1Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, tookmen:

1Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the grandson of Kohath and great-grandson of Levi, teamed up with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, who were all from the tribe of Reuben.

2and they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the congregation, called to the assembly, men of renown;

2They rose up against Moses, joined by 250 other Israelite men who were well-known leaders of the community and members of the council.

3and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and Jehovah is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the assembly of Jehovah?

3They gathered together to confront Moses and Aaron, saying, 'You have gone too far! The whole community is holy—every person among them—and the LORD is with them. Why do you set yourselves above the LORD’s assembly?'

4And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face:

4When Moses heard this, he fell face down on the ground.

5and he spake unto Korah and unto all his company, saying, In the morning Jehovah will show who are his, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near unto him: even him whom he shall choose will he cause to come near unto him.

5Then he said to Korah and all his followers, 'In the morning the LORD will show who belongs to him and who is holy. He will allow only the person he chooses to come near him.'

6This do: take you censers, Korah, and all his company;

6'You must do this: Korah, you and all your followers, take incense burners.'

7and put fire in them, and put incense upon them before Jehovah to-morrow: and it shall be that the man whom Jehovah doth choose, he shall be holy: ye take too much upon you, ye sons of Levi.

7'Tomorrow, put fire and incense in them before the LORD. Then the man the LORD chooses will be the one who is holy. You sons of Levi are the ones who have gone too far!'

8And Moses said unto Korah, Hear now, ye sons of Levi:

8Moses also said to Korah, 'Listen now, you sons of Levi!

9seemeth it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself, to do the service of the tabernacle of Jehovah, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them;

9'Is it not enough for you that the God of Israel has set you apart from the rest of the community to bring you near to himself? He gave you the job of working at the LORD’s Tabernacle and standing before the people to serve them.

10and that he hath brought thee near, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee? and seek ye the priesthood also?

10'He has brought you and all your fellow Levites near to him, and now you are trying to take the priesthood too?

11Therefore thou and all thy company are gathered together against Jehovah: and Aaron, what is he that ye murmur against him?

11'Therefore, you and all your followers have joined together against the LORD. As for Aaron, who is he that you should complain against him?'

12And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; and they said, We will not come up:

12Then Moses sent for Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, but they responded, 'We will not come!

13is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, but thou must needs make thyself also a prince over us?

13'Is it not enough that you brought us out of a land flowing with milk and honey just to kill us in the desert? Now you want to make yourself a ruler over us too?

14Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not come up.

14'What’s more, you haven’t brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey or given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Do you think you can pull the wool over these men’s eyes? We will not come up!'

15And Moses was very wroth, and said unto Jehovah, Respect not thou their offering: I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I hurt one of them.

15Moses became very angry and said to the LORD, 'Do not accept their grain offering! I have not taken even one donkey from them, and I have not wronged any of them.'

16And Moses said unto Korah, Be thou and all thy company before Jehovah, thou, and they, and Aaron, to-morrow:

16Moses said to Korah, 'You and all your followers must appear before the LORD tomorrow—you, they, and Aaron.

17and take ye every man his censer, and put incense upon them, and bring ye before Jehovah every man his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; thou also, and Aaron, each his censer.

17'Each of you 250 men must take his incense burner, put incense in it, and present it before the LORD. You and Aaron must also bring your incense burners.'

18And they took every man his censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense thereon, and stood at the door of the tent of meeting with Moses and Aaron.

18So each man took his burner, put fire and incense in it, and stood with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.

19And Korah assembled all the congregation against them unto the door of the tent of meeting: and the glory of Jehovah appeared unto all the congregation.

19When Korah had gathered his whole following against Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, the glory of the LORD appeared to the entire community.

20And Jehovah spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,

20The LORD said to Moses and Aaron,

21Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.

21'Move away from this group so that I may destroy them in an instant.'

22And they fell upon their faces, and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation?

22But Moses and Aaron fell face down and cried out, 'O God, the God who gives breath to all people, will you be angry with the entire community when only one man sins?'

23And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

23Then the LORD said to Moses,

24Speak unto the congregation, saying, Get you up from about the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.

24'Tell the people to move away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.'

25And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.

25Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him.

26And he spake unto the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be consumed in all their sins.

26He warned the people, 'Step back from the tents of these wicked men! Do not touch anything that belongs to them, or you will be swept away because of all their sins.'

