1Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

1Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:

2Should a wise man make answer with vain knowledge, And fill himself with the east wind?

2Would a wise man answer with such empty talk? Would he fill his belly with the hot east wind?

3Should he reason with unprofitable talk, Or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?

3Should he argue with useless words or make speeches that help no one?

4Yea, thou doest away with fear, And hinderest devotion before God.

4But you even destroy the fear of God and hinder prayer to him.

5For thine iniquity teacheth thy mouth, And thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.

5Your sin prompts your speech, and you choose to speak like the crafty.

6Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I; Yea, thine own lips testify against thee.

6Your own mouth condemns you, not I; your own lips testify against you.

7Art thou the first man that was born? Or wast thou brought forth before the hills?

7Are you the very first human ever born? Were you brought forth before the hills were made?

8Hast thou heard the secret counsel of God? And dost thou limit wisdom to thyself?

8Do you listen in on God’s secret council? Do you have a monopoly on wisdom?

9What knowest thou, that we know not? What understandest thou, which is not in us?

9What do you know that we don’t know? What do you understand that is not clear to us?

10With us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men, Much elder than thy father.

10The gray-haired and the aged are on our side, men much older than your father.

11Are the consolations of God too small for thee, Even the word that is gentle toward thee?

11Is God’s comfort not enough for you, or the gentle words spoken to you?

12Why doth thy heart carry thee away? And why do thine eyes flash,

12Why has your heart carried you away, and why do your eyes flash with anger,

13That against God thou turnest thy spirit, And lettest words go out of thy mouth?

13that you turn your spirit against God and let such words pour from your mouth?

14What is man, that he should be clean? And he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

14What is a mere human, that he could be pure? Or anyone born of a woman, that he could be righteous?

15Behold, he putteth no trust in his holy ones; Yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight:

15If God does not even trust his angels, and if the heavens are not pure in his sight,

16How much less one that is abominable and corrupt, A man that drinketh iniquity like water!

16how much less a person who is corrupt and disgusting, who drinks up evil like water!

17I will show thee, hear thou me; And that which I have seen I will declare

17Listen to me and I will explain it to you; I will tell you what I have seen for myself,

18(Which wise men have told From their fathers, and have not hid it;

18what wise men have declared, hiding nothing of what they learned from their ancestors,

19Unto whom alone the land was given, And no stranger passed among them):

19to whom alone the land was given when no foreigners lived among them.

20The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, Even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor.

20A wicked man suffers pain all his life; the tyrant faces trouble all his years.

21A sound of terrors is in his ears; In prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

21Terrifying sounds fill his ears; even when things go well, the destroyer attacks him.

22He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, And he is waited for of the sword.

22He has no hope of escaping the darkness; he is marked for the sword.

23He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.

23He wanders around as food for vultures; he knows that the day of darkness is near.

24Distress and anguish make him afraid; They prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

24Distress and agony terrify him; they overwhelm him like a king prepared for battle.

25Because he hath stretched out his hand against God, And behaveth himself proudly against the Almighty;

25This is because he shook his fist at God and acted defiantly against the Almighty,

26He runneth upon him with astiffneck, With the thick bosses of his bucklers;

26stubbornly charging at him with a thick, strong shield.

27Because he hath covered his face with his fatness, And gathered fat upon his loins;

27Even though his face is covered with fat and his hips are bulging with flesh,

28And he hath dwelt in desolate cities, In houses which no man inhabited, Which were ready to become heaps;

28he will live in ruined cities and in houses where no one stays, places crumbling into heaps.

29He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, Neither shall their possessions be extended on the earth.

29He will no longer be rich, and his wealth will not last; his possessions will not spread across the land.

30He shall not depart out of darkness; The flame shall dry up his branches, And by the breath ofGod’smouth shall he go away.

30He will not escape the darkness; a flame will wither his shoots, and God’s breath will carry him away.

31Let him not trust in vanity, deceiving himself; For vanity shall be his recompense.

31Let him not deceive himself by trusting in worthless things, for he will get nothing but worthlessness in return.

32It shall be accomplished before his time, And his branch shall not be green.

32It will happen to him long before his time, and his branches will never be green.

33He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, And shall cast off his flower as the olive-tree.

33He will be like a vine that drops its grapes before they are ripe, like an olive tree that sheds its blossoms.

34For the company of the godless shall be barren, And fire shall consume the tents of bribery.

34For the company of the godless will produce nothing, and fire will burn up the tents of those who take bribes.

35They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, And their heart prepareth deceit.

35They conceive trouble and give birth to evil; their hearts are focused on deceit.
