1The word that Jehovah spake concerning Babylon, concerning the land of the Chaldeans, by Jeremiah the prophet.
1This is the message the LORD spoke through Jeremiah the prophet about Babylon and the land of the Babylonians.
2Declare ye among the nations and publish, and set up a standard; publish, and conceal not: say, Babylon is taken, Bel is put to shame, Merodach is dismayed; her images are put to shame, her idols are dismayed.
2Announce this among the nations and lift up a signal flag. Spread the news and don’t hide it. Say, 'Babylon is captured! The god Bel is put to shame, and the god Merodach is filled with terror. Her statues are disgraced, and her idols are shattered.'
3For out of the north there cometh up a nation against her, which shall make her land desolate, and none shall dwell therein: they are fled, they are gone, both man and beast.
3For a nation from the north is attacking her. It will turn her land into a wasteland where no one can live. Both people and animals will flee and disappear.
4In those days, and in that time, saith Jehovah, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together; they shall go on their way weeping, and shall seek Jehovah their God.
4In those days and at that time, says the LORD, the people of Israel and the people of Judah will come together. They will walk along weeping as they go, searching for the LORD their God.
5They shall inquire concerning Zion with their faces thitherward, saying, Come ye, and join yourselves to Jehovah in an everlasting covenant that shall not be forgotten.
5They will ask the way to Zion and turn their faces toward it. They will say, 'Come, let us join ourselves to the LORD in a permanent covenant that will never be forgotten.'
6My people have been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray; they have turned them away on the mountains; they have gone from mountain to hill; they have forgotten their resting-place.
6My people have been like lost sheep. Their leaders led them astray and let them wander on the mountains. They went from one mountain to another hill and forgot where their resting place was.
7All that found them have devoured them; and their adversaries said, We are not guilty, because they have sinned against Jehovah, the habitation of righteousness, even Jehovah, the hope of their fathers.
7Everyone who found them devoured them. Their enemies said, 'We are doing nothing wrong, because they have sinned against the LORD, their true place of safety, the LORD who was the hope of their ancestors.'
8Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and go forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as the he-goats before the flocks.
8Run away from Babylon! Leave the land of the Babylonians! Be like the lead goats that go before the flock.
9For, lo, I will stir up and cause to come up against Babylon a company of great nations from the north country; and they shall set themselves in array against her; from thence she shall be taken: their arrows shall be as of an expert mighty man; none shall return in vain.
9For I am stirring up and bringing against Babylon a group of great nations from the north. They will line up for battle against her, and she will be captured from there. Their arrows are like those of a skilled warrior who never returns empty-handed.
10And Chaldea shall be a prey: all that prey upon her shall be satisfied, saith Jehovah.
10Babylonia will be looted. All who plunder her will take everything they want, says the LORD.
11Because ye are glad, because ye rejoice, O ye that plunder my heritage, because ye are wanton as a heifer that treadeth out the grain, and neigh as strong horses;
11You rejoice and are glad now, you who took my inheritance away. You frolic like a calf in the grass and neigh like powerful horses.
12your mother shall be utterly put to shame; she that bare you shall be confounded: behold, she shall be the hindermost of the nations, a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert.
12But your mother city will be deeply ashamed; she who gave birth to you will be disgraced. She will become the least of all nations—a wilderness, a parched land, and a desert.
13Because of the wrath of Jehovah she shall not be inhabited, but she shall be wholly desolate: every one that goeth by Babylon shall be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues.
13Because of the LORD’s anger, no one will live there; she will be completely deserted. Everyone who passes by Babylon will be shocked and will hiss because of all her disasters.
14Set yourselves in array against Babylon round about, all ye that bend the bow; shoot at her, spare no arrows: for she hath sinned against Jehovah.
14Line up for battle all around Babylon, all you who carry bows. Shoot at her and don't save any arrows, because she has sinned against the LORD.