27So they gat them up from the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side: and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood at the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little ones.

27So the people moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing at the entrances of their tents with their wives, children, and little ones.

28And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that Jehovah hath sent me to do all these works; for I have not done them of mine own mind.

28Moses said, 'This is how you will know the LORD sent me to do all these things and that it wasn't my own idea:

29If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then Jehovah hath not sent me.

29'If these men die a natural death like everyone else, then the LORD hasn't sent me.

30But if Jehovah make a new thing, and the ground open its mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down alive into Sheol; then ye shall understand that these men have despised Jehovah.

30'But if the LORD does something brand new—if the ground opens its mouth and swallows them and everything they own, and they go down alive into the grave—then you will know these men have treated the LORD with contempt.'

31And it came to pass, as he made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them;

31As soon as he finished saying these words, the ground under them split apart.

32and the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.

32The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, along with their families, everyone associated with Korah, and all their possessions.

33So they, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into Sheol: and the earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the assembly.

33They went down alive into the grave with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they vanished from the community.

34And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them; for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up.

34All the Israelites around them fled when they heard their screams, shouting, 'The earth is going to swallow us, too!'

35And fire came forth from Jehovah, and devoured the two hundred and fifty men that offered the incense.

35Then fire came out from the LORD and consumed the 250 men who were offering the incense.

36And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

36Then the LORD said to Moses,

37Speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter thou the fire yonder; for they are holy,

37'Tell Eleazar son of Aaron the priest to collect the incense burners from the remains of the fire and scatter the coals, because the burners are holy.

38even the censers of these sinners against their own lives; and let them be made beaten plates for a covering of the altar: for they offered them before Jehovah; therefore they are holy; and they shall be a sign unto the children of Israel.

38'Take the burners of these men who died because of their sin and hammer them into thin sheets to cover the altar. Because they were presented before the LORD, they are holy. They will be a sign to the people of Israel.'

39And Eleazar the priest took the brazen censers, which they that were burnt had offered; and they beat them out for a covering of the altar,

39So Eleazar the priest took the bronze burners that the men who were burned up had presented, and he had them hammered out to cover the altar.

40to be a memorial unto the children of Israel, to the end that no stranger, that is not of the seed of Aaron, come near to burn incense before Jehovah; that he be not as Korah, and as his company: as Jehovah spake unto him by Moses.

40This was to remind the Israelites that no unauthorized person—no one who is not a descendant of Aaron—should come to burn incense before the LORD. Otherwise, they might end up like Korah and his followers. This was done as the LORD had told him through Moses.

41But on the morrow all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying, Ye have killed the people of Jehovah.

41The very next day, the whole Israelite community complained against Moses and Aaron, saying, 'You have killed the LORD’s people.'

42And it came to pass, when the congregation was assembled against Moses and against Aaron, that they looked toward the tent of meeting: and, behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of Jehovah appeared.

42When the community gathered against Moses and Aaron and turned toward the Tent of Meeting, they saw that the cloud had covered it and the glory of the LORD appeared.

43And Moses and Aaron came to the front of the tent of meeting.

43Then Moses and Aaron went to the front of the Tent of Meeting.

44And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

44The LORD said to Moses,

45Get you up from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment. And they fell upon their faces.

45'Get away from this community so I can destroy them in an instant!' And they fell face down.

46And Moses said unto Aaron, Take thy censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and lay incense thereon, and carry it quickly unto the congregation, and make atonement for them: for there is wrath gone out from Jehovah; the plague is begun.

46Then Moses said to Aaron, 'Take your incense burner, put fire in it from the altar, and add incense. Hurry to the community to make atonement for them, because the LORD’s anger has flared up and a plague has started.'

47And Aaron took as Moses spake, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and, behold, the plague was begun among the people: and he put on the incense, and made atonement for the people.

47Aaron did as Moses said and ran into the middle of the crowd. The plague had already started among the people, but Aaron offered the incense and made atonement for them.

48And he stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed.

48He stood between the living and the dead, and the plague stopped.

49Now they that died by the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, besides them that died about the matter of Korah.

49But 14,700 people died from that plague, in addition to those who died because of Korah.

50And Aaron returned unto Moses unto the door of the tent of meeting: and the plague was stayed.

50Then Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, for the plague had been stopped.
