1Why are times not laid up by the Almighty? And why do not they that know him see his days?

1Why doesn’t the Almighty set times for judgment? Why don’t those who know Him ever see the days He intervenes?

2There are that remove the landmarks; They violently take away flocks, and feed them.

2Wicked people move boundary stones to steal land; they seize flocks and put them in their own pastures.

3They drive away the ass of the fatherless; They take the widow’s ox for a pledge.

3They drive away the donkey of the orphan and take the widow’s ox as security for a loan.

4They turn the needy out of the way: The poor of the earth all hide themselves.

4They push the needy off the path, forcing all the poor of the land into hiding.

5Behold, as wild asses in the desert They go forth to their work, seeking diligently for food; The wildernessyieldeththem bread for their children.

5Like wild donkeys in the desert, the poor go out to work, searching for food; the wasteland is the only source of food for their children.

6They cut their provender in the field; And they glean the vintage of the wicked.

6They have to harvest grain in fields that aren’t theirs and pick the leftover grapes in the vineyards of the wicked.

7They lie all night naked without clothing, And have no covering in the cold.

7They spend the night naked because they have no clothes; they have nothing to cover themselves in the cold.

8They are wet with the showers of the mountains, And embrace the rock for want of a shelter.

8They are soaked by mountain rainstorms and huddle against the rocks because they have no shelter.

9There are that pluck the fatherless from the breast, And take a pledge of the poor;

9Cruel men snatch a fatherless infant from the breast and take a poor person’s coat as a pledge for a debt.

10So thatthey go about naked without clothing, And being hungry they carry the sheaves.

10The poor are forced to go about naked, without clothing; even though they carry bundles of harvested grain, they go hungry.

11They make oil within the walls of these men; They treadtheirwinepresses, and suffer thirst.

11They press out olive oil between the rows of olive trees and tread the winepresses, yet they suffer from thirst.

12From out of the populous city men groan, And the soul of the wounded crieth out: Yet God regardeth not the folly.

12Grit and groans rise up from the city, and the wounded cry out for help, but God does not seem to care about this injustice.

13These are of them that rebel against the light; They know not the ways thereof, Nor abide in the paths thereof.

13Then there are those who rebel against the light; they are not familiar with its ways and do not stay on its paths.

14The murderer riseth with the light; He killeth the poor and needy; And in the night he is as a thief.

14The murderer gets up at dawn to kill the poor and needy; in the night, he acts like a thief.

15The eye also of the adulterer waiteth for the twilight, Saying, No eye shall see me: And he disguiseth his face.

15The adulterer waits for the twilight, thinking, 'No one will see me,' and he covers his face to hide his identity.

16In the dark they dig through houses: They shut themselves up in the day-time; They know not the light.

16In the dark, they break into houses; during the day, they lock themselves in because they want nothing to do with the light.

17For the morning is to all of them as thick darkness; For they know the terrors of the thick darkness.

17For all of them, the morning is as terrifying as deep darkness, because they are friends with the terrors of the dark.

18Swiftly theypass awayupon the face of the waters; Their portion is cursed in the earth: They turn not into the way of the vineyards.

18They are like foam on the surface of the water; their property on earth is cursed, so no one goes to work in their vineyards.

19Drought and heat consume the snow waters: So dothSheolthose thathave sinned.

19Just as drought and heat snatch away the melted snow, so the grave consumes those who have sinned.

20The womb shall forget him; The worm shall feed sweetly on him; He shall be no more remembered; And unrighteousness shall be broken as a tree.

20Even their own mothers forget them; the worm feeds sweetly on them. The wicked are remembered no more; injustice is broken like a fallen tree.

21He devoureth the barren that beareth not, And doeth not good to the widow.

21These men mistreat the childless woman and show no kindness to the widow.

22YetGod preserveth the mighty by his power: He riseth up that hath no assurance of life.

22But God drags away the mighty by His power; though they rise high, they have no real assurance of life.

23God giveth them to be in security, and they rest thereon; And his eyes are upon their ways.

23God may let them feel secure and rely on that safety, but His eyes are watching everything they do.

24They are exalted; yet a little while, and they are gone; Yea, they are brought low, they are taken out of the way as all others, And are cut off as the tops of the ears of grain.

24They are honored for a little while, and then they are gone; they are brought low and wither like everyone else, cut off like the heads of grain.

25And if it be not so now, who will prove me a liar, And make my speech nothing worth?

25If this is not true, who can prove me a liar or show that my words are worthless?
