1What advantage then hath the Jew? or what is the profit of circumcision?

1So, what advantage does a Jew have? Or what is the benefit of circumcision?

2Much every way: first of all, that they were intrusted with the oracles of God.

2There are many benefits in every way! Most importantly, the Jews were the ones trusted with the very words of God.

3For what if some were without faith? shall their want of faith make of none effect the faithfulness of God?

3What if some of them were unfaithful? Does their lack of faith cancel out God’s faithfulness?

4God forbid: yea, let God be found true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy words, And mightest prevail when thou comest into judgment.

4Of course not! Let God be true even if every human is a liar. As the Scripture says, 'You will be proved right in what you say and win your case when you are judged.'

5But if our unrighteousness commendeth the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who visiteth with wrath? (I speak after the manner of men.)

5But if our wrongdoing serves to highlight how righteous God is, what should we say? Is God unfair when he punishes us with his anger? (I am using a common human argument here.)

6God forbid: for then how shall God judge the world?

6Absolutely not! If God were unfair, how could he judge the world?

7But if the truth of God through my lie abounded unto his glory, why am I also still judged as a sinner?

7Someone might argue, 'If my lie makes God’s truthfulness stand out even more for his glory, why am I still being condemned as a sinner?'

8and why not (as we are slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say), Let us do evil, that good may come? whose condemnation is just.

8And why not say—as some people slander us by claiming we say—'Let us do evil so that good may come of it'? People who say such things deserve the judgment they get.

9What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we before laid to the charge both of Jews and Greeks, that they are all under sin;

9Well then, are we Jews any better than others? Not at all. We have already shown that everyone—whether Jew or Greek—is under the power of sin.

10as it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one;

10As the Scripture says: 'No one is righteous, not even one person.

11There is none that understandeth, There is none that seeketh after God;

11No one understands; no one is truly seeking God.

12They have all turned aside, they are together become unprofitable; There is none that doeth good, no, not so much as one:

12Everyone has turned away; they have all become worthless together. No one does what is good, not even one person.'

13Their throat is an open sepulchre; With their tongues they have used deceit: The poison of asps is under their lips:

13'Their throat is like an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive. The venom of snakes is under their lips.'

14Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:

14'Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.'

15Their feet are swift to shed blood;

15'They are quick to run and commit murder.

16Destruction and misery are in their ways;

16Destruction and misery follow them wherever they go,

17And the way of peace have they not known:

17and they have never known the way of peace.'

18There is no fear of God before their eyes.

18'They have no fear or respect for God.'

19Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it speaketh to them that are under the law; that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God:

19Now we know that whatever the law says, it applies to those who are under the law. This is so that every excuse is silenced and the whole world is held accountable to God.

20because by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified in his sight; for through the law cometh the knowledge of sin.

20For no one will be made right with God by doing what the law commands. Instead, the law simply makes us aware of our sin.

21But now apart from the law a righteousness of God hath been manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

21But now, God has shown us a way to be made right with him that is apart from the law, though the law and the prophets told us it was coming.

22even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ unto all them that believe; for there is no distinction;

22We are made right with God through faith in Jesus Christ, and this applies to everyone who believes. There is no difference between people,

23for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God;

23because everyone has sinned and fallen short of God’s glorious standard.

24being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

24Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right with himself through the ransom paid by Christ Jesus.

25whom God set forth to be a propitiation, through faith, in his blood, to show his righteousness because of the passing over of the sins done aforetime, in the forbearance of God;

25God presented Jesus as the sacrifice that takes away sin through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his patience he had overlooked the sins people committed in the past.

26for the showing, I say, of his righteousness at this present season: that he might himself be just, and the justifier of him that hath faith in Jesus.

26He did it to demonstrate his justice in our own time, showing that he himself is fair and that he makes anyone who has faith in Jesus right with him.

27Where then is the glorying? It is excluded. By what manner of law? of works? Nay: but by a law of faith.

27So, what happens to our bragging? It is wiped out. On what basis? Is it by obeying the law? No, it is on the basis of faith.

28We reckon therefore that a man is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.

28For we conclude that a person is made right with God by faith, quite apart from obeying the law.

29Or is God the God of Jews only? is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yea, of Gentiles also:

29Is God the God of the Jews only? Isn't he the God of the Gentiles too? Yes, he is the God of the Gentiles as well.

30if so be that God is one, and he shall justify the circumcision by faith, and the uncircumcision through faith.

30Since there is only one God, he will make the circumcised right with him by faith and the uncircumcised right with him through that same faith.

31Do we then make the law of none effect through faith? God forbid: nay, we establish the law.

31Do we then cancel out the law by this faith? Not at all! Instead, we uphold the true purpose of the law.
