1Praise ye Jehovah. Oh give thanks unto Jehovah; for he is good; For his lovingkindness endureth for ever.
1Praise the LORD! Give thanks to the LORD because he is good; his faithful love lasts forever.
2Who can utter the mighty acts of Jehovah, Or show forth all his praise?
2Who can fully describe the LORD’s powerful acts or tell of all the praise he deserves?
3Blessed are they that keep justice, And he that doeth righteousness at all times.
3Blessed are those who act justly and always do what is right.
4Remember me, O Jehovah, with the favor that thou bearest unto thy people; Oh visit me with thy salvation,
4Remember me, LORD, when you show favor to your people; come to my aid when you save them.
5That I may see the prosperity of thy chosen, That I may rejoice in the gladness of thy nation, That I may glory with thine inheritance.
5Let me see the prosperity of your chosen ones, let me share in the joy of your nation, and let me celebrate along with those who belong to you.
6We have sinned with our fathers, We have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly.
6We have sinned just like our ancestors did; we have done wrong and acted wickedly.
7Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt; They remembered not the multitude of thy lovingkindnesses, But were rebellious at the sea, even at the Red Sea.
7Our ancestors in Egypt did not understand your miracles; they forgot your many acts of kindness and rebelled by the sea, the Red Sea.
8Nevertheless he saved them for his name’s sake, That he might make his mighty power to be known.
8Even so, he saved them for the sake of his name, to make his mighty power known.
9He rebuked the Red Sea also, and it was dried up: So he led them through the depths, as through a wilderness.
9He shouted a command to the Red Sea and it dried up; he led them through the deep waters as if they were walking through a desert.
10And he saved them from the hand of him that hated them, And redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.
10He saved them from the power of those who hated them and rescued them from the hand of the enemy.
11And the waters covered their adversaries; There was not one of them left.
11The waters covered their adversaries; not a single one of them survived.
12Then believed they his words; They sang his praise.
12Then they believed his promises and sang his praises.
13They soon forgat his works; They waited not for his counsel,
13But they soon forgot what he had done and did not wait for his advice.
14But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, And tempted God in the desert.
14They gave in to their cravings in the wilderness and put God to the test in the desert.
15And he gave them their request, But sent leanness into their soul.
15So he gave them what they asked for, but he sent a wasting disease among them.
16They envied Moses also in the camp, AndAaron the saint of Jehovah.
16In the camp they were jealous of Moses and of Aaron, the LORD’s holy priest.
17The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, And covered the company of Abiram.
17The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan; it buried the followers of Abiram.
18And a fire was kindled in their company; The flame burned up the wicked.
18Fire broke out among their followers; a flame burned up the wicked.
19They made a calf in Horeb, And worshipped a molten image.
19At Horeb they made a calf and worshiped a metal idol.
20Thus they changed their glory For the likeness of an ox that eateth grass.
20They traded their glorious God for the image of a bull that eats grass.
21They forgat God their Saviour, Who had done great things in Egypt,
21They forgot God their Savior, who had done great things in Egypt,
22Wondrous works in the land of Ham, And terrible things by the Red Sea.
22amazing miracles in the land of Ham and awesome deeds at the Red Sea.
23Therefore he said that he would destroy them, Had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, To turn away his wrath, lest he should destroythem.
23So he said he would destroy them; but Moses, his chosen one, stood before him to block his way and turn his anger aside so he would not destroy them.
24Yea, they despised the pleasant land, They believed not his word,
24Then they rejected the pleasant land; they did not believe his promise.
25But murmured in their tents, And hearkened not unto the voice of Jehovah.
25They grumbled in their tents and did not obey the LORD.
26Therefore he sware unto them, That he would overthrow them in the wilderness,
26So he swore to them with an uplifted hand that he would make them fall in the wilderness,
27And that he would overthrow their seed among the nations, And scatter them in the lands.
27that he would scatter their descendants among the nations and disperse them throughout the lands.
28They joined themselves also unto Baal-peor, And ate the sacrifices of the dead.
28They joined in worshiping Baal of Peor and ate sacrifices offered to the dead.
29Thus they provoked him to anger with their doings; And the plague brake in upon them.
29They made the LORD angry with their actions, and a plague broke out among them.
30Then stood up Phinehas, and executed judgment; And so the plague was stayed.
30But Phinehas stood up and intervened, and the plague was stopped.
31And that was reckoned unto him for righteousness, Unto all generations for evermore.
31This was credited to him as a righteous act for all generations to come.
32They angered him also at the waters of Meribah, So that it went ill with Moses for their sakes;
32They also made the LORD angry at the waters of Meribah, and trouble came to Moses because of them.
33Because they were rebellious against his spirit, And he spake unadvisedly with his lips.
33They made him bitter in spirit, and he spoke rashly with his lips.
34They did not destroy the peoples, As Jehovah commanded them,
34They did not destroy the people of the land as the LORD had commanded them.
35But mingled themselves with the nations, And learned their works,
35Instead, they mingled with the nations and adopted their customs.
36And served their idols, Which became a snare unto them.
36They worshiped their idols, which became a trap for them.
37Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto demons,
37They even sacrificed their sons and daughters to demons.
38And shed innocent blood, Even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, Whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan; And the land was polluted with blood.
38They shed innocent blood, the blood of their own sons and daughters whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; the land was defiled by murder.
39Thus were they defiled with their works, And played the harlot in their doings.
39They made themselves unclean by what they did; they were unfaithful to God in their actions.
40Therefore was the wrath of Jehovah kindled against his people, And he abhorred his inheritance.
40Therefore the LORD was angry with his people, and he detested those who belonged to him.
41And he gave them into the hand of the nations; And they that hated them ruled over them.
41He handed them over to the nations, and those who hated them ruled over them.
42Their enemies also oppressed them, And they were brought into subjection under their hand.
42Their enemies oppressed them and brought them under their power.
43Many times did he deliver them; But they were rebellious in their counsel, And were brought low in their iniquity.
43Many times he rescued them, but they continued to rebel on purpose and sank deeper into their sin.
44Nevertheless he regarded their distress, When he heard their cry:
44Regardless, he noticed their suffering whenever he heard their cry.
45And he remembered for them his covenant, And repented according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses.
45He remembered his covenant with them and, because of his great unfailing love, he relented.
46He made them also to be pitied Of all those that carried them captive.
46He caused them to be treated with mercy by all who held them captive.