15Shout against her round about: she hath submitted herself; her bulwarks are fallen, her walls are thrown down; for it is the vengeance of Jehovah: take vengeance upon her; as she hath done, do unto her.
15Shout a war cry against her from every side! She has surrendered; her towers have fallen and her walls are torn down. This is the LORD’s vengeance. Take your revenge on her; do to her exactly what she has done to others.
16Cut off the sower from Babylon, and him that handleth the sickle in the time of harvest: for fear of the oppressing sword they shall turn every one to his people, and they shall flee every one to his own land.
16Kill off those who plant crops in Babylon and those who use the sickle at harvest time. To escape the enemy’s sword, everyone will run back to their own people; everyone will flee to their own land.
17Israel is a hunted sheep; the lions have driven him away: first, the king of Assyria devoured him; and now at last Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath broken his bones.
17Israel is like a scattered flock of sheep chased away by lions. First the king of Assyria ate them up, and now finally King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon has broken their bones.
18Therefore thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will punish the king of Babylon and his land, as I have punished the king of Assyria.
18Therefore, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: 'I will punish the king of Babylon and his land just as I punished the king of Assyria.'
19And I will bring Israel again to his pasture, and he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul shall be satisfied upon the hills of Ephraim and in Gilead.
19I will bring Israel back to his own pasture. He will graze on the hills of Carmel and Bashan, and he will eat his fill on the hills of Ephraim and Gilead.
20In those days, and in that time, saith Jehovah, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: for I will pardon them whom I leave as a remnant.
20In those days and at that time, says the LORD, people will look for Israel’s guilt, but there will be none. They will look for Judah’s sins, but none will be found, because I will forgive the few people I have left alive.
21Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod: slay and utterly destroy after them, saith Jehovah, and do according to all that I have commanded thee.
21Attack the land of Merathaim and the people living in Pekod. Kill them and completely destroy them, says the LORD. Do everything I have commanded you.
22A sound of battle is in the land, and of great destruction.
22The sound of battle is heard in the land—the sound of great destruction!
23How is the hammer of the whole earth cut asunder and broken! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations!
23Babylon, the hammer that crushed the whole earth, is now broken and shattered! Babylon has become a source of horror among the nations!
24I have laid a snare for thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon, and thou wast not aware: thou art found, and also caught, because thou hast striven against Jehovah.
24I set a trap for you, Babylon, and you were caught before you even knew it. You were found and captured because you fought against the LORD.
25Jehovah hath opened his armory, and hath brought forth the weapons of his indignation; for the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, hath a work to do in the land of the Chaldeans.
25The LORD has opened his armory and brought out the weapons of his anger. For the Lord, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, has work to do in the land of the Babylonians.
26Come against her from the utmost border; open her store-houses; cast her up as heaps, and destroy her utterly; let nothing of her be left.
26Come against her from far-off places. Break open her granaries. Pile her up like heaps of grain and destroy her completely. Leave nothing left of her.
27Slay all her bullocks; let them go down to the slaughter: woe unto them! for their day is come, the time of their visitation.
27Kill all her young men; let them be led away to the slaughter. It will be terrible for them! Their time has come, the day of their punishment.
28The voice of them that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of Jehovah our God, the vengeance of his temple.
28Listen to the people who have escaped and fled from Babylon. They are coming to Zion to tell how the LORD our God has taken revenge—revenge for what was done to his Temple.
29Call together the archers against Babylon, all them that bend the bow; encamp against her round about; let none thereof escape: recompense her according to her work; according to all that she hath done, do unto her; for she hath been proud against Jehovah, against the Holy One of Israel.
29Call the archers together against Babylon, everyone who can use a bow. Surround the city so no one escapes. Pay her back for what she did; do to her exactly as she has done. For she has been arrogant toward the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.
30Therefore shall her young men fall in her streets, and all her men of war shall be brought to silence in that day, saith Jehovah.
