1Putting away therefore all wickedness, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,
1So get rid of all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, and all kind of unkind talk.
2as newborn babes, long for the spiritual milk which is without guile, that ye may grow thereby unto salvation;
2Like newborn babies, crave the pure spiritual milk of the word so that you can grow into the full experience of salvation.
3if ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious:
3You have already tasted and seen that the Lord is good.
4unto whom coming, a living stone, rejected indeed of men, but with God elect, precious,
4Come to him, the living stone. People rejected him, but he is chosen and precious in God’s sight.
5ye also, as living stones, are built up a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
5You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy set of priests, offering spiritual sacrifices that God accepts through Jesus Christ.
6Because it is contained in scripture, Behold, I lay in Zion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: And he that believeth on him shall not be put to shame.
6As the Scripture says: "Look, I am placing a chosen and precious cornerstone in Zion, and anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame."
7For you therefore that believe is the preciousness: but for such as disbelieve, The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner;
7To you who believe, he is very precious. But for those who do not believe, "The stone the builders tossed aside has become the most important stone of the corner."
8and, A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence; for they stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.
8And the Scripture also says, "He is a stone that makes people stumble and a rock that makes them fall." They stumble because they do not obey the word, which is what was destined to happen.
9But ye are an elect race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, that ye may show forth the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
9But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. You were chosen to tell others about the wonderful things done by him who called you out of darkness into his amazing light.
10who in time past were no people, but now are the people of God: who had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
10At one time you were not a people at all, but now you are the people of God. Once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
11Beloved, I beseech you as sojourners and pilgrims, to abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
11Dear friends, I urge you as foreigners and temporary residents to stay away from the worldly desires that wage war against your soul.
12having your behavior seemly among the Gentiles; that, wherein they speak against you as evil-doers, they may by your good works, which they behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
12Live such good lives among your non-believing neighbors that even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your good deeds and give glory to God when he visits us.
13Be subject to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether to the king, as supreme;
13For the Lord’s sake, submit to every human authority—whether it is the king, who has the highest power,
14or unto governors, as sent by him for vengeance on evil-doers and for praise to them that do well.
14or the governors he sends to punish those who do wrong and to honor those who do right.
15For so is the will of God, that by well-doing ye should put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:
15It is God’s will that by doing good you should shut the mouths of ignorant people who say foolish things.
16as free, and not using your freedom for a cloak of wickedness, but as bondservants of God.
16Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for doing evil; live as God’s servants.
17Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.
17Respect everyone. Love the family of believers. Fear God. Respect the king.
18Servants, bein subjection to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.
18Servants, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect—not only to those who are kind and gentle, but also to those who are cruel.
19For this is acceptable, if for conscience toward God a man endureth griefs, suffering wrongfully.
19For God is pleased when someone, because they are mindful of God, endures the pain of unfair suffering.
20For what glory is it, if, when ye sin, and are buffeted for it, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye shall take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.
20What credit is there if you are beaten for doing wrong and you endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it patiently, God is pleased with you.
21For hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that ye should follow his steps:
21This is what you were called to do, because Christ suffered for you. He left you an example so that you would follow in his footsteps.
22who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
22He never committed a sin, and no lie ever came out of his mouth.
23who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
23When he was insulted, he did not insult back. When he suffered, he did not make threats. Instead, he left his case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly.
