1Hold not thy peace, O God of my praise;

1O God, whom I praise, do not remain silent.

2For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of deceit have they opened against me: They have spoken unto me with a lying tongue.

2For wicked and deceitful people have spoken against me; they have told lies about me.

3They have compassed me about also with words of hatred, And fought against me without a cause.

3They have surrounded me with words of hate and attacked me for no reason.

4For my love they are my adversaries: But Igive myself untoprayer.

4In return for my love, they accuse me, but I keep on praying.

5And they have rewarded me evil for good, And hatred for my love.

5They pay me back evil for good and hatred for my love.

6Set thou a wicked man over him; And let an adversary stand at his right hand.

6Appoint an evil man to oppose my enemy; let an accuser stand at his right hand to prosecute him.

7When he is judged, let him come forth guilty; And let his prayer be turned into sin.

7When he is put on trial, let him be found guilty, and let even his prayers be counted as sin.

8Let his days be few; Andlet another take his office.

8Let his life be cut short, and let someone else take over his position.

9Let his children be fatherless, And his wife a widow.

9Let his children be left without a father and his wife become a widow.

10Let his children be vagabonds, and beg; And let them seek their bread out of their desolate places.

10May his children wander as beggars, forced to scavenge for food far from their ruined homes.

11Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; And let strangers make spoil of his labor.

11Let creditors seize everything he owns, and let strangers carry off all he has worked for.

12Let there be none to extend kindness unto him; Neither let there be any to have pity on his fatherless children.

12Let no one show him any kindness or have any pity on his orphaned children.

13Let his posterity be cut off; In the generation following let their name be blotted out.

13May his descendants be wiped out, and their family name be forgotten in the very next generation.

14Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with Jehovah; And let not the sin of his mother be blotted out.

14May the Lord remember the sins of his ancestors and never wipe away the sins of his mother.

15Let them be before Jehovah continually, That he may cut off the memory of them from the earth;

15May their sins always remain before the Lord, so that he will erase all memory of them from the earth.

16Because he remembered not to show kindness, But persecuted the poor and needy man, And the broken in heart, to slay them.

16For he never thought of being kind; instead, he hounded the poor, the needy, and the brokenhearted to their deaths.

17Yea, he loved cursing, and it came unto him; And he delighted not in blessing, and it was far from him.

17He loved to curse others, so let those curses fall on him; he took no pleasure in blessing others, so let blessings stay far away from him.

18He clothed himself also with cursing as with his garment, And it came into his inward parts like water, And like oil into his bones.

18He wrapped himself in cursing as if it were his clothes; let it soak into his body like water and into his bones like oil.

19Let it be unto him as the raiment wherewith he covereth himself, And for the girdle wherewith he is girded continually.

19Let his curses be like the robe he wears and like the belt he ties around himself every day.

20This is the reward of mine adversaries from Jehovah, And of them that speak evil against my soul.

20May the Lord pay back my accusers this way—all those who speak such evil against me.

21But deal thou with me, O Jehovah the Lord, for thy name’s sake: Because thy lovingkindness is good, deliver thou me;

21But you, O Lord my God, deal kindly with me for the sake of your reputation; because your faithful love is so good, rescue me.

22For I am poor and needy, And my heart is wounded within me.

22For I am poor and helpless, and my heart is deeply wounded within me.

23I am gone like the shadow when it declineth: I am tossed up and down as the locust.

23I am fading away like a shadow at sunset; I am shaken off like a locust.

24My knees are weak through fasting; And my flesh faileth of fatness.

24My knees are weak from going without food, and my body has grown thin and frail.

25I am become also a reproach unto them: When they see me, they shake their head.

25I have become an object of scorn to my enemies; when they see me, they shake their heads in contempt.

26Help me, O Jehovah my God; Oh save me according to thy lovingkindness:

26Help me, O Lord my God! Save me because of your constant love.

27That they may know that this is thy hand; That thou, Jehovah, hast done it.

27Let them know that this is your doing, and that you, Lord, have been the one to act.

28Let them curse, but bless thou: When they arise, they shall be put to shame, But thy servant shall rejoice.

28They may curse me, but you will bless me; when they attack, they will be disgraced, but I, your servant, will rejoice.

29Let mine adversaries be clothed with dishonor, And let them cover themselves with their own shame as with a robe.

29Let my accusers be clothed in disgrace; let them be wrapped in their own shame as if it were a cloak.

30I will give great thanks unto Jehovah with my mouth; Yea, I will praise him among the multitude.

30I will give great thanks to the Lord with my mouth; I will praise him in the middle of the crowd.

31For he will stand at the right hand of the needy, To save him from them that judge his soul.

31For he stands beside the needy to save them from those who would condemn them to death.