30Therefore, her young men will fall dead in her streets. All her soldiers will be silenced on that day, says the LORD.
31Behold, I am against thee, O thou proud one, saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts; for thy day is come, the time that I will visit thee.
31Look, I am against you, you arrogant city, says the Lord, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies. Your day has come, the time for me to punish you.
32And the proud one shall stumble and fall, and none shall raise him up; and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all that are round about him.
32The arrogant one will stumble and fall, and no one will help him up. I will set his cities on fire, and it will burn up everything around him.
33Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: The children of Israel and the children of Judah are oppressed together; and all that took them captive hold them fast; they refuse to let them go.
33The LORD of Heaven’s Armies says: 'The people of Israel and Judah are both being oppressed. Their captors hold them tight and refuse to let them go.'
34Their Redeemer is strong; Jehovah of hosts is his name: he will thoroughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the earth, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.
34But their Redeemer is strong. His name is the LORD of Heaven’s Armies. He will certainly take up their case so he can give rest to the earth but bring trouble to the people of Babylon.
35A sword is upon the Chaldeans, saith Jehovah, and upon the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her princes, and upon her wise men.
35A sword will strike the Babylonians, says the LORD. It will strike those who live in Babylon, her officials, and her wise men.
36A sword is upon the boasters, and they shall become fools; a sword is upon her mighty men, and they shall be dismayed.
36A sword will strike her false prophets, and they will become fools. A sword will strike her warriors, and they will be filled with terror.
37A sword is upon their horses, and upon their chariots, and upon all the mingled people that are in the midst of her; and they shall become as women: a sword is upon her treasures, and they shall be robbed.
37A sword will strike their horses and chariots and all the foreign troops within her; they will become as weak as women. A sword will strike her treasures, and they will be plundered.
38A drought is upon her waters, and they shall be dried up; for it is a land of graven images, and they are mad over idols.
38A drought will strike her waters, and they will dry up. For it is a land of idols, and the people go crazy over their terrifying statues.
39Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wolves shall dwell there, and the ostriches shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited for ever; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation.
39Because of this, desert creatures and hyenas will live there, and ostriches will make it their home. No one will ever live there again; it will be empty for all generations to come.
40As when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbor cities thereof, saith Jehovah, so shall no man dwell there, neither shall any son of man sojourn therein.
40Just as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring towns, says the LORD, no one will live there anymore. No human being will stay there.
41Behold, a people cometh from the north; and a great nation and many kings shall be stirred up from the uttermost parts of the earth.
41Look! An army is coming from the north. A great nation and many kings are being stirred up from the ends of the earth.
42They lay hold on bow and spear; they are cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roareth like the sea; and they ride upon horses, every one set in array, as a man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Babylon.
42They carry bows and spears. They are cruel and have no mercy. Their voices roar like the ocean. They ride on horses and come in battle formation to attack you, daughter of Babylon.
43The king of Babylon hath heard the tidings of them, and his hands wax feeble: anguish hath taken hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in travail.
43The king of Babylon has heard reports about them, and his hands hang limp with fear. Anguish has gripped him, pain like that of a woman giving birth.
44Behold, the enemy shall come up like a lion from the pride of the Jordan against the strong habitation: for I will suddenly make them run away from it; and whoso is chosen, him will I appoint over it: for who is like me? and who will appoint me a time? and who is the shepherd that can stand before me?
44Like a lion coming up from the thickets of the Jordan River to a rich pasture, I will suddenly chase Babylon from her land. I will appoint whoever I choose over her. For who is like me? Who can challenge me? What leader can stand against me?
45Therefore hear ye the counsel of Jehovah, that he hath taken against Babylon; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely they shall drag them away, even the little ones of the flock; surely he shall make their habitation desolate over them.
45So listen to the plan the LORD has made against Babylon and what he intends to do to the land of the Babylonians. Even the little ones of the flock will be dragged away; he will completely destroy their home because of them.
