11I say then, Did they stumble that they might fall? God forbid: but by their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, to provoke them to jealousy.

11So I ask, did they stumble so badly that they fell forever? Not at all! But because of their mistake, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make the Israelites jealous.

12Now if their fall is the riches of the world, and their loss the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness?

12Now if their mistake brought spiritual riches to the world, and if their loss brought riches to the Gentiles, think how much greater a blessing the world will receive when they are restored!

13But I speak to you that are Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle of Gentiles, I glorify my ministry;

13I am saying this especially for you Gentiles. Since I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I take pride in my work.

14if by any means I may provoke to jealousy them that are my flesh, and may save some of them.

14I hope that in some way I can make my own people jealous and save some of them.

15For if the casting away of them is the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?

15For if their rejection meant that the rest of the world was reconciled to God, what will it be like when they are accepted? It will be nothing less than life from the dead!

16And if the firstfruit is holy, so is the lump: and if the root is holy, so are the branches.

16If the first piece of dough is holy, the whole batch is holy; and if the root of a tree is holy, the branches are holy too.

17But if some of the branches were broken off, and thou, being a wild olive, wast grafted in among them, and didst become partaker with them of the root of the fatness of the olive tree;

17But some of the branches were broken off, and you, who were like a branch from a wild olive tree, were grafted in among the others. Now you share in the nourishment from the root of the cultivated olive tree.

18glory not over the branches: but if thou gloriest, it is not thou that bearest the root, but the root thee.

18Do not brag and look down on those branches that were broken off. If you do brag, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you.

19Thou wilt say then, Branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in.

19You might say, 'Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.'

20Well; by their unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by thy faith. Be not highminded, but fear:

20That is true. They were broken off because they did not believe, and you stay in place because you do believe. So do not be proud, but be humble and careful.

21for if God spared not the natural branches, neither will he spare thee.

21For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either. Notice both the kindness and the severity of God.

22Behold then the goodness and severity of God: toward them that fell, severity; but toward thee, God’s goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.

22He is severe toward those who fell, but he is kind to you, as long as you continue to live in his kindness. Otherwise, you will also be cut off.强化

23And they also, if they continue not in their unbelief, shall be grafted in: for God is able to graft them in again.

23And if the people of Israel do not continue in their unbelief, they will be grafted back in. God has the power to graft them in again.

24For if thou wast cut out of that which is by nature a wild olive tree, and wast grafted contrary to nature into a good olive tree; how much more shall these, which are the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?

24After all, if you were cut from a wild olive tree and grafted onto a good one—which is not the natural way—how much easier it will be for these natural branches to be grafted back onto their own tree!

25For I would not, brethren, have you ignorant of this mystery, lest ye be wise in your own conceits, that a hardening in part hath befallen Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in;

25Brothers and sisters, I want you to understand this secret so that you won't think you are smarter than you really are. A part of Israel has become stubborn, and this will last until the full number of Gentiles has come to God.

26and so all Israel shall be saved: even as it is written, There shall come out of Zion the Deliverer; He shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:

26And this is how all Israel will be saved. As the Scripture says: 'The Deliverer will come from Zion; he will remove all ungodliness from the descendants of Jacob.

27And this is my covenant unto them, When I shall take away their sins.

27And this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins.'

28As touching the gospel, they are enemies for your sake: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers’ sake.

28Regarding the Good News, they are treated as enemies for your benefit. But regarding God's choice, they are still loved because of the promises made to their ancestors.

29For the gifts and the calling of God are not repented of.

29For God does not take back his gifts or his call.

30For as ye in time past were disobedient to God, but now have obtained mercy by their disobedience,

30Long ago, you Gentiles were disobedient to God, but now you have received mercy because of their disobedience.

31even so have these also now been disobedient, that by the mercy shown to you they also may now obtain mercy.

31In the same way, they have now become disobedient so that they can also receive mercy, because of the mercy God has shown to you.

32For God hath shut up all unto disobedience, that he might have mercy upon all.

32For God has made everyone a prisoner of their own disobedience so that he can show mercy to everyone.

33O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out!

33Oh, how deep are God’s riches, wisdom, and knowledge! No one can explain his decisions or understand his ways!

34For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?

34As the Scripture says: 'Who can know what the Lord is thinking? Who is wise enough to be his advisor?

35or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?

35Who has ever given anything to God that God would need to pay them back?'

36For of him, and through him, and unto him, are all things. To him be the glory for ever. Amen.

36For everything comes from him, exists through his power, and is for his glory. To him be glory forever! Amen.
