1And the angel of Jehovah came up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you:
1The angel of the LORD went up from Gilgal to Bochim and said, 'I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land I promised to your ancestors. I said, I will never break my covenant with you.
2and ye shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall break down their altars. But ye have not hearkened unto my voice: why have ye done this?
2But you were not to make any treaties with the people of this land, and you were supposed to tear down their altars. Yet you have not obeyed me. Why have you done this?
3Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.
3Therefore I now say: I will not drive them out before you. They will be like thorns in your sides, and their gods will be a trap for you.'
4And it came to pass, when the angel of Jehovah spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.
4When the angel of the LORD spoke these words to all the Israelites, the people wept loudly.
5And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto Jehovah.
5They called that place Bochim, and they offered sacrifices there to the LORD.
6Now when Joshua had sent the people away, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.
6After Joshua had dismissed the Israelites, they all went to take possession of the land they had inherited.
7And the people served Jehovah all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of Jehovah that he had wrought for Israel.
7The people served the LORD throughout the lifetime of Joshua and the lifetimes of the leaders who outlived him—those who had seen all the great things the LORD had done for Israel.
8And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Jehovah, died, being a hundred and ten years old.
8Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of one hundred and ten.
9And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill-country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash.
9They buried him on the land of his inheritance at Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.
10And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, that knew not Jehovah, nor yet the work which he had wrought for Israel.
10After that entire generation had died, another generation grew up who did not know the LORD or what he had done for Israel.
11And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and served the Baalim;
11Then the Israelites did what was evil in the LORD's sight and served the gods known as the Baals.
12and they forsook Jehovah, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the peoples that were round about them, and bowed themselves down unto them: and they provoked Jehovah to anger.
12They abandoned the LORD, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshiped various gods of the nations around them, making the LORD angry.
13And they forsook Jehovah, and served Baal and the Ashtaroth.
13They abandoned the LORD to serve Baal and the Ashtoreths.
14And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that despoiled them; and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.
14The LORD was very angry with Israel, so he handed them over to raiders who stole from them. He sold them to the enemies all around them, so that they could no longer protect themselves.
15Whithersoever they went out, the hand of Jehovah was against them for evil, as Jehovah had spoken, and as Jehovah had sworn unto them: and they were sore distressed.
15Every time Israel went out to fight, the hand of the LORD was against them to bring disaster, just as he had warned and sworn to them. They were in great distress.
16And Jehovah raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those that despoiled them.
16Then the LORD raised up judges who saved them from the hands of these raiders.
17And yet they hearkened not unto their judges; for they played the harlot after other gods, and bowed themselves down unto them: they turned aside quickly out of the way wherein their fathers walked, obeying the commandments of Jehovah; but they did not so.
17Yet they would not listen to their judges but acted like unfaithful spouses by following other gods and bowing down to them. They quickly turned away from the path of their ancestors, who had obeyed the LORD’S commands. They did not live like their ancestors.
18And when Jehovah raised them up judges, then Jehovah was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented Jehovah because of their groaning by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.
18Whenever the LORD raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved the people from their enemies as long as the judge lived; for the LORD felt sorry for them as they groaned under those who oppressed and mistreated them.
19But it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they turned back, and dealt more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their doings, nor from their stubborn way.
19But when the judge died, the people returned to even more corrupt ways than their ancestors. They followed other gods, serving and bowing down to them. They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn ways.
20And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel; and he said, Because this nation have transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice;
20Therefore the LORD’S anger burned against Israel, and he said, 'Because this nation has broken the covenant I made with their ancestors and has not listened to me,
21I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations that Joshua left when he died;
21I will no longer drive out any of the nations that Joshua left when he died.
