1I said, I will take heed to my ways, That I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, While the wicked is before me.

1I said, 'I will be careful about how I live so that I do not sin with my words. I will put a muzzle on my mouth while the wicked are around me.'

2I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; And my sorrow was stirred.

2I was completely silent and said nothing, even avoiding good words, but my inner distress only got worse.

3My heart was hot within me; While I was musing the fire burned; Then spake I with my tongue:

3My heart grew hot inside me. As I thought about it, the fire burned, and finally I spoke with my tongue:

4Jehovah, make me to know mine end, And the measure of my days, what it is; Let me know how frail I am.

4'O LORD, help me realize how my life will end and how many days I have left. Let me know how short-lived and fragile I really am.'

5Behold, thou hast made my daysas handbreadths; And my life-time is as nothing before thee: Surely every man at his best estate is altogether vanity. [Selah

5Look, you have made my life as short as the width of a hand; my whole lifetime is like nothing to you. Truly, every person is just a puff of wind, even at their very best.

6Surely every man walketh in a vain show; Surely they are disquieted in vain: He heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them.

6Every person walks around like a shadow. They worry and hustle for no reason; they pile up wealth without knowing who will eventually get it.

7And now, Lord, what wait I for? My hope is in thee.

7And now, Lord, what am I waiting for? My only hope is in you.

8Deliver me from all my transgressions: Make me not the reproach of the foolish.

8Save me from all my sins. Do not let me be mocked by fools.

9I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; Because thou didst it.

9I kept silent and did not open my mouth, because you are the one who has done this.

10Remove thy stroke away from me: I am consumed by the blow of thy hand.

10Stop punishing me; I am being destroyed by the blows from your hand.

11When thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity, Thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth: Surely every man is vanity. [Selah

11When you discipline people for their sins, you consume their riches like a moth eats cloth. Truly, every person is just a breath.

12Hear my prayer, O Jehovah, and give ear unto my cry; Hold not thy peace at my tears: For I am a stranger with thee, A sojourner, as all my fathers were.

12Listen to my prayer, O LORD, and hear my cry for help. Do not ignore my tears. For I am just a traveler staying with you, a temporary resident just as all my ancestors were.

13Oh spare me, that I may recover strength, Before I go hence, and be no more.

13Look away from me so that I may smile again and find some strength before I die and am gone.
